Chapter 1

Two Years Later (Mischen is 6) "Salvus!" I look up from where I was closing the door of my car to see Mischen running up to me. I smiled for the first time since I left a few months ago. I knew she would need space to grow on her own so as much as it kills me, I leave for months at a time. Give her some space from me and let her become her own person. Make her own friends. I opened my arms wide just in time for her to launch herself at me. I let my arms wrap around her and breathed in her scent. Pumpkin spice and vanilla. It was a heavenly mixture and always reminded me of her. Reminded me of home, because she was my home. "My little Misha, how have you been?" She snuggled her head into my neck and murmured, "Cold." I laughed. It's winter and it has been snowing pretty hard where her pack is located. I pull her back a bit so I can take in her appearance. She is wearing pajama pants with a bunch of candy canes on them and a big sweater that kind of covers her completely. The inside of her jacket is covered in fake fur, helping her keep warm. She smiled at me and then wrapped her arms around me again- snuggling into my chest. I ran my hand up and down her back, trying to get her as warm as possible. Even though my skin is considered cold to other people it’s warm to her. It was a beloved thing for vampires. She never questioned it, she didn't even know I was a vampire. She doesn't need to know. Not yet at least. She jumped away from my hold and I found myself wishing she didn't. Wishing that she would let me hold her just for a bit longer. This wasn't even the longest I have been away from her and I already missed her like crazy. "How are you so warm?" Her face scrunched up into an adorable expression of confusion, nose crinkling. "Are you sick?" Then her eyes widened. "Salvus, you aren't sick are you? Please don't be sick!" Tears started to fill her green eyes and I pulled her to me, chuckling. "I'm not sick my little Misha. Calm down." She nodded, snuggling into me. I got up and walked to the pack house. The pack house consisted of five different levels. The bottom floor was the kitchen, living room, pack doctor, and the electronics room. The second floor were made for any guests or pack members in need of a place to stay. The third floor is a long hallway with three rooms. The first one leads to a library (with an entire children's section with books that Mischen has written her name on the front pages), the second door leads to a conference room for any small meetings, and the third ones leads to the Alpha's office. The fourth level is shared between the Beta's and Third in command's families. The fifth and final floor is for the Alpha's family (including Mischen of course). I am the only guest that doesn't stay on the second floor. While they do not know that Mischen is my beloved, they know that Mischen is very attached to me. They consider me her best friend in a sort of way and since I helped in the rogue attack I have been considered Mischen's personal protector. Of course, when I'm gone then she has two or three guards around her. I walk into the kitchen set Mischen on the counter. I get out all of the ingredients for hot chocolate. Her skin is way too cold for a werewolf, even if she was just out in the snow. I look back at her as I make her hot chocolate. She is sitting on the counter, peacefully swinging her legs back and forth as her slightly damp dirty blonde hair sticks to her cheeks. I put her hot chocolate in a plastic mug with miniature marshmallows in it, just how she likes it. I hand the mug over to her, kissing her forehead as I do. After that I head over to the fridge and grab a bag of blood that is kept in the bottom drawer. When Mischen wasn't paying attention I grabbed a cup, ripped open the bag of the crimson liquid, and poured it into the cup. I have a feeling that she would be grossed out and confused if she saw me drink it. I took a gulp of the liquid but it wasn't satisfying. It wasn't fresh and it disgusted me but no way was I going to go hunting for fresh prey when I could be spending time with Mischen. I finish the glass just as the door to the kitchen opens to reveal Alpha Weiss. He looked tired and stressed out. There were dark bags under his green eyes, his shaggy blond hair was more unruly than usual, and his shoulders were sagged as if he was going to fall asleep any minute. When he looked at me he sighed a little, but in a relieved sort of way. "Salvus," he said in an almost monotone voice. "I'm glad you're back. I already have my hands full and Mischen has been being a handful lately." He looked over to her with stern eyes. My eyes moved to Mischen who had finished her hot chocolate and was trying to put an innocent look on her face. I narrowed my gaze on her and said in a slightly threatening tone, "Mischen. . . What have you been doing that is making your uncle so stressed out?" She looked down and fiddled with her fingers. I sighed and turned to Alpha Weiss. "What has she been doing?" "Well the other day, she bit one of her guards. And last week she ran away from all the guards and hid in your room. She has been doing all sorts of things like that lately." I sighed and picked up Mischen. She buried her head in my shoulder, wrapping her arms as far around my neck as her arms could reach. "I'll talk to her. I promise." With that I walked out of the kitchen and up the stairs, all the way to the fifth floor. I walked to my room and opened it with the hand that wasn't holding Mischen up. I closed my door behind me and walked over to my bed, laying down and putting Mischen beside me. I felt her curl into my side and I felt her shoulders shake. I laid on my side and pulled her away from me, just a bit. I saw tears cascading down her cheeks. I wiped one away from her little cheek. "What's wrong my little Misha?" Her dirty blonde hair, which had dried completely, had once again begin to sick to her cheeks. Sadly, this time it was from her tears. "Are you angry at me? Please don't be angry at me!" I sighed, sitting up and pulling her into a hug. I spoke in a gentle tone, "Of course I'm not. I just want to know why you have been acting up." She glanced up at me with her big green eyes. "It's because I hate those guards!" "And why is that my little Misha?" "Because they aren't you!" I sighed. This pull between us is why she is acting this way. If she wasn't my beloved then she wouldn't hate her guards so much. She wouldn't care that they aren't me. "I can't always be here Mischen. As much as I want to, I just can't." She hit my chest and screamed, "Why not!" I let her little fists hit my chest, letting her get her anger out. Eventually she stopped hitting my chest and laid her head on my chest. She had tired herself out. She was only six years old, after all. I stroked her hair with one hand and with the other I drew calming circles on her back. I kept doing that until her breathing slowed down and she fell asleep. "Because, my little Misha, I must keep you a secret."
