Chapter 11

Two Days Later Mischen groaned as she stared at her laptop. She has been trying to finish one of her courses for this year early. She wanted to extend her summer vacation as I was going to take her to Universal Studios. I don't know why but her vampire side is coming out. It has been very slow but I worry that any day now it'll happen. I want to give her a few days as a normal child before she changes. I want her to enjoy the last days where the sun won't irritate her eyes. I want her to enjoy the days before she'll be kept on a tighter leash due to her hunger. "What's wrong now?" She had been yanking on her braid so much that most of her hair had fallen out of it. She turned to look at me, her eyes a reddish orange. I held back my laughter at her frustration. "I failed the f*****g maths quiz." I shrugged. It wouldn't be the first time for her to fail a math quiz. She usually just retakes them and passes the second or third time. I don't see what the big deal is. "And. . ." She glared at me. If looks could kill. . . I'd probably just pass out. Vampires are easy to kill if you know how. All supernatural creatures are. For a vampire it's easiest to snap their neck but you could also rip out their heart. The heart thing works for any creature except witches. You'd have to crush their hearts since the majority of witches already have their hearts taken out and kept somewhere for safekeeping. If you happen to ever come across a witch who isn't very experienced though, you could kill then like a human. "And if I passed it then I could have avoided that subject for the rest of this year's courses. Now I can't retake it until tomorrow! Stupid system," she mumbled. "Only letting me take it once every 24 hours." "Maybe you should take a break from it." She stared at me as if I were crazy. "No! The sooner I finish this then the sooner we can go on vacation and if we go while snot nosed children and high school people are still in school then we won't have to encounter as many as we would when the majority of schools are out." That made sense. . . I guess. "Don't stress yourself. You can still get sick and if you're sick we won't be going anywhere." She sighed as she rolled her eyes. I walked around the couch, so I was in front of her, and took her laptop off of her lap. "Hey!" She yelled in shock, "Give that back!" "Nope!" She glared at me. "Not until you calm down. You're awfully needy when you are sick and quite frankly, I don't feel like dealing with that right now." She jumped up and launched herself at me, attempting to grab her laptop. I held it above my own head, knowing she wouldn't be able to reach. "Salvus I freaking hate you! Give it back to me right now!" I shook my head and laughed at her. She stopped and glared at me, launching herself at me, basically panting. I frowned. She started to cough, covering her mouth with her hand. "Mischen?” I looked at her, eyebrows scrunched together in confusion. “Are you okay," I whisper, concern flowing throughout me. I put her laptop down and she quickly grabs it, her coughing having stopped. "Ha!" I glared at her as she runs to her room. That little- I shake it off and go to make dinner. Every now and then I can here Mischen groaning or cursing at something on her computer. I wouldn't be surprised if she throws it at the wall in the next ten minutes. I look at the pasta I'm making and turn off the stove when I realize it's ready. I grab two bowls and put some in each. "Mischen! Dinner's ready!" I start to set the table, knowing she'll take a few minutes. By the time I'm done I hadn't even heard her door open. I haven't heard anything from her room either. Not even her mumbling over how stupid school is. "Mischen?" I walk to her room, knocking on the door. "Mischen?" I twist the knob, pushing open the door slowly. "Mischen?" I open the door fully and see something that make me want to throw up. Mischen was on the floor, blood coming out of her mouth and nose. I quickly run to her, picking her up in my arms. I quickly check her pulse to find her heart beating rapidly. Her heartbeat usually beats slower than a human's would. . . "Sal-" She starts to cough, blood splattering onto my shirt. I take the first piece of clothing I can get a hold of and wipe the blood off of her face. "It hurts," she whispers. "What does?" She slowly brings her hand up, placing it on her heart. I pull her up, hoping I can help her. I put my hand on the back of her head, gently pushing her towards my neck. If this was her vampire side then she would have an automatic instinct to take my blood when offered, especially if she's injured. I feel her fangs brush my neck but I can tell Mischen is fighting it. She's never been aware that she has to do this. The last and only time she had to directly drink my blood she had blacked it out and she thinks the pills she takes are for her anger. In a way they are. Hey fangs sink into my neck sloppily, making me wince. I feel my blood rush out of my body, my body having an automatic instinct to try and protect my beloved. To give her the blood she needs and wants. She tries to push herself away and I feel her tears land on my shirt. I still hold her to me, knowing that her fangs will retract when she is done. I use my other hand to rub her back, trying to calm her. When her fangs retract she pushes herself away from me. Tears are streaming down her face, her eyes wide and terrified, and her breathing is harsh. Her eyes slowly turn gold making me sigh in worry. There's blood covering her mouth and chin but she is too frozen in fear to wipe it away. "Wh-what just h-happened?" I moved closer to her but she flinched. "It's okay Misha. You're okay. That's all that matters." I slowly moved closer to her. She took a deep breath and her tears stopped but her eyes didn't change back. I held her in my arms. "Why did that happen?" "I don't know. I'll do some research tonight but as long as you're okay that is all that matters." I kissed the top of her head. She's too strong for something like this to have any real effect on her. She'll be okay, I tell myself. "Did I-" There was a pause as she took a deep breath. "Did I hurt you?" She brushes her hand over the spot on my neck that was slowly healing. "No. You could never hurt me Misha." She nods and clings to me, still scared and confused.
