CHAPTER 9 – Should I?

2121 Words
Gabriel’s POV My enemy’s wife whimpered in pain and then blacked out in my arms. She struggled at first, but I pinned her to the bed using the weight of my upper body. I didn’t check out the wounds on her lower part because I was not interested so I allowed the nurse to do her duty. She screamed in agony and I kept whispering gentle words into her ear, hoping that it would help distract her from the pain. Finally, she blacked out because of the intolerable pain. As I looked at her unconscious face, I wondered how I was suddenly extremely kind toward someone and that too, a woman. After all, I was the devil and angel of death to whoever backstabbed me, not to mention their worst nightmare. My rational subconscious mind kept me focused on my real mission. Don’t be too sympathetic to the wife of your biggest enemy, Gabriel! She might be tricking you to escape from here. Warm tears flowed from the corner of her eyes and hugged the soft pillow. Her long eyelashes kissed her high cheekbones. Despite being unconscious, she frowned sometimes and even sobbed softly. It was true that I had seen people getting tortured before and I had seen enough women cry. Yet, if my heart had ever softened even for just a fleeting moment in my mafia life, it was in front of her. She was the wife of my biggest rival, though she was not his wife anymore, she was still his widow. Still, my curiosity was killing me. As soon as she woke up, I was determined to try and find out what she did to get tortured like that by Fedrick “Sir, it’s done.” The nurse’s voice woke me up from my daze. I slowly released my hands which were holding her wrists and stood up from the bed. The nurse covered her with the duvet and tucked her in comfortably. “Did you clean the wound and dress them properly?” I asked in a serious tone. “Yes, sir. She will get recover soon. As soon as she wakes up, you need to feed her a glass of milk with sugar. Her body needs sugar and energy. Then, if she doesn’t vomit after that, she can start a light diet. Also, make sure she eats the vitamins prescribed by the doctor. You need to take care of this poor soul, sir.” The nurse flashed me an empathetic look. “If you are done, you can leave. I don’t need anyone to instruct me on what I should do.” I shot her a cold glare that I was sure made a chill run down her spine. She gulped and quickly vacated the room. Looking at the sleeping widow, I let out a long sigh and stretched my neck from side to side. It had been a hectic day and the sound of my stomach suddenly growling reminded me of the time. I checked my wristwatch to see that it was already 8.12 at night. It was no wonder why I was hungry since I hadn’t eaten anything all day. I gazed at the sleeping figure on the bed and realized that she was probably not going to wake up soon. So, I decided to have my dinner in the dining hall. I wanted to have a chat with Alejandro as well since I needed to update him on what was happening in his guest bedroom. He was my boss and he had the right to know. I came out of the bedroom and stopped in front of the guard that was standing outside. “Listen, no one should enter this room without my permission. If anyone wants to do so, ask them to come and meet me first,” I ordered him sternly and he nodded. I walked to Alejandro’s bedroom and the guards confirmed that he had already left for dinner. Glad that I could hit two birds with one stone, I headed to the dining room for my dinner and chat with him. As I was heading there, I met Nick on the way. “Oh, there you are! I thought you were busy fuc**ng a wh*re the whole day.” Nick winked and smirked at me. “Oh, someone seems jealous of my stamina.” I paraded my biceps in front of him and danced my eyebrows at him playfully. Nick smiled, “You know that there’s no one here who can beat you, Gab.” Nick was also an orphan like me. We both didn’t know our birthdays or anything about our families. Ever since Alejandro brought us to his mansion, it was our home and our family. We were united like brothers and were prepared to do anything for our family. According to Alejandro’s estimation, Nick was about two years younger than me. He brought him home exactly one month after I stepped into the mansion. “Why were you looking for me?” I asked as we both started walking towards the dining room. “I wanted to hand these over to you.” Nick held up a black bag that seemed a little heavy. Taking the bag into my hand, I peered inside, “What’s this?” “Those are the mobile phones, tablets, and other electronic devices that we collected from Fedrick’s base before blowing it up. I hope we can find something from them,” Nick explained. “Good job, bro! Handover these to the audio and video consultation room. They are the best people to handle these gems,” I instructed. “Don’t you want to go through them before that?” Nick asked. “Nah, I don’t think so. Just tell them to inform me when they are going through these items. Then, I will join them and watch.” We climbed down the stairs and walked along the corridor to the dining room. To be honest, it was more of a dining hall and not a room. It was huge and the luxurious atmosphere reflected Alejandro’s wealth. As usual, he was sitting on the main chair of the dining room, puffed up with his Italian attitude and penetrating gaze. The maids were terrified of him, so they always made sure that nothing went wrong at the dining table. “Ah, here comes my young masters. You have become so busy and proud after your latest biggest victory!” Alejandro said in a thick Italian accent. “I was busy with some work while this big brother of mine was busy with a woman.” Nick sat on the other side of the table in front of me and chuckled out loud. “Don’t you dare say another word without knowing about my day or else, I will make sure that you will never laugh again, Nick!” I said with a fake threatening tone as I took my seat at the table. “Oops! Forgive me, Sir Gabriel!” He raised his arms in the air in surrender. Alejandro turned his head towards me to start an important discussion, “How is that girl you brought here, Gabriel?” “She claims to be Fedrick’s wife, but I couldn’t get her to spill out any more information because she is too weak to talk. She couldn’t even walk to the bathroom and I had to help her,” I said. “Hmm…I am sure you helped her very much, bro!” Nick teased sarcastically. “Nick, you better stop it. We are in a serious discussion, man!” Alejandro shot him a cold, serious glare. Nick bowed his head down with respect, “Sorry, Boss. I was just making fun of him.” “All I can say is that she was tortured. The doctor and nurse examined her and confirmed that she was brutally tortured. I also got a feeling that she hates him, but I don’t know for sure. I can’t come to a verdict within a few hours,” I explained as I rested a serviette on my lap. “Where is she now? What is she doing?” Alejandro asked and signaled the maids to start serving us dinner. “She is unconscious. The doctor said she needs to eat some vitamins and healthy food to regain her health. She had been starved for days and tortured in a cell. In fact, even her lower parts were burned with a cigar.” My calm tone of voice turned aggressive all of a sudden and I squeezed the spoon in my hand. “Find out more details about her, Gabriel. We don’t know what game she is playing. Always be careful when dealing with women. Their sixth sense is sharper than we think. They can show us one thing and do something totally different,” Alejandro advised before sipping his soup. “I know that, boss. Not to worry, I am totally aware of it. The thing is I can’t put any pressure on her to get the information she has. She keeps blacking out frequently. So, for now, the best thing is to let her recover, and then I will interrogate her.” I applied some butter on a bun and took a bite. “Meanwhile, I think we can check the electronic devices we found at their base. I am sure those devices contain a lot of their secrets,” Nick chimed in. Alejandro’s eyebrows arched with curiosity, “Why was she tortured like that?” “I don’t know, but when I asked her about Fedrick or even mentioned his name, she started to curse and cry. She called him a monster, a devil, and even sometimes referred to him as Lucifer. Based on her behavior, the way she cursed him, and her condition, I came to a conclusion that either this Fedrick was a psycho or this girl who claims to be his wife did something to unleash Fedrick’s wrath,” I replied. “Hmmm….” Both Nick and Alejandro nodded their heads, deep in thought. “What about the security you allocated for her, Gab? If someone from the Shark gang knows that she has been captured and is still alive with us, they might initiate a plan to rescue her,” Alejandro questioned. “Yeah, I am aware of that possibility. So, I arranged tight security at her door and instructed them not to let anyone enter to see her without my permission. Even the maids are allowed to see her only when I am inside the room as well,” I explained. Soon, the dining hall turned silent with only the sound of our cutlery sets fighting with our food filling the hall. After dinner, we had a short chat about our business and future plans before wishing good night to Alejandro and heading to the AV consultation room. “Listen, these are some of the electronic devices which we found at the Sharks’ base. You need to run through them. I will be sitting here so you straight away brief me with the intel you come across,” I instructed as I pulled out a chair and sat next to the guy operating the huge monitor. “Nick, you also sit here with me. We both should know what is in the bag,” I said to Nick just as he turned to leave the room. He nodded and took a seat on the other side of the AV guy. The guy who was operating the monitors pulled out a tablet and connected it to the huge monitor. A security login appeared on the screen, revealing that the tablet was secured with a password. “Can you c***k the password and access the tablet?” I asked while checking through the bag. “If I can’t do it, then no one in this world can, boss!” the guy named Alex said while stretching his arms like a professional. “If you can’t, Alex, then no one in this world can stop me from blowing off your head,” I said with a smirk and Alex pouted his lips. That was the thing with us, we still shared some childish moments even though we were big shots in the mafia world. When I was pulling out stuff from inside the bag, my hand got a hold of a few CDs. I went through them one by one to see that they were named with codes, most probably containing details of some of their operations and plans. Then, I flipped through the final CD and realized that it was named ‘Our wedding!’. Should I watch this or shouldn’t I?
