CHAPTER THREESheila and Wilkins left the next morning just before six o’clock. When she had walked to the stables, she found him already there. With the help of a sleepy stable boy, he had taken the two best horses left, put them into their harnesses and attached them to the open chaise that had been her father’s joy and delight. As they set off briskly down the drive, Sheila was wondering if she would ever see her home again and if she would ever find anywhere so hauntingly beautiful. To the last question she knew that the answer was ‘no’. It would certainly not be anywhere she loved as she had loved her own home and garden ever since she could remember.
