Gina looked at me with surprise in her eyes. "Do you know what this means? This is two lines, Kaida."
I smiled, "Yes, I know!"
"Wow... you're carrying the pack's heir. I didn't know you've already been intimate with Alpha Kael."
We were in the storeroom, and I didn't want our voices to echo. I didn't want anyone to know yet. "Shhh... Lower your voice. I don't want anyone to know yet. And we were only intimate once. That was the day he stood up for me to his father."
Gina looked at me in disbelief. "Wow! Congrats Kaida. So Alpha Kael is actually your mate? I still can't believe this."
With a smile on my face, I nodded.
"Wow... And you told me, but I didn't believe you."
"I wasn't even sure myself. I don't know how my weak wolf managed to sense him." It had been three weeks since Alpha Kael announced me as his mate, and I was filled with so much joy. Everything had changed since then. Only Soraya and Alpha Caden weren't pleased with the news.
"But what are you going to do about Alpha Caden? He would never let Alpha Kael mark you as his Luna."
I sighed. I wouldn't lie, it bothered me because Alpha Caden didn't like me one bit. "Well... Alpha Kael said I shouldn't bother about it."
Gina sighed. "Hmm..."
"I'm really happy, Gina. I can't wait for him to mark me and I'll have you by my side all through."
Gina giggled, clearly excited. But then, Soraya called her. "Gina! Since you're forgetting your place!"
Gina quickly left me and hurried to Soraya's side. Soraya then walked up to me, looking me up and down with contempt. "Don't get ahead of yourself, darling. Your mating ceremony is just next week, and tables could turn anytime. Until then, you're still a slave."
For the first time, I stood up for myself. "Yes, tables could turn, Soraya, and once I'm Luna of the pack, I'll make sure you get what you deserve for the maltreatment."
Soraya smirked. "Like I said, don't get ahead of yourself, Kaida. You're still a weakling and a slave. Don't forget that!"
She walked away, leaving me there. But I didn't let her words get to me. No one was ever going to make me sad or hurt me again. As long as I had Kael, that was all I needed.
And with his child in my belly, I couldn't wait to surprise him with the news when he finally marked me and made me his Luna. I was sure with the heir on its way, Alpha Caden would have no choice but to accept me. A child was always a blessing anyway.
I remembered I had a stroll with Alpha Kael this evening. As I was about to step out of the kitchen, Gina appeared with a cup of herbs in her hand. She called me, "Kaida!"
I turned around. "I thought Soraya needed you inside."
"Actually, she wanted you to give these herbs to Alpha Caden. They are his usual morning herbs."
I looked confused. "I should give them to him myself? Why?"
Gina whispered, "I found it strange myself. Alpha Caden doesn't like you, so I wonder why she would want you to deliver it yourself. Besides, you're no longer a slave. Just ignore her, I'll go deliver it to him myself."
"Hmmm..." As Gina was about to leave, I called her back. "Hold on, Gina."
"Is anything wrong?" she asked.
"Hand it over to me. I'll go give it to him myself."
"You don't have to. Besides, he might only get furious seeing you in his room."
I shrugged. "Well, he'll have to get used to me. Since it's his favorite herbs, maybe he wouldn't be that upset."
"You know you don't need to go on any errands or take orders from Soraya anymore, right?"
"I'm fine, I know. Let me just do this. It might help my relationship with Alpha Caden anyway."
Gina handed over the herbs, and I walked up to Alpha Caden's room. But as usual, I wasn't let in by his guards who stood outside his door.
"I brought his favorite herbs for him," I said.
"I'm sorry, but you're not allowed in. I'll hand it over to him myself," the guard replied.
I sighed, then handed over the tea and walked back to my room. I knew that by the time I announced I was pregnant, Alpha Caden would have no choice but to accept me. But for now, I just had to let things be, just as Alpha Kael had told me.
It wasn't even 20 minutes before I heard loud screams from outside. "Soraya! Soraya!" That sounded like Alpha Caden's voice, and I couldn't help but wonder what was wrong. I rushed outside as the noise increased.
Outside, I found the head guard I had just seen a few minutes ago lying on the floor. I was puzzled and scared. Alpha Kael was beside him, trying his best to revive him. Kael once told me they grew up together and were childhood friends, so I understood how important the head guard was to him.
I whispered to Gina, who was also outside. Everyone was confused and had no idea what was going on. "What is happening?" I asked.
Gina shook her head, "I...I... I don't know."
Alpha Caden yelled at Kael, who kept trying to revive the head guard. "He is dead, Kael!"
Alpha Kael's voice broke, "No!"
Alpha Caden shouted, "He died the minute he tasted my herbs."
My heart skipped a beat at those words. Nothing made sense. Alpha Kael rose up, his eyes red with fury, his claws nearly extending. His anger and pain were obvious, his body trembling with barely restrained power.
His eyes were wild, glowing with a predatory gleam, and his muscles tensed as if ready to pounce. He yelled, "Soraya! Who made those herbs?"
Soraya stepped out, trembling with fear. "I... I swear, Alpha Kael, I have no idea what is going on. I made the regular herbs for your father as always."
Alpha Kael's voice thundered, "I asked a question! Who made those herbs?!"
Soraya stammered, "I did! But Kaida insisted on serving it to your father."
I was struck where I stood. "What?! I... I have no idea what you're saying, Soraya. You sent me to deliver the herbs."
Alpha Caden stepped in, his eyes cold and calculating. "Yes! Jack said the herbs were from you, and that’s why I told him to taste it first because I do not trust a good digging slave like you."
Soraya wailed, "So you poisoned the herbs and tried to kill Alpha Caden?"
I shook my head, everything spinning out of control. "Wait a minute... What exactly is happening?" I turned to Alpha Kael, desperation in my voice. "I have no idea what is happening here. Gina told me Soraya wanted me to serve your father, and I found it quite strange."
Alpha Kael's eyes were filled with a fury I had never seen before. For the first time, I could tell he wasn't believing me. He turned to Gina. "Is that true?!"
I looked at Gina, but she only trembled, fidgeting with her fingers, looking between me and Alpha Kael. "Tell him, Gina! Tell him the truth! Soraya told you to give me the herbs, didn't she?!" I cried.
Alpha Kael, his wolf nearly out, yelled, "I am going to kill everyone alive if no one tells me who tried to kill my father and who killed my best friend!"
Gina quickly spoke up, her voice shaking. "Yes! Yes! I saw... I..." She avoided my gaze, gulping hard. "Yes... I saw her telling Soraya she wanted to deliver the herbs herself."
My eyes widened in shock. "Gina!!"
Alpha Kael turned to me, his voice a mixture of hurt and rage. "You wanted to kill my father?"
I cried, shaking my head. "I swear I have no idea what is happening."
Alpha Kael's voice was cold. "And you ended up killing my best friend?"
Alpha Caden joined in, his voice dripping with accusation. "I already told you she was dangerous and not to be trusted. So, because I do not like you, you decided to poison me so you could have everything to yourself, right?"
"Nooo!" I cried, turning to Gina. "Say something!" I pleaded, but she couldn't even look me in the eyes.
Alpha Kael walked up to me and grabbed me by my throat, choking me. "How could you?! You're a murderer, Kaida!"
I struggled, tears streaming down my face. "Alpha Kael, please! I didn't do it! You have to believe me!"
But his grip tightened, and I could see the betrayal in his eyes. "You will pay for this," he growled, his voice filled with pain and fury.
He suddenly let go of me and pushed me to the floor. That was the first time Alpha Kael had ever hurt me.
With his back turned, I pleaded, "I swear I'm innocent. I would never try to poison your father."
Alpha Kael was so hurt; I could feel every bit of his pain and agony. It only made sense now that I was obviously set up.
Alpha Kael yelled, "Get out of here, Kaida! Out! You are herby banished!"
I cried, desperate, "I'm pre..." I was about to spill the news of my pregnancy because I had nowhere to go, but he cut me off as he turned to face me.
"I reject you this instant, Kaida!"
His words struck like a dagger. "I can never be mated to a murderer! I, Alpha Kael, reject you this instant!"
He turned to his father and continued, "Send for my betrothed, father. My mating ceremony is still going to hold."
