Talking it Out

Dominic’s POV I felt Daisy’s eyes on my back as I walked away with her father. Boreas whimpered like a pup in my head. ‘We will see her in a few hours, Bori,’ I assured him. ‘I need more than a kiss or two,’ He whined. I chuckled and rolled my eyes. Cassius glanced over at me with a raised eyebrow. “My wolf, he is upset that we didn’t get more time with Daisy.” “You will see her in a couple of hours,” He laughed. “Boy, I thought Jemma and I were bad. Nearly twenty years and my wolf cries like a baby if she is away from me for more than a few hours.” I watched as his eyes flashed black. “Enoch didn't appreciate my comment.” I snorted. “I would imagine most wolves wouldn’t like being called a baby.” ‘Certainly, not,’ Boreas huffed. Cassius and I walked in silence the rest of the way. His beta, Deke, walked up as we reached the door. “Oh hey, Dominic,” Deke greeted me. “Deke, how goes it?” I shook his hand and then walked into the office with him. Cassius was already sitting behind his large oak desk. The beta shrugged. “Oh, it's going.” I sat in one of the chairs in front of the desk. Deke stood in front of the desk. “What’s up, Deke?” Cassius asked him. “I have the morning report for you,” He stated. “Can it wait a few minutes? Dominic needs to speak with me,” Deke shrugged. “I guess. Do you need me to leave?” Cassius directed his gaze at me. “Does he need to leave?” I shrugged. “He doesn’t have to. Though it’s a little personal.” The beta sighed. “I’ll be in my office, Cass,” He smiled at me and walked out. “So, how are things in regards to the rebel problems you guys are having?” Cassius asked me. “Busy. Father and I are breaking up rebel groups every other day, it seems. The rebellion is growing, and I fear we won’t be able to stop it.” I sighed. I had to tell Cassius what the elders had asked of me. I knew he wouldn’t be happy, but I needed to talk about it to someone, and I wasn’t ready to say anything to Daisy. “Is that why you went a month without seeing Daisy?” He asked, and I nodded. “Rom, did mention it the last time we spoke. I offered some warriors, but he wouldn’t accept them.” “Father is a proud man. Accepting help from you would have made him appear weak,” I said to him. Cassius leaned back in his chair, and it squeaked. “I can understand the sentiment. No King wants to appear weak to his subjects.” He folded his hands on his desk. “Is that what you wanted to talk to me about?” I pressed my lips together. “It's sort of related,” I felt my anxiety rising. Angering the king of werewolves could mean my untimely death. He sniffed the air. “You seem nervous, Dominic.” “I would be lying if I said I wasn’t.” I chuckled dryly. I leaned back in the chair I was sitting in, trying to get comfortable. But having my father-in-law’s eyes looking at me with intensity was making me sweat. My all-black suit was not helping as it seemed to be absorbing the heat from the bright lights. Cassius stood up and gestured to the leather couches on the other side of the office. “Let’s sit over there so you can be more comfortable.” I stood up and followed him to the couches. I sat on one of the couches while Cassius went to a globe and opened it revealing a minibar. He poured brown liquor into two glasses and handed one to me. “Isn’t it a bit early to drink?” Cassius took a sip and sat down opposite me. “Probably.” I sipped the whiskey and relished the burn it caused going down my throat. ‘Boreas, I need you to quit sulking and lend me some strength.’ My wolf snorted. ‘I am not sulking,’ He mumbled. ‘Try not to piss the King off too much.’ ‘I’m not going to piss him off,’ I snarled at him. ‘You are about to tell him that the council of elders wants you to take another woman as your queen and keep his daughter on as a mistress.’ Boreas pointed out. “Whenever you are done talking to your wolf, we can begin,” Cassius chuckled. “Sorry,” I mumbled and drank down the whiskey and set the glass down on a table beside the couch. I took a deep breath and looked Cassius dead on. “What I am about to tell you, I would prefer you not say anything to Daisy.” He swirled the liquor in his glass and looked at me with darkened eyes. “You want me to keep a secret involving you from my daughter?” “Yes, until I can tell her,” I replied to him. “This better not hurt her,” Cassius said in a dangerous tone. “Will it hurt her?” I looked at the ground, unable to say anything to that. “I see,” Cassius hissed. “Should I just kill you now?” My blood ran cold at his tone, and I looked up at him. “I would prefer you didn’t, and I am sure Daisy would not appreciate it.” Cassius chugged his whiskey and stood up and poured himself another drink, and offered me the bottle. I grabbed the bottle and poured some for myself. “Tell me what you need to tell me, Dominic,” He said in a serious but less dangerous tone. I sipped the whiskey to calm my nerves. “Do you know why there is a growing rebellion in my kingdom?” He sat down on the couch. “Your father touched on it.” “Vampires don’t want to be ruled by wolves. I am half-wolf, and my mate and the soon-to-be Queen is a full wolf.” I explained. "And even though Daisy has agreed to allow my father to partially turn her. It is not enough for a growing number of vampires. Part of me agrees. Imagine how angry your subjects would be to be ruled by vampires even if they were hybrids.” I told him. He nodded. “There would be war.” “Exactly, and I am afraid that is where we are heading. The council has offered a solution. They want me to take a full vampire to be my Queen,” I looked at Cassius, who was remaining calm which frightened me. “And Daisy?” He said cooly while swirling the liquid in his glass. I pursed my lips. “They said she could stay on as my mistress,” Cassius growled menacingly, and I held up my hands. “But I could never do that to Daisy,” I pleaded. “I love Daisy with everything I have. There is no other woman in this world that I want as my Queen, but-“ I trailed off. “Sounds like the council has you backed into a corner, Dominic. What happens if you don’t take their offer?” I shrugged. “The vampire kingdom will most likely collapse and descend into chaos. Endangering the supernatural world.” Cassius sighed heavily. “I’m not sure what to tell you. Before I knew Jemma was my mate, the elders pressured me to take a chosen mate as my Queen. I had to be mated before my twenty-fifth birthday or lose the crown. I couldn’t imagine what would have happened to this kingdom had my cousin been crowned king.” “My father told me about that,” I sipped my drink. “I have thought about becoming a full vampire, but unfortunately, that would mean the death of my wolf.” Boreas whined sadly in my head. He hated to hear me think about that option. I wanted to do anything I needed to ensure my place on the throne but sacrificing my wolf was too much. “That sounds like a drastic step to take. I don’t know how that would affect Daisy if part of her mate dies.” He sighed. “I’m sure it would weaken her wolf.” I pursed my lips. Cassius sat forward. “Is there a way to make you a full vampire without killing your wolf?” “Not that I know of. Or my father has never mentioned it,” I replied with another shrug. “I seem to recall Tuatha mumbling something about it once,” Cassius said to me. “About what exactly?” “How there is a way for you to become a full vampire without killing your wolf. I would have to ask Tuatha about it.” I snorted with an air of disbelief. “How does Tuatha know about that and not my father?” Cassius waved his hands. “Tuatha is old.” “My father is five hundred years old, Cassius.” I countered. “And Tuatha is older than that,” He laughed. We sat in silence for a moment before he looked at me with a serious expression. “Look, Dominic, you have the weight of your kingdom on your shoulders. You have to make the right decision for your people.” “Cassius, I want you to know that I would rather abdicate my throne than rule with another woman at my side. Daisy is my Queen, whether I am the king of the vampires or not. The goddess gave her to me for a reason, and I intend to honor it. Daisy will never be a mistress,” I said with mild disgust. “I know how much you love my daughter, Dominic, even though I give you a hard time. As a father, it's hard to see your daughters growing up and doing adult things. Luckily, I don’t think I’ll have to worry too much about that with Piper, and Raina is only nine.” He shifted on the couch. “I trust you will do right by my daughter. And I truly hope you don’t have to abdicate your throne.” “Thank you for talking with me. Don’t worry. I will discuss this matter with Daisy,” I stood up. “I am going to go play basketball with Lincoln,” I laughed. “Let him win a game or two. I hate listening to him complain about you cheating,” Cassius stood up and patted my back. “I don’t cheat. I am just faster than him,” I laughed. Cassius leaned in. “I know.” We laughed as we walked towards his desk. “What restaurant are you taking Daisy to tonight?” I shrugged. “I’m not sure. I heard there was a new seafood place, and you know how much Daisy loves seafood.” “I can call in a reservation there if you want,” He smiled. “I would appreciate that, Cassius. It will make Daisy happy,” I smiled at him. “Thank you.” Cassius sat behind his desk and picked up the phone. “I’ll also have Bruce drive you tonight.” “Thanks again,” I put my hand out to open the door, and it swung open. Beta Deke stepped in with a smile. “See you around, Deke.” The beta nodded, and I walked out of the office. I whistled as I walked down the hallway towards the elevator. I had my luggage brought up to a guest room on the alpha floor. Even though my stuff was in the guest room, I often wound up sleeping in Daisy’s room. If I was near her, there was no way that Boreas would allow us to not sleep together. Once I got up to the guest room, I quickly changed out of my suit and put on a pair of shorts and a tank top. I slathered on a special sunscreen. Even though I was half-wolf, I still burned quickly in the bright sunlight due to my vampire side. Without the sunscreen, I would be in terrible pain. I then headed downstairs to find Malcolm and Lincoln. While walking towards the door closest to the park, I heard someone shout at me. “HEY!” An aggressive voice snarled from behind me. “What the f**k do you think you are doing in here, bloodsucker?” An angry guard charged towards me. “You don’t know who I am?” I asked while looking him up and down. I assumed he must be new as I knew a lot of the guards. He reached out to grab me, but I was too quick for him and used my vampire speed to run around behind him. With a growl, he turned and tried to grab me again. “Don’t make me call the others,” He snarled. I looked around and was surprised the hallway was so deserted. There was always people milling about in this palace. “Call them.” I taunted as he kept trying to grab me. “By the way, tell them that Prince Dominic says hi.” “Dom!” I heard Daisy’s twin call to me from the other end of the hall. I turned to him and was caught by the dimwitted guard and slammed to the ground. “f**k,” I groaned when my head made contact with the concrete. Malcolm ran up to him. “What the hell are you doing?” He pushed the guard away. “Prince Malcolm, I was just subduing this trespassing bloodsucker.” The guard explained. Malcolm helped me to my feet and glared at the guard. “He isn’t trespassing. This Dominic, Daisy’s mate.” The guard's eyes widened. “She’s mated to a bloodsucker?” “Is this your first day or something?” I snorted. “Seriously, I thought that was common knowledge,” I glanced at my mate’s twin. Malcolm shook his head. “That information is lost in some of the podunk packs,” He looked at the guard. “I will be speaking to your supervisor about you.” The guard pursed his lips and bowed. “I am sorry, your highness. This is my first day. I didn’t know that Princess Daisy was already mated and to a bloodsucker-“ He nearly spat. I rolled my eyes. “If you don’t like it, you can always tell the Moon Goddess.” “Get out of here,” Malcolm snarled at him, and the guard scurried away. Malcolm sighed. “Sorry about that, bro.” “It’s alright.” I rubbed the back of my head. “I shouldn’t have let my guard down. My head hurts.” “Do you need to visit the hospital?” Malcolm asked. I shook my head. “Nah, it's nothing my wolf can’t handle.” ‘I could have handled that i***t guard,’ Boreas grumbled. “So, are you going to play ball with Lincoln?” I asked my brother-in-law. Malcolm nodded. “Yeah. We wanted to get some air before we have to do king classes after lunch.” Two years ago, Malcolm had expressed that he didn’t want to be king. But then he changed his mind but not before Cassius caught wind of his indecision. So Cassius started having both Lincoln and Malcolm go to class to learn how to be king. Just in case Malcolm changed his mind again. I personally couldn’t imagine never wanting to be king. “I don’t have classes to learn how to be king. It's just in my blood.” “How do you learn then?” He asked. “I began learning at my father’s side when I turned thirteen,” I explained. Malcolm nodded. “I would prefer that method.” We began walking out of the palace. It took a few minutes to reach the basketball courts in the small park behind the palace. Lincoln was on the court with two other males shooting hoops. “It's about time you guys got here,” Lincoln snarked. “I had work to do, Linc,” Malcolm responded. “And I had to talk to your father,” I told Lincoln. Lincoln shrugged his shoulders and tossed the ball to me. He pointed to the two males with him. “This is Charlie and Oscar. Do you mind if they play with us?” I shook my head. “Not at all,” I waved at them. “Hi, I’m Dominic, Daisy’s mate.” “Charlie,” One of the others held out a hand to me. He was tall and thin with blond hair and brown eyes. “I hope you don’t mind playing with omegas.” “I don’t mind at all,” I told him and looked at the other one I assumed to be Oscar. “Are you an omega too?” He nodded. He was shorter and a little on the chunky side with brown hair and brown eyes. “Charlie and I are brothers. Well, half brothers. We have different dads.” “Can I ask a personal question?” Charlie said while looking me up and down. “Are you a vampire?” I laughed and dribbled the ball. “I am only half vampire.” “That explains why you aren’t burned to a crisp.” Oscar grabbed the ball from me and dribbled it. “Yep,” I laughed. “Exactly why.” “Are you we going to stand around gabbing like girls, or are we going to play?” Lincoln whined. “Okay, Dom, you are on my team.” “So you would rather team up with me than lose,” I smirked. Lincoln rolled his eyes and looked at his brother and the two omegas. “You three can be the other team.” “I see how it is, Lincoln,” Charlie laughed. “I just really need to win,” Lincoln grabbed the ball from Oscar. Malcolm snorted. “This is a casual game, not the NBA finals, Linc.” We began the game and spent two hours on the court until lunchtime. Lincoln and I beat the other three twice. While walking back to the palace for lunch, Lincoln taunted his brother and the omegas. “I am better than you, Mal,” He taunted Malcolm. “Everyone knows you are better a basketball than me, Linc,” Malcolm snarked. Lincoln kept dancing and looked at the omegas. “Do you guys have to go back to work? Cause I want to play after lunch.” “I don’t, but Oscar does,” Charlie responded and looked at me. “We both work in the kitchens.” “Cool, is that why you smell faintly of garlic?” I asked. “Oh s**t, vampires aren’t supposed to get near garlic,” Oscar sounded panicked. I started laughing. “It's cool, Oscar. I love garlic.” “Hey, this guy is pretty cool,” Oscar said to Charlie. “What are you doing later tonight?” Charlies asked. “There is going to be a party in the omega dorm.” “I am taking Daisy on a date. I haven’t seen her in a month, and my wolf is going stir crazy.” I told him. Their eyes widened. “You have a wolf?” Oscar asked. “I thought you were a vampire.” “I am both. My mother is a wolf, and my father is a vampire.” I looked at Malcolm. “They don’t know who I am either, do they?” Malcolm shrugged. “Sounds like it.” I looked at the omegas. “My full name is Dominic DiAngelo, Crown prince of the Vampire Kingdom. My father is King Romulus diAngelo.” “Really, cool!” Oscar stated. “Sorry, dude. Omegas are rarely in the loop when it comes to those on top. Most of our lives revolve around work.” “It is alright, Oscar. I hope you guys aren’t being overworked here.” Charlies stepped in. “Queen Jemma makes sure we are treated fairly. She is awesome.” “That she is.” I agreed. We reached the palace, and the omegas went another way. I went to the dining room with Malcolm and Lincoln. The sweet scent of honeysuckle hit me before we entered the room. Then I stepped in and was greeted by my blond-haired and violet-eyed mate. She was standing just inside the door. I pulled her into my arms and gently kissed her soft lips. “I thought you girls would still be out shopping,” I said to her. She leaned into me. “I wanted to have lunch with my mate,” She responded. I pulled her to the table where her mother and siblings were sitting. Moments later, her father entered, and we ordered lunch. I chatted with Daisy’s parents and siblings and felt every bit a part of their family. After lunch, Daisy and I went up to her room to watch movies and hang out until our evening date.
