Chapter 7 Julia Crowley sits at her house for three days reading the letter, making sure that she knows John’s story inside and out. She is seated at the kitchen table over a hot bowl of soup when her phone rings. Although Julia has been waiting for this phone call, she hesitates to pick it up. Overcome with nervousness; she can do nothing but stare at the ringing telephone. It rings again, but again Julia doesn’t reach for it. Instead, she reaches for John’s note and gives it a quick read while the phone goes to voicemail. The message machine clicks and Julia’s voice bellows throughout the room. “Hi, you have reached Julia Crowley. I’m sorry that I missed your call, please leave a message after the beep.” Julia goes over the last few sentences, ignoring the sound of her voice.
