Chapter 2

The car ride stayed silent, Mia wanted to say something but she could tell he Father was trying his best to keep from crying. Her Father was a strong man, but she knew he would break down once they were in the town they would be calling home. Mia wished she could have seen her Mother before she died, but knew it would have probably made things worse.             Mark stopped the car. “Stay here I have to find out if they have our home ready for us.” He said looking at her. “I promise I wont be long.” He said getting out of the car.             Mia watched her father disappear into a building, she already hated this place. She didn’t want to live here, especially now. She wasn’t even sure she could deal with the new school ontop of everything else.             Thirty minutes later, her father returned to the car. “We are going to have to stay in a hotel, they will have our home ready in a couple of days.” He said putting he car in drive. “I will have to go back to work tomorrow, so I am going to get you settled into the hotel and give you money for a couple of days, so I can get things square with my old work, and the house there.” He said watching the road.             “So you’re going to leave me here alone, without anyone?” Mia said sounding a little worried.             “Yes, I need to load the car up with our stuff, and I really could use the time alone.” He said pulling into a hotel room. “Don’t worry I already told the base where you would be out. They will send someone to check on you to make sure you are okay.” He said turning the car off.             They both got out of the car and headed into the hotel. “I need one room please.” Mark said. They got their key to their room, Mark opened it and let Mia go in first. “Kind of roomy in here.” He said.             “Yeah if we were both staying here.” She said looking at Mark.             “I know you don’t like that you have to stay here by yourself, it actually might do you some good. We’re not that far from the school that you will be going to, maybe you could check it out.” He suggested.             “Really you’re going to make me go to school, even after Mom died?” she whined.             “Yes.” He said walking back to the door. “I will bring in your stuff so at least you have some of your stuff.” He said closing the door before she could protest.             Mia went to the window, she watched her Dad grabbing some of her stuff out of the back seat. A man stopped to talk to him, she wished could hear what they were saying. The man looked up and into her eyes. She backed away from the window. Something about him scared her.             Shortly after that, Mark returned to the room, a couple of boxes and her laptop. She helped him bring the stuff inside. “Well that is everything he said.” He pulled out his wallet and gave her a credit card. “Now I don’t want you thinking you can buy whatever you want, you know better.” He said. “But make sure you get plenty to eat, and if you need cash, here the pin.” He said writing it down on a piece of paper.             “Are you sure you don’t want me to go with you?” she said putting her laptop on the desk. She was hoping Jenny would have emailed her by now.             “No Mia.” He said shaking his head. “I am going to get everything packed, the base already knows that I will be needing help, so they are going to send some guys to help with the heavy stuff. The movers will have the house set up by the time I get back.”             “You said you were going to be gone a few days, that doesn’t sound like a few days.” She said shaking her head.             “Well I will try my hardest to get back in a couple of days. Once everything is settled I will be back I promise.” He said grabbing his keys. “I will call you when I get back to the house. Get used to this place, we’re calling it home.” He said kissing her on the forehead.             She went back to the window and watched her dad wave to him, and then get into the car and drive off.             Mia made sure the door was locked before she sat down and turned on the computer. Of course, there was still no word from Jenny. She needed her best friend, and she disappeared. She wondered what happened.             Looking out the window it was dark already, she grabbed her cell phone and headed to the nearby McDonalds. She was starving, and figured she better eat and then she would go to bed. She already missed her old life. She didn’t know how many friends she would meet going to this night school. She didn’t care either.             Once inside the McDonalds, she ordered and sat at a nearby table until they called her number. She moved to the back of the restaurant. She slowly ate her fries, hoping she would hear from her father, but it had only been a little while since he left. A few people came into the restaurant. They looked at her, but didn’t wave. She kept her head down.             She heard the kids laughing, they must be from the night school. One of the boys came over to Mia and sat in front of her. “You must be new.” He said breaking the silence.             She looked up. “Yeah I guess.” She said grabbing a fry.             “My name is Shane.”             “Mia.” She said looking at him. “Do you go to that night school?”             “Yeah of course. It’s so much better then day school. You can do what you want during the day but the night school is better.” He said taking one of her fries. “When you come in come find me I will help you.” He said. “Nice to meet you Mia.” He said getting up from the table. He rejoined his friends.             Mia finished her meal and walked past the group of kids. “See you soon Mia.” Shane called. Mia turned and waved to him before leaving.             She went back to her hotel room, at least she knew someone at the school. She wasn’t sure when she would have to start, the sooner the better she guessed. Maybe this new town would be good for her.             Mia climbed into bed, she kept her cell phone near her. As she was falling asleep her phone rang.             “Hello?”             “Hey Mia just dad, I made it back. Did you get yourself something to eat?”             “Yeah I met a kid from the night school, he told me to come and find him when I get enrolled.”              “Well I already sent the paperwork to them, so when you get a call from them they will tell you when your first night is. Get some sleep, I’m going to knock out myself.” He said before hanging the phone up.             Mia drifted off to sleep, thinking about Shane. He was cute, but probably someone that wouldn’t keep his word, it was too good looking.             The next morning came around, her Dad hadn’t called, but he was probably busy packing or getting things handled, it was okay she didn’t have anything more to tell him about this new place. It was quiet at least during the day. There was no cars on the road, nothing. She thought that was weird, but cool in a way. She wasn’t going to get McDonalds again, she still had some left overs, she popped them in the microwave.             Turning on her computer, she was going to send Jenny a message, but to her surprise Jenny finally emailed back.             “Sorry Mia, my parents made me leave in the middle of the night. We’re in some crazy town in Canada. I hate it here, I wish you were here. Love Jenny.”             “Hey my Dad did the same thing, except we’re only a few hours from where we used to live. Mom died in a car accident, sucks..” she said in her email back to her friend. She felt better knowing Jenny didn’t leave her behind. It sucked that Jenny was in Canada, she hoped her friend would have been there with her.             Mia took a shower, as she was drying her hair her phone rang. “Hello?”             “How’s it going there, I miss you.”             “Hey Dad, I miss you too. Its quiet here at the moment. Not sure why, you think there would be some kind of life on the streets but nothing.” She said walking to the window. “It’s like this town sleeps during the day and is active at night.”             “Yeah I was told that.” He said clearing his throat. “That is why I took the job, it’s a lot easier when you don’t have people blocking your way when you are in a rush.” He said laughing into the phone. “I wont keep you, some of the guys are here already loading up the big stuff in the truck.”             “Oh okay Dad, just give me a call when you can. I am lonely here.” She said with a sad face.             “Maybe I can get one of the guys from base to take you to your school, so you can meet some of the kids that way you are not so lonely.” He suggested.             “Maybe, I am just home sick is all.”             “I know you are, but we cannot change what we live now.” He said clearing his throat.             “I promise I will hurry up here, I am planning your mothers funeral, so when I get back we can get her buried. They already have the plot made for her and I.” he said trying not to sound sad.             “Ok, yeah I’m going to go.” She said. “I love you Dad.             “I love you too Mia, I will hurry up here.” He said before hanging up the phone.             Mia finished getting ready, she wanted to go shopping, and she may even walk to the school to see what it looks like. She wasn’t sure if she wanted to go when all the kids were there, maybe it would be good to show herself there so she could hopefully have some more friends when it came to going to school.             As she walked around, she noticed a lot of the stores were closed, it was eerily quiet, she decided to go back to her hotel room and wait until it got dark before she tried to do some shopping.             Nightfall came, she looked out the window and the town started to come alive. “Geeze Dad was serious about this town being a night time place.” She said putting on her shoes. She planned to go to the school. Maybe she could get her classes while she was there.             She walked the two or three blocks to the house, there were a lot of kids hanging outside, some stopped and stared at her wondering who she was. She wanted to turn around and hide, but she hear a familiar voice.             “Mia!” Shane said walking up to her with a couple of his friends. “You finally coming to class.”             Mia shook her head. “No my Dad thought it would be good to come and check it out. Since everything is at night, it’s weird.” She said shyly.             “Oh hey this is Mike and Trevor.” He said pointing to his friends. “If anyone bothers you let us know and we’ll take care of it.” He said wrapping his arm around her neck. “Come I will show you around.             As they walked into the school, she heard people whispering, but she couldn’t make it out.             “Don’t worry.” He said looking at her. “They know you are new, and they know when I pick up a friend they usually know there is a reason.” He said laughing. “I promise you will like it here.” He said pulling the door open. “Let’s go to the office to see if you have a schedule yet.” He said pulling her into a room.             “Okay.” She half smiled. He moved his arm from around her neck.             “Ah Mia Reynolds.” The man behind the desk. “Your Father called and enrolled you, you start next week.” He said looking at her. “Let me get your schedule, and since you already know Shane, I’ll give him a pass to show you around.” He said handing her a piece of paper. “Welcome to Night School.”
