Chapter Six- Deadline

2262 Words
For five hours, Holly had combed over every single word placed within that contract. But without the option of using online for a way to research the things she didn’t know, she moved to a library to hopefully use their computers to do so. Choosing a computer in the far back corner, she typed in a set of words that were on the contract, having kept the contract at home and used a to-do list sheet of paper to not draw more suspicion her way. However, as she tried to search these items, she found how they had been blocked. c*****g her jaw to the side, she let out a sigh before then deciding to look up Parker himself. She found that he had a Wikipedia page, several hundreds of online news clippings, videos of him having opened up businesses and charities, and even fan accounts on f*******: that showed “sightings” of him with pictures as if he was a true celebrity. But she noticed how he didn’t smile in any of those photos. He simply remained deadpanned. She wondered if this was because of some deep traumatic reason or for the fact that he felt smiling was pointless. But nevertheless, she still found herself drawn into him-even just pictures of him. She could still feel his kiss set hard on her lips and relived the moment as her fingers drifted to her mouth. A blush fell over her cheeks as she had then returned to her internet stalking of him. She noticed how he had been photographed with other women at restaurants. The pictures were tinted a bit dark as they were taken from outside, but the photos contained him and another woman without a doubt. As she scrolled further through the page, she found a photograph of her. She recognized it due to the fact her ugly uniform had been looking back at her. The caption on the photo read; Mystery girl number 50. Comments below this had been of girls being jealous saying she wasn’t pretty, asking if anyone knew if she was his girlfriend, and other questions that fell into this category. She felt as though her personal life had been a bit invaded as she also noticed how there had been comments regarding her specifically. They spoke of her not having a f*******: and being a charity case as she worked at the local grocery store and he was only doing so as she would never be able to get his attention otherwise. The thoughts dug deep as she believed that they had held some form of truth. She quickly got out of the account before allowing herself to swell up with tears as she had returned to the apartment before seeing a flashing light blinking on her answering machine. With this having been the only phone she had access to, she had been used to filtering her calls to ones for her father or ones that spoke of his medical status. Whenever the phone rang, however, it would give her a sort of heart attack as she had expected any of those calls to be the one she was dreading. However, as she pressed play on the machine, she found it to be Parker’s assistant, who had left a message when she couldn’t reach her. “Hello Miss Blaire, this is Parker Hammond’s personal assistant. I have been asked to call you and inform you that Mister Hammond would like to speak to you urgently. Whenever works for you works for him, just simply give us a call back when we can have a car sent to get you. I believe you have this number. Goodbye.” She smirked to herself, imagining that it was because he had just been simply unable to wait. With this thought, she pulled his card back to view and used her flip phone, that went on expensive minutes and for emergencies only, although this was now the second time she had used it for his number, before dialing it and finding his assistant to answer. With the same chipper tone as before, Holly received a kind conversation with the woman who was pleased that she called when she did. She spoke of Parker, although addressing him specifically as Mister Hammond, and how he was eager to speak to her. She couldn’t help but gain butterflies from this as she was excited to see him as well. “We will have a car sent to your address if you will simply give me said address.” She paused, fearing that the chauffeur would then see her place of residence and report back to Parker that she lived in a place such as that. “I can actually meet him there, it would be easier for me.” “He is rather insistant in having a car sent for you.” Not wanting to anger him more than she might have already, she agreed and then rummaged through her closet in hopes of finding something decent enough to wear. She found an old church dress when she still had the heart to go and pulled it to view, pulling off the shawl that came with it and found that it actually worked for the occasion. She then hurried and collected herself as far as her hair and makeup, perfume and deodorant, before then waiting in the doorway of her building to watch the car pull up. She was amazed that it had been almost the same moment she leaned upon the wall and saw the woman chauffeur to be holding the door open for her. Holly paused, feeling incredibly guilty for how she treated the kind young woman. She couldn’t allow herself to be thought of in such a harsh light as well as making the girl believe that she was the one to blame. Due to this, she paused before getting into the car as the woman looked to her in complete shock. “I am so sorry about how I acted before, you didn’t deserve that.” The chauffeur smiled brightly at her. “Thank you, Miss Blaire, but your apologies are not needed.” “They are. You were just doing your job and didn’t deserve that.” “Thank you.” She continued her smile while she shut Holly’s door and then moved to the driver’s side. Speaking without words once more as she didn’t want to overstep, the woman focused on the traffic ahead while Holly became interested in learning everything she could in the small window of time she had. “I don’t think I caught your name.” “Usually people don’t ask for it...but it’s...it’s Violet.” She smiled to Holly in her rearview mirror. “That’s very pretty.” “Thank you.” “You know you can call me by my first name.” “I was asked not to. I was also told not to talk to you unless you had a simple question.” “Nobody has to know, I’ll keep it a secret.” Violet continued to smile. “How long have you been working for Parker?” “Five years.” “Wow..you have probably picked up a lot of girls for him then…” She looked to Holly with a look of fear in her eyes. “I’m not sure what you mean….” She spoke carefully as she seemed as though she had just been caught with her hand in the cookie jar. “Just between us girls...is he someone I should keep my distance from?” “Mister Hammond is an incredible man, he is a great boss, and does great things with his company.” “What is your personal opinion?” “That is, Miss Blaire-Holly.” “I have seen so many pictures of him online with other girls?’ She nearly broke her neck as she looked back to Holly with wide eyes. “Where?!” “f*******:. He has these fan pages…” Suddenly she dialed a number and pulled a wireless device up to her ear before speaking into it. She spoke all in code-almost in police code, before finally returning her attention to Holly. “What was that?” “Mister Hammond prides himself on being off the grid.” “Isn’t that bad for business?” “Perhaps I misspoke, he wants to keep his personal life off of it.” “And I’m part of that…” Violet nodded. “Out of how many-” “Please Miss Blaire-” “I promise you that under no circumstances would anybody know of this conversation.” SHe let out a sigh before looking into the mirror. “Honestly, I do not know.” “I understand that you love working for him, I won’t jeopardize that...I just want to know what I’m getting myself into here…” Violet seemed paranoid before finally beginning to speak. “He has had other women.” “If you had to give an approximate number?” “I don’t know if I could…” “Could you try?” “Two hundred.” Holly’s brows shot up. “Are they all charity cases like me?” Once more, Violet seemed nervous to speak. “Your silence will only make me assume…” “He seems to focus upon women with low self esteem. But there are many people now in the industry that have been connected to him and they have done well. But you are my favorite of all of them.” “Thank you...but I’m still a bit confused…” The car ride now ceased with the engine being shut off and Violet turning back to Holly. “Every girl he has had always ends up set in life after this. Some go on to be authors as others go on to television or starting world-changing charities. So to answer your question, no...I can’t tell you much because he does keep mostly to himself. He gives me an address and I pick them up. And as far as if there is anything to “warn” you about, it is just to not fall in love with him.” “Really? Why’s that?” “Because he is afraid of it and I think you can really do some good for him. He needs someone that will keep him on his toes...he gets so bored usually.” This made Holly nervous as she was the last person who would be seen as exciting. If anything, she was the complete opposite. “I said something wrong didn’t I?” Violet asked nervously. “No…” Holly said while thinking. “You actually helped.” “Really?” Holly nodded. “I promise you, I won’t say a word about it to him.” She intended on keep this promise as she smiled towards Violet and removed herself from the car before the chauffeur had a chance to open the door. She made her way up to the front before being chased after by Violet. “I almost forgot…” She set a visitor’s pass placed on a lanyard around her neck as Holly pulled it to view. “You won’t be getting anywhere without that.” She said with a smirk as then pulled open the door for Holly before she made her way inside, finding a member of security to glare at her until seeing her pass. She then ventured to the elevators and made her way to the top floor, as having done so before, until she had made it to the front desk. Only now, since it was after hours, an assistant didn’t linger behind the large gray desk, there had been a simple headset hanging over the edge of the computer instead. Holly continued down the path she memorized as she thought of it almost every second-or so it had felt like. Perhaps this was just because she had imagined it so many times. She calmed her breath before finally pushing her way through the doors, finding them to come open a bit harder than before. Maybe that was because she wasn’t as confident going into this. The entire way up here, she had given herself a pep talk as to what she deserved and what she would expect from him, but all of that evaporated into the back of her mind as she imagined feeling that intense aura he seemed to give off that sent goosebumps to form up and down her body-even if he didn’t even touch her. He had been behind his desk, scribbling his initials on to what looked like a million different documents before finally raising his gaze to look at her. A smirk carved into his otherwise focused lips as he had watched her move towards him with the contract loose in her grasp. His eyes continued to focus on her swaying hips until the contract slammed down in front of him, showing her signature on the line and a cocky smile on her lips.
