Bao sat in Sam’s lap as we discussed Honorable Williams’s offer over a large bottle of Wild Turkey, an extravagance for us, as bourbon was difficult to get in Liberia. There was more at stake here than just the money. Sam and I had been trying to start a family for some time and neither one of us were getting any younger. We had married shortly after returning home from Liberia in 1968, but we had taken our time luxuriating in our new appreciation of the American way of life. We had no bribes to pay, no mosquito netting to worry about, and it was good being back in a society where we understood the subtleties of how things worked.
