CHAPTER 8 MonocansAt the appointed time I changed the watch and returned to my place near the fire. I had no trouble sleeping after this, until we were aroused by the Lieutenant at daybreak. We had our usual breakfast of boiled pork and cornbread and began the day’s march. The scout who had returned the night before was much improved in health, and we all looked forward to recovering Benjamin, the captured one. The Lieutenant suggested that he was probably being held for ransom, and laughingly said that we had enough beads to buy him back. After several hours of climbing over small hills and treading our way through the woods so as not to be seen easily, the Lieutenant ordered a halt.
