Chapter 2

1982 Words
A Year Later (Mischen is 7) I walk into Mischen's room, knowing that she is still asleep. She always sleeps in late on the weekends. I think it's because she doesn't get enough sleep during the school weeks. She started school a couple months ago and it's killing me. I hate the fact that if I want to see her I can’t come whenever I want because she will be busy with school. I don’t really feel like hanging around the pack house when she isn’t here either. Thankfully though, she has not been acting up as much as she used to since school started. It shouldn’t be much of a problem soon though. I just stand there for a minute, admiring my beloved. She lays on her stomach, one hand at her side while the other lays by her face. Her dirty blonde hair is in a loose braid the falls down to the middle of her back. Her cheeks are a rosy color. I love it when her cheeks are that shade but they are only that color when she is mad, embarrassed, or sleeping. Her blanket is covering all the way up to her shoulders, her braid laying on top of it. I walk over to her bed and kneel beside, rubbing her back. She mumbles something and scoots closer to me. I smile and pick her up, letting the blanket stayed wrapped around her. She tried to move closer to me as I got up and walked out of her room. I walked down the long staircase until I got to the bottom floor. I walked to the entertainment room and set her down on the plush brown couch , putting a pillow under her head. I walked away, ignoring her mumble of protest. I walked to the kitchen and made Mischen a hot chocolate and put it in a plastic travel mug that has little butterflies on them. Then I grabbed a larger travel mug, that was a plain grey color, and made coffee. I grabbed a bag of blood and set it on the counter. I grabbed the now finished coffee and poured it in the travel mug a bit more than three fourths of the way. I ripped open the bag of blood and poured it in the travel mug until it was full. I screwed the cap on and grabbed Mischen's mug. I walked back to the entertainment room to see Alpha Weiss and his mate. His mate was smaller than me, she went to my shoulders. Her hair was a fair blond and her eyes a shade of blue which matched the ocean. Everyone in the pack saw her as the definition of beautiful, but I didn't. To me, Mischen would always be the definition of beautiful. "Just promise me one thing Salvus," Alpha Weiss said. "That you will keep my niece safe." I nodded. "Please Salvus, swear on your life," Luna Joli said with tears in her eyes. "She is the daughter we can never have. Salvus- swear to us that you will bring her back when all of this is over, and she will be unharmed." "I swear on my life. I would never let her get hurt." I looked to my little beloved who is asleep on the couch. I know that she will be mad when she realizes that she can't come back for a few months, but I will take on all her anger and hate in this world just for her to be safe. I will never let anyone harm her, I think as I recall the memory of the conversation I had with Alpha Weiss yesterday. *~*~*~* "Salvus, I need to talk to you. In private," Alpha Weiss says, looking at Mischen who was walking with me around the pack. I sigh in frustration but nod in agreement, nonetheless. I bend down to Mischen's height and whisper in her ear that I'll see her later. I kiss her forehead and she runs off. "What can I help you with Alpha Weiss?" He looks around and gestures for me to follow him. We walk back to the pack house and all the ways up to his office. He closes the door, locking it behind us. I sit down on the couch that's in the corner of his office and he walks behind his desk. He sighs, "I know." I raised an eyebrow, just wanting to get back to my little Misha. "And what is it exactly that you know?" His jaw clenched and he griped the ends of his desk, almost breaking it. "That my niece, my seven year old niece, is your beloved." His voice sounded angry and frustrated, only making my eyes widen more. "How did you find out," I whispered, fear in my voice. Fear that he will take me away from my precious Mischen. "The other day, when you had been out hunting, you hurt your head. You came back and had to get an ice pack- you hadn't healed yet. I got a call just a bit before you came back from Mischen's school. They said she was complaining about a pain on the side of her head. I told them to call me if it got worse. By the time that you had healed, the school called me saying that she was all better. It’s rare but werewolves can sometimes feel the pain of their mates. It’s even more rare if they are young, like Mischen, but it is still possible. "Then other thoughts came to mind. . . Mischen likes to hang around you so much. You glare at anyone who may look at her the wrong way. Mischen hates her guards. Sometimes she will even sneak into your room when she can't get to sleep. "It all came together. You are her mate and she is your beloved." I kept silent, not really sure how to respond. "It's true, isn't it?" "Yes, it is. But," I said with a slightly angry tone, "If you try to take me away from her it won't work." "I'm not going to take you away from her." I sighed in relief. "Actually, I'm going to do the opposite." "What do you mean?" I looked out the window that was in his office, looking for Mischen. I saw her with a group of kids, laughing and playing. I smiled. I love seeing her happy, the only way it could be better was if I was the one making her happy. "It's time you learn the truth. You might want to take a seat." I looked up from the window and sighed. I gave one last look at Mischen and walked over to the seat that was in front of his desk. On his desk there was three picture frames. One was a picture of him and his mate, Luna Joli. The other was of Luna Joli and Mischen. Mischen's cheeks had chocolate smeared on them and she had a half eaten chocolate bar in one hand. The third picture surprised me. It was a picture of Mischen and I. I had been asleep on the couch, Mischen in my arms. Her arms were wrapped around my shoulders as far as she could reach. Her head was resting on my chest and she was peacefully dreaming. "Her parents died. In a rogue attack. The rogues followed the scent of vampires according to the one I tortured.” Vampire? “Her parents they. . . They weren't the same species. Her dad was my brother but her mother was not a werewolf." My eyebrows scrunched together in confusion. Mischen was a hybrid? Wait a minute- "Her mother was a vampire. . . Like you." "What? But the only sent on her is werewolf." He nodded. "The last hybrid that was like Mischen was born a werewolf. At the age of fourteen, the year after shifting, his vampire side came out. He was still part werewolf, still able to shift into his wolf. He couldn't control his vampire side. He went on a killing spree. He killed almost an entire town. He was caught and sentenced to death by a mixture of wolfsbane and solis.” What hurts werewolves and what hurts vampires. That poor kid. . . “Basically torture." I had to agree with him on that. "Why does Mischen matter enough to say that entire story?" I was hoping it wasn't what I was thinking. "When this happened, the werewolf council banned vampire and werewolf hybrids. Since anytime they were conceived they were born werewolves, the vampire council didn’t have a say in the matter. They are supposed to be killed as soon as they are born." I stiffened. "We couldn't do that to Mischen. So we kept it a secret. Not very many people knew about Mischen being a hybrid. We told those in the pack that her werewolf gene was dominant and that she doesn’t have a trace of vampire in them. They had never met a hybrid so they automatically believed us. "About a month ago, when you were gone, a member of the council came over. They were talking to every Alpha around here about rogues. He was a scary kind of guy. He gave off a creepy vibe. He saw Mischen and did something to freak her out. He could have just stood there and still scared her. Her eyes flashed gold. It was the first time something like this happened with her. He knew she wasn’t just a werewolf from that and he became outraged. He questioned about her and threatened to kill our entire pack if we didn't dispose of her." I stood up, angry. Really angry. I was sure that my eyes were black. I ran my hands through my hair in frustration, walking towards the window. I quickly spotted Mischen, a smile on her face. How could someone want to kill such an innocent child? "I can't let them kill all these innocent people Salvus." "And I won't let you or the f*****g council kill Mischen." I wanted to kill someone. I wanted to rip that council man's head off. First for scaring Mischen and then for saying that she has to die. "That's why you two have to run. I hate that I have to do this but I refuse to let my niece, who hasn't done a single thing wrong, die. You two have to run away from here. When she comes to the time when her vampire side comes out, train her. Keep her out of trouble. Then, maybe, she can be safe from the council." If it could keep my little Mischa safe, then I would do anything. *~*~*~* I grabbed the bags I had packed for Mischen and took them out to my car. I placed them in my trunk and went back inside. I went upstairs and grabbed a few pillows and Mischen's favorite stuffed animals. I took those out to my car and put them in the back seat. After that I went in and got Mischen. Alpha Weiss and Luna Joli had tears in their eyes. Alpha Weiss came over to me and kissed Mischen's cheek and Luna Joli did the same thing. Tears started falling down her cheeks and Alpha Weiss pulled her into a hug as I walked out of the pack house. I set Mischen down in the back seat and buckled her in and made her comfortable. I placed a stuffed animal in her arms and she sighed. I closed the door and got in the driver's seat. I glanced back at the pack house for a minute. I drove off knowing that it will be a long time before we could come back here.
