Nick's POV
Everyone congratulated me, including Frederick. He seemed happy for me. He had never shown any sort of enmity towards me as I did to him. Before leaving the meeting room, dad asked me to meet him in his cabin. I handed over the file in my hand to Roy and followed dad. Inside the cabin, Frederick was also there with my dad.
"You did a great job, Nick," Frederick said,
"Thank you Fred. So did you take a day off from work?" I asked tauntingly.
"No, I was just going to my office when uncle Louis asked me to stay behind." He replied without any reaction. We both turned towards dad.
"As you both know, I want to give up my alpha position to the next generation so that I can concentrate on my other duties. We just have two options and those two options right now are in front of me. One of you has to take over for me as the new Alpha. Nick, there are a lot of things you don't know about our kind." Dad said,
"I don't have any problem if Fred takes over for you as Alpha," I stated.
"I don't do either, because Fred was always my first option. But he has other problems because of which he is not ready to accept the Alpha position. Besides that, I can handover my business only to the one who will be my true successor. If that means I will have to wait for my next generation, then I will wait." Dad said,
"What do you mean? Why are you connecting the Alpha position with your business?" I asked.
"That's exactly what I told you earlier. You don't know anything about our kind and I would say it's because of your mother. She accepted me after finding out the truth. But always try to keep you away from that truth. Do you even know how to recognize a werewolf from a human?" Dad asked.
"Of course I do. Werewolves are not common and always try to be hidden in front of a human." I said,
"Do you know the people who work for us?" He asked again.
"Not everyone, but yes, I know the ones who handle the top positions," I said,
"Then tell me, how many of them are from our pack or atleast a werewolf?" Dad asked, making me stunned.
"Wait, we do have employees who are werewolves?" I was shocked.
"Fred, didn't I tell you that he wouldn't know anything even about business," Dad said to Fred.
"Uncle Louis, he will learn everything gradually. Just give him a chance to get to know us," Fred suggested.
"I don't understand, why should I be a part of your association to run the business? I agree that I don't know how to recognise a werewolf from a human. But that doesn't make any difference. I have been living a peaceful life until now without knowing that. Dad, I promise that I will handle the business really well. Please give the Alpha position to Fred." I said,
"You don't have to tell me what I should do." Dad started to get angry.
"Nick, there are reasons why I can't take up the Alpha position. First of all, I married someone from another pack. My wife Selena is the only daughter of the Alpha of their pack. We didn't have any problem being from two different packs because of your father. Uncle Louis has kept all the packs of the state of Columbia really close. We have a friendly relationship with all the packs. That's why we don't have any problem finding our mate from other packs. Just like us, my wife Selena's pack has a tradition. The Alpha position is handed over to the next generation of the Alpha. Since Selena is the only child of her parents, she will be the one to take over from her father. But their pack also has another tradition. The Alpha can only be males. That means the one who will marry her will have to take up the position. When I found her and realized that she was my mate, I went to uncle Louis. We moved the matter officially and they agreed to marry Selena to me on only one condition. So I promised them that I would take over her father as the Alpha when the time came. That's the reason why I can't take over your father as the Alpha," Fred explained.
"There are other options too. I mean we have other cousins who will definitely be interested in the Alpha position." I said,
"That's not possible because the Alpha position is always taken over by the eldest male of the next generation. Actually, you are the eldest but they considered me because I already have a successor. None of our cousins have that privilege because they are not yet married," Fred explained.
"They can get married and have a family. That way dad won't have to force me to marry someone I didn't even meet." I suggested.
"Fred, I think you should take over me in all respects. I will cancel the announcement to make him the CEO. You can definitely handle the Alpha positions of two packs." Dad said,
"But dad, why should you hand over the business? You can give him the Alpha position and I can handle the business." I asked.
"I want to make it clear, Nick. I want my successor to take over for me in all respects. I will just hand over my business to the one who proves himself as a good Alpha. I know Fred is damn good at business and he would make a great Alpha too. Nick, if you want to have the business, you will have to accept the truth. You are a werewolf and you will have to take over the Alpha position if you want to take over the business," Dad declared.
"Okay, I will agree with you, but still, why should I get married to someone I don't know?" I asked.
"Because Alpha position can be taken over only by a married man." Dad said,
"Fine, I will marry someone I know. I mean, an American," I suggested.
"Why do you see people on the basis of their race? Everyone is equal, irrespective of their caste, creed, religion, race or nationality. Rozario's are Anglo Indians and believe in Christianity just like us." Dad said,
"But they are humans. I could marry someone from our group, I mean someone who is a werewolf," I suggested.
"What if the one we chose is not your mate?" Dad asked,
"What if Miss. Rozario is not my mate?" I asked in return.
"I agree with him." Fred backed me and I liked him this time. He is not bad. I have always misunderstood him.
"You can always mark her and make her your mate. If we choose someone among us and later she finds her mate, that might affect your marriage." Dad opined.
"But you still give me one month to find someone I would like to marry." I said,
"Yes I did. But you will have to promise me that if you don't find anyone in the next one month, you will marry Miss. Rozario. Moreover, you will have to find someone with a good background and that, too, from our kind. I can't risk the security of our clan just because you want to marry a native. Remember, you just have a month from today. Today is 13 November. You will have to find someone before 12th December. We will all leave for India on the very next day, which is 13th December," Dad declared.
"Okay dad, I will take your leave then." I stood up to leave.
"Wait, I want to talk to you about something more important." I sat back on the chair.
"Since you have agreed to take the position of the Alpha, you will have to be a part of the pack. You should know your people before you take the oath to protect them. You have to go through a training process to be a good alpha. I know you are not comfortable on days of a full moon. That's why I have arranged a meeting tonight. You will meet your people and get used to it before joining the pack on full moon days. Fred will be there to guide you. Today is just the meeting of your generation. That means I won't be there. Fred and your cousins will join you. Be ready by 7.00. You can go with Fred." Dad said, and I agreed.
I don't have to worry because none of them will be in their true form because it's not a full moon day. I don't even know where they met. I took my leave and went to my cabin where Roy was already waiting for me with coffee and some important files to be signed. Roy has been my support system for the last 8 years. But I can't even tell him about tonight's meeting.
I don't care about the Alpha position, but I do care about my business. I can't just give it away. I will have to prove myself worthy of the business. My first step will be taking that CEO position. I will not have to worry once I take over the entire business. I kept thinking over tonight's meeting. Will it be just like the meetings at the office? Will there be many werewolves? Do all of them know me? Well, I have never been among them before. Will they accept someone they don't know as their leader? I don't know the answer. I will have to wait for tonight to get those answers.
Then again, dad's words resonated inside my head. Why did he ask if I knew how to recognise a werewolf from a human? Are there any werewolves around me? But what's the difference between the two? I have mingled with so many people but, were there any werewolves among them? Why did he ask if I knew the employees of the company? Does a werewolf work for us? Of course, the werewolf works. I am a werewolf and I do work. But what's the difference between a human and a werewolf? How will I ever know how to differentiate them other than on full moon days? It's going to be really hectic. Dad said that I would get training. I hope I will be able to differentiate between a human and a werewolf after the training. I sent Roy back to his seat because I didn't want him to see my recklessness.
I got up from my chair and went to the washroom. I looked at my reflection in the mirror. I could just see a human being. I would never have known if I hadn't seen myself in the mirror that night at the mansion. I checked each single part of my body, from the toes to my head. Nothing is different from that of a human body. When I am not even able to find any difference in my own body, then how will I know about others? I am going insane and I will have to find the answer soon. I patiently waited for the sun to set.
