Nick's POV
By five I left the office. I am getting really nervous as the time passes. I don't know why, but something is making me really nervous just like I am going to attend some exam. I never felt this nervous except for my driving test. Years back when I applied for a driving license, I was given the date of the full moon day. I was really nervous because I was afraid that I might shift to my wolf form during the test. My mom did tell me that we only shift at night when the moon comes out. But still I didn't believe it and just somehow finished my test. After that day, I feel the same nervousness tonight. I know it's not a full moon, but I have heard that most werewolves can shift whenever they want. I have never tried it because I hate that side of myself.
After reaching the apartment, I took a nice shower and got ready for the meeting. It was 40 minutes past 6 when I came out of my room. One of the servants brought me my coffee. I was flipping through the channels sipping my coffee, when I got a call from Fred informing me that he was waiting for me in the parking lot. I took my car keys and went off.
"Good evening Fred, you can go in the front and I will follow you," I said,
"Good evening Nick and we are going together in my car." Fred said,
"No, I will go in my car." I said,
"You can't because your car will not be permitted to get inside to where we are going." He said,
"Why?" I asked.
"Because you are not yet a member of the club we are going to," Fred said,
"So are we going to a club? Do clubs allow such meetings?" I was amused.
"This is not a club you are thinking about. It doesn't have anything to do with human beings. The club we are going to is actually an association of our kind. We are being categorized on the basis of our age. Today, only those belonging to the age group of 20 to 35 are going to attend the meeting. I am their head and we need a password for entering the premises of our meeting place. We decide the password just an hour before the meeting and pass it on through our group members. Today I am going to introduce you to the members of the club and also get you membership." Fred said,
"So is there any membership card?" I asked curiously.
"No, there is no membership card but a tattoo. You can make it anywhere on your body. You just have to show the tattoo next time you go. That means having the tattoo will not give you access to the club. You still have to know the password," Fred explained.
"All these seem to be really complicated. I will come with you in your car." I said, going to the passenger side.
As soon as I stepped inside, he started the engine and took the car forward. He drove towards the east, leaving behind the city and entering more remote areas. After about an hour of driving, the car stopped in front of thick forest. Fred got out of the car and went near one of the trees and touched it. Suddenly, a screen appeared on it and that's when I realized that it was an artificial tree. They have used great technology even in the woods. I could see Fred pressing some codes and the trees in front of me began to move, making a way for the car. Fred came back and got inside the car and took it forward but stopped just in the middle of the gateway that had just formed.
"Why did you stop here?" I asked.
"Every vehicle has to be scanned," he replied.
"You mean there is a scanner in the woods." He nodded.
"But I don't see any other vehicles," I stated.
"Well, there are actually four entrances to this place. This entrance is just for the Gareth family." He said,
"What if someone tried to trespass?"
"Well, the security is really tight. This is just the entrance. There are more security checks on the way." A green light flashed at a distance and Fred took the car forward.
"By the way, let me tell you that you will have to give blood samples at the next security check."
"What's the need for blood samples?" I was confused.
"As I told you, the security system is really tight, no one except the members can enter the premises. Since you are not a member yet, you have to submit your blood samples so that they can check your lineage. There won't be any problem because you the blood of Gareth's family." Fred said,
"Then will they allow me in before knowing the result?" I asked.
"You have no idea how advanced our clan is. The moment your blood is drawn out in the machine, the result will be out. Just be patient and you will see everything yourself." Fred smiled and, for the first time in my life, it felt like having a brother.
I tried to have a look at the surroundings but I couldn't see anything except trees and that too because of the headlights. I could feel the dense forest as we went further along the path. But I wonder why the car is moving so smoothly. Is there a road in the middle of the forest?
"Fred, are we running on a road?"
"Yes, only this entrance has a well built road. Other members of the pack have to use another 3 entrances. Their vehicles are not allowed inside the woods. They have parking facilities outside the woods," Fred explained.
"That means they have to walk through the forest," I wondered.
"Yes, and they probably use their wolf form to reach the place. It becomes easier that way. You know, we get speed when we are in our wolf form."
"That means you can shift whenever you want," I asked.
"Yes, everyone does have that power." He said,
"You mean, I do have that power?" I was startled.
"Of course you do. You inherited it by birth and nothing can change that. I wonder how you would look in your wolf form. I mean look at you, you are just breathtakingly handsome that any girl would fall over you." He complimented.
"You are not bad either. How do you look in your wolf form?" I asked.
"Just like every other normal werewolf."
"Then what's special in your world? I mean, is there any specific color or something like that which makes a wolf special," I asked.
"First of all, it's not my world, it's our world. Generally it's brown or black with a mix of grey color. Rarely can you find a red wolf, which is the most dangerous form of our kind. Our pack or the neighboring packs don't have a red wolf. I have heard that red wolves are common in packs outside Columbia. I have heard that there are white wolves, but I haven't seen one in my life. It's rare to see a pure white wolf," Fred explained.
"How many packs are there in Columbia?" I asked.
"I think about six or seven packs and uncle Louis is the head of all the packs. In other words, he is the king of Columbia. I have heard that before uncle Louis took the position of Alpha, packs within Columbia used to fight with each other. Actually, a lot of Omegas died before uncle Louis came." Fred said,
"What's Omega?" I asked.
"So you don't know anything about the hierarchical structure of the packs. Omegas come last in that hierarchy. They are just like slaves. But it did change after uncle Louis. He ordered everyone to treat omegas with love and respect. They now have almost an equal position as pack warriors. I will just give you a brief explanation about the positions in a pack. Alpha is the highest rank, as you know. Luna is an alpha female. Then comes the beta, who is just below Alpha and has powers to give orders in the absence of Alpha. My father and uncle Johnson are betas of our pack. Your mother is Luna. My mother and uncle Johnson's wife, Rosita, are beta females. Then comes Gamma, who is always ready to fight. They act as generals of the pack and lead when it's time for battle. Then comes pack warriors and Omegas." Fred explained almost in detail.
"That means only males can be Alpha?" I asked.
"That's not necessary. I know packs have a female Alpha. They will mostly be taking over their husband's responsibility." He said, and by that time we had already reached a clearing.
"So what's your position in the pack?" I asked while Fred parked the car.
"We are just members for the time being. It's not necessary that we should have a position in the pack," he said,
I looked around and saw that about 5 to 6 cars could be parked in the clearing. Fred asked me to get out of the car and follow him. I quietly followed him and he walked straight through the woods. Seeing him it felt really easy but I struggled even to drag myself a little bit. I could feel the burning sensation in different parts of my body. I am sure I have cuts on my hands, neck and face. After about 5 minutes of walking, we stood in front of a huge tree. It will probably take about 10 to 15 men to circle the tree.
I looked around and that's when I realized that there was no light but I could still see in the darkness. I touched myself to confirm that I am still in human form. I wondered how I could see everything so clearly in this dark, dense forest. Fred tapped on the huge tree and at once it opened just like a huge door. Fred entered the tree and I followed him. The door closed behind me with a thud. Fred had stopped walking and stood in front of a screen. A computerized voice began to narrate his details and soon a door opened behind the screen.
"Now it's your turn Nick. Once I go inside, the door will automatically get closed. After that, you have to stand in front of this screen. Once it scans your face, it will ask for proof of your identity, which happens to be your blood. After the voice asks for your identity proof, a small device will come out of this wall. You just have to keep your index finger on it. Once the blood gets tested, the door will be automatically opened. I will be waiting for you on the other side." With that, Fred went through the door and it closed behind him, leaving me in an absolute trance.
