Chapter 11

1290 Words
Ava's POV I immediately looked sideways and my eyes fell on an haggard looking man. “Who are you?” I questioned him, my defense suddenly kicking in. He didn't respond to my question, instead he took time munching on the stale bread the guard had just brought for us. His hair was rough and his beard seem to be reaching the ground from where he sat. He gulped down the bottle of water and my eyes fell on his hands, a sudden gasp escaped my lips. I could almost see the bone from his tiny hands as he held the bottle of water to his mouth. I've never seen anyone so thin. No, thing isn't the right word. He freaking look like a skeleton! “You should eat your food, you don't know when you'd be getting another.” He pointed at the stale bread, not bothering to look at me. I stared at the spoilt garbage he called food and I suddenly feel nauseated. “This is far worse than how they treat animals.” I clenched my teeth, grabbing the bread and the bottle of water. The pangs of hunger had hit me harder, and as this strange man says, I might not be getting any food anytime soon. I took a bite but instead of swallowing the bread, I immediately spit it out. “What? Don't you like the food?” I heard the man say and I scoffed within me. Did he just call this food? Even a dog would have barked at the sight of this. I looked sideways and his long sunken face was observing me. I cleared my throat shifting my gaze back to the crap he called food. “Even an animal would have whine at this nonsense here. Next time, don't call this crap here a meal.” I warned and he bursted into a short laugh. What was funny in my words? I rolled my eyes. “Little birdie, I see you still haven't wake up to reality yet. In this hell, even the air you breath is a privilege.” Little birdie? Are we here to give fancy names now? I rolled my eyes. The latter part of his statement sink properly into my head. ‘Even the air you breath is a privilege’, I snorted within me, wondering who drummed that rubbish into his head. “Believe what you want but I don't “If you don't want it, then I'd have it.” He made to take the bread in my front but I quickly snatched it away from his reach. I held it to myself. Who knows when they'd be serving another if I let this go? A chuckle escaped his lips and I tilted my head towards his direction. “I can hear your stomach singing from here, you should eat something. It's not that bad.” He said while leaning back on the wall. I took another bite from the bread and this time, it tastes better. Although, it still feels a little tacky on my tongue. After chewing the whole bread and gulping down some water, I turned to face the man by my side. It occurred to me I still hadn't know his name. His eyes were closed and his hands was folded on his chest. Was he sleeping? How could he fall asleep in just a short moment? And what kind of weird sleeping style is this? I stretched my hand to tap him awake but I refrained. A lot of questions were ringing in my head that I needed answers to. “You have something to say to me?” He asked and I turned back my head to face him. His eyes was still closed and he hadn't moved from his earlier position. “Uhh… what's your name?” I stuttered, not sure maybe that was the right way to begin. He didn't respond, neither did he open his eyes. Someone from another angle might even think he was already asleep. I turned away from him, thinking he might not want to reveal his identity to me. Maybe that question was a little too personal. “I'm known as Axel. You can call me that also.” He finally responded, although his eyes still remained close. There was something about him I couldn't quite place. Was it the way he speak so carefree and at the same time blunt? Or was it the aura I keep sensing about him being a powerful wolf? A lot of questions was ringing in my head so I turned to face him once more, this time his eyes were opened and was staring directly at me. I cleared my throat and ask my next question. “Why are you inside this place? How long have you been here? And have you ever tried-” He waved his hand and that interrupted me from completing the last question. “Is this some kind of question and answers session?” He laughed, then shrugged. “Common, one question at a time my lady.” I nodded my head in understanding, my eyes focused on him as I waited for his response to my questions. “I'm here because I choose to take what was mine.” He responded, leaving me more confused. “And to your question about how long I've been here,” he paused, placing his hand on his head as if trying to remember something. “It maybe three months, six or even a year. I lost count already.” I only got more confused by the answers he just provided. It seems he didn't want to go into all the details and I respected that. So I let that go and instead ask, “Have you ever tried escaping?” A dark chuckle escaped his lips and his face suddenly get serious. “I didn't try, I actually did escape.” What? If he escaped how come he's still in here? I didn't have to wonder for long because he continued. “But I went back for him, escaping without taking back what is mine is all foolishness,” He sneered, clenching his fists. “Not when he still have his head on his shoulders.” “Is that worth it?” I asked and he looked at me as of I just ask the most stupid thing but I continued, “Who is this person and why do you want to end him so much?” “No other person than Luke, the loathsome bastard.” My mouth flew open as it dawned on me. Axel must be the leader of the rogues that was caught some months ago. Wasn't that about six months now? But why was he talking so much about taking Alpha Luke's position? Certainly, I knew there's more to be revealed so I turned to ask the next question. However, the jingling of keys on the prison door made me pause. Two guards strolled in and immediately went for Axel. “It's time for another show, huh?” Axel asked as one of the guards dragged him up, the other bringing out a cuff to hold his hand. “You won't get so lucky today,” the one with the cuff responded to his question with a dark chuckle. “Six powerful wolves are waiting to end you. Certainly, a gruesome death awaits you.” Axel gave a short laugh, “Sounds like some fun, but I won't be going down without giving you all a parting gift.” He gave me a small nod as he was being dragged out. My mind raced after I fully process what he meant by ‘parting gift’.
