Chapter 6

1976 Words
Celeste's POV I slowly opened my eyes and take a few minutes before getting off the bed. I slowly walked towards the door and then stepped out from Theodore's room but after taking the first step I didn't bother to move when I saw Theodore talking to an unfamiliar woman. "It's Mommy's birthday Theodore you should be there," the woman uttered while looking at Theodore with frustration written on her face. "She will just ask me when I will get married, Alex. I am tired of hearing that question over and over again," Theodore responded with the same level of frustration. "What happened between you and Estella?" the woman named Alex asked and upon mentioning the name Estella I can't help but wonder who is that woman. I am assuming that she is Theodore's ex-lover since she mentioned that name last night while kissing me. "She left," Theodore responded with pain laced in his voice. "Why?" Alex asked in a much calmer tone. "I don't know," Theodore responded followed by a chuckle maybe to hide the pain that he has inside. Alex let out a deep sigh then after a while she looked to my side so I plastered an awkward smile. The shock was written on Alex's face when she saw me standing in front of Theodore's room. "H-Hi," I awkwardly greeted then raised my right hand. Theodore looked in my direction when he heard my voice. "Who is she?" Alex asked without taking her eyes off me. "A friend," Theodore responded but it seems like Alex didn't believe her. Alex turned her head to Theodore and then looked at Theodore intently. "You can't lie to me Theodore, is she your new woman?" Alex asked. "No," Theodore responded opposing the conclusion that Alex have made. I felt fear creep into my system when Alex walked towards me and then looked at me intently. She looked at me from head to toe which made me feel uncomfortable. "You're his woman right?" she asked while looking at me intently and I don't know how I should respond. I am too nervous to even move. "I'll tell this to Mom Theodore," she uttered then looked at Theodore with a mischievous smile plastered on her face. Theodore immediately walked in our direction. "Don't you dare Alex," he uttered and it sounded like a threat but Alex didn't take him seriously. Alex kept on smiling to tease Theodore and I can tell that she is succeeding in getting him pissed. "Attend her party and I will keep my mouth shut," Alex uttered then after that she turned her head on me. "You should come too," she added which made my forehead crease. "She can't," Theodore answered at my place. "Then I will tell Mom that you and Estella because you cheated with this woman," Alex uttered while looking at me smiling from ear to ear. "That sounds like a real story right?" she asked but I am still dumbfounded having no idea if I should intervene in this conversation. "No you won't," Theodore uttered then held Alex's arms and made Alex's head turn in his direction. "Yes I will Theodore," Alex responded with a teasing smile still plastered on her face. "Fine. Just don't make up any stupid stories," Theodore finally gave up and agreed to Alex's request. Alex then faced me again and forcefully pulled her arms that is being held by Theodore then extended her hand to introduce herself. "Alex Stratford, Theodore's younger sister," she uttered with a warm smile plastered on her face. I awkwardly took her hand and then flashed a forced smile. "Celeste Dawson, Theodore's friend," I nervously responded but she just laughed at the way I introduced myself. "Friend my ass," she uttered then after that turned around and faced Theodore again. "The party will start at 7 pm, Mom and Dad will be waiting," she uttered then bumped her brother's shoulder then walked towards the door planning to leave Theodore's unit. Before Alex completely leave Theodore's condo she turned around and then looked at me. "Nice meeting you Celeste," she uttered then leave when it is only me and Theodore I felt fear creep inside my system once again. "Do I have to come with you?" I asked to hope that maybe I can still back out. "Alex is expecting me to come with you, don't worry I will pay you to double," Theodore uttered so I have no choice but to nod my head. "Can I go home first, I promise I will be back before 7 pm," I uttered. "You better be," Theodore responded and upon hearing his response I left his unit carrying my bag and then grab a taxi to bring me to the hospital. After an hour of driving, I arrived at my destination. I walked towards my daughter's room and upon seeing her angelic face I felt recharged. Ever since I started working with Theodore I have had more time to spend with Ava and even though the job that I am doing is considered immoral in eyes of some I am still thankful that I accepted it because it gave me enough time to spend with my daughter and I can save money for her operation. Theodore's POV I did my daily routine. After eating my breakfast I headed straight to my office to get some work done. Today we will have a site visit for the new hotel that we are planning to build. We drive towards the site after having our lunch to inspect the whole place and to check the progress of construction. Engr. Smith the head of the construction team made us wear safety gear before roaming the whole place. Engr. Smith is a woman but I never doubted her capabilities when it comes to constructing the hotel since she has a nice background. "It will take us approximately a year and a half to finish the whole building," she informed me so I nod my head and we continued walking but all of a sudden she accidentally tripped into a metal chunk. "Ouch," she complained while sitting on the ground. Her heels broke and when I saw blood on her left foot I immediately bent down to check it. "I will bring you to the hospital," I told her then without any hesitation I took her in my arms and walked towards my car. I made Engr. Smith sit on the passenger seat then I walked towards the driver's side. When I am inside the car I immediately started the engine and pulled my car out of the parking lot. It took us half an hour of driving before we reached the nearest hospital. When we arrived Engr. Smith was transferred to a stretcher. The nurses started cleaning her wound and since it is a bit big cut she had three stitches. When they are done treating her I walked towards the seat beside her bed. "How was it?" I asked. Engr. Smith smiled at me. "It's fine. It hurts a bit but the pain is bearable," she assured me and those words lift the worry that I have inside me. I nod my head and then let out a deep breath. "I will buy something to drink," I told her then excused myself. I stepped out of the room and while walking in the hallway I bumped into a little kid. "Ouch," she uttered while holding her head. I immediately bent down to check her. I looked at the little kid intently and when she looked at me I felt something inside, maybe fear that I might have hurt her. "Ouch," she repeated while holding her forehead her eyes are half closed while looking at me and I have this feeling that she is faking it. "May I see?" I politely asked but she firmly shook her head. I let out a deep breath having no idea how to deal with this kind of situation. I am not good when it comes to handling kids and as of this moment, I am completely lost. "Hey it's not my fault okay it was you who bumped into me," I told her and upon hearing those words she cried so I immediately looked around. I started to panic when her cries became louder so I held her shoulder and made her face. "Hey stop crying," I demanded but she cried even more. I let out a deep sigh and closed my eyes intently to have more patience in dealing with this kind. "Shhh, stop crying, I will buy you anything you want, do you want anything?" I started bargaining and upon hearing my words she stopped and looked at me with teary eyes. "Ice cream," she responded then sniff and wipe the tears off of her face using the hospital gown that she is wearing. I let out a deep breath then stood up and extended my hand. The little kid immediately took it. "You do know that you shouldn't let strangers take you right?" I asked and she nod her head but her hand is still holding mine. "Then why are you coming with me?" I asked then looked at her. "You look like a good person," she cutely responded which almost made me smile. "But still, you shouldn't trust easily, understand?" I told her and she nod her head without letting go of my hand. I let out a deep breath once again when I realized that she won't leave without having her ice cream so we walked toward the hospital's cafeteria. I ordered chocolate ice cream for her then we sat at the table near the window. "What's your name?" I asked while sitting in front of her. "Ava," she cutely responded then dig into her ice cream and take a spoonful. She happily took a bite. "Are you sick?" I asked curiously. When Ava nod her head sadness surged inside me, I didn't know that I have soft spot for kids. "How old are you?" I asked. Ava raised her right hand showing her five fingers indicating that she is five years old. "Does it tastes good?" I asked when I saw her happily eating the ice cream. "Yes," she happily answered while eating the ice cream messily so I immediately grabbed the tissue and wipe the side of her lips. "Where's your Mommy?" I asked. "She is signing some documents for my operation," she responded and as a five-year-old kid, she answered me smartly. "Operation?" I asked and she nod her head. "Mommy said I have a heart disease," hearing those words come out from Ava's mouth made my heart sink. "Will you buy me another ice cream if my operation is successful?" she cheerfully asked. I swallowed hard when I felt a lump in my throat after suppressing the tears that were about to fall. "I will I promise," I told her then smiled and pinched her cheeks. "Ava!" when we heard someone calling her name I immediately look around to see who it was and there I saw an old lady looking in our direction. She immediately walked towards us when she saw Ava. "I have been looking for you," the old lady uttered then took Ava in her arms then after that she looked at me. "I'm sorry did she cause you any trouble?" she worriedly asked so I immediately shook my head. "It's fine Ma'am," I politely responded then after that looked at Ava. "This is my payment for the ice cream, thank you, kind stranger," Ava uttered then gave me a candy. I smiled while looking at her payment. After that, they left and as I watch them walk away I felt something strange inside my system, some sort of longing and sadness and I have no idea where that came from.
