19 Melissa had everything she needed from Marius Kowalski soon after she began questioning him. She persisted, however, despite the annoyance the stable-hand displayed at being made to answer questions that were different only in the way they were phrased, because she had read that people who lied were often caught out by the same question being asked in a different way. Only when she was satisfied that Kowalski’s answers were staying the same, and she felt confident he was telling the truth, did she end the informal interview. Kowalski’s relief was palpable as he left the booth and returned to his friends at the pool table, taking what remained of his drink with him. Melissa paid no attention to the abrupt departure, she had better things to worry about than the irritation of a suspect
