Chapter 5

The next morning, as we walked to the kitchen to begin our duties, I noticed everyone avoiding me. They must have all seen Alpha Kael standing up for me. They were probably scared. Gina approached me, a teasing smile on her face. “Seems Alpha Kael has a soft spot for you, Kaida,” she said. I blushed but quickly tried to hide it. “For me? No… he was…” I stammered. Gina giggled. “I was just kidding. Alpha Kael is always that way. Criseda is so lucky to have him.” Her words felt like a punch to the gut. I forced a smile. “I need to go make his room before Soraya comes for me,” I said, trying to change the subject. “I bet she wouldn’t dare after Alpha Kael warned her yesterday,” Gina replied. I smiled and picked up the new sheets and brush, but just as I was about to leave, Soraya yelled my name. “Kaida!” I turned to face her instantly. “Good morning, Soraya.” She looked at me with contempt. “Keep that to yourself! I wonder what gave you the guts to report me to Alpha Kael.” “I didn’t report you, Soraya, I only—” I began. “Keep that explanation to yourself,” she snapped. “You are taken off Alpha Kael’s room.” I was surprised. I knew I hadn't done anything wrong. I was just assigned there yesterday then taken off today? “But I—” “Drop the sheets. You’ll be handling the toilets from now on, and Alpha Caden wants to see you this minute,” she ordered. My heart froze at her words. Why would Alpha Caden want to see me? Could it be because Alpha Kael told him I was his mate? A cold shiver ran down my spine as I tried to prepare myself for whatever awaited me. My head and body were in a state of confusion as I walked to Alpha Caden's room. My hands were shaking as I knocked. I only knocked once when he yelled from inside, "Come in!" I slowly opened the door and stepped in. As soon as I entered, I bowed my head to greet him. “Good—” but he cut me off with a yell. "Shut the door!" I quickly closed the door behind me and stood right in front of it. He looked at me with cold eyes and barked, "Come closer!" I took a few hesitant steps towards him, my heart pounding in my chest. "I said closer!" he roared. I gulped hard and moved closer until I was standing just a foot away from him. He rose from the bed in a swift motion and hit me hard across the face. I stumbled to the floor, my cheek burning from the impact. "Who the hell do you think you are?!" he spat, towering over me as I lay on the floor, tears streaming down my face. "A slave like you, wants to be mated to my son?! Do you know who Kael is? Do you know this pack? We are of a rare bloodline and do not mix with slaves, let alone have a mate like someone as weak as you. What the hell did you sense?! Tell me!" I couldn’t speak, my voice choked by fear and sobs. He yelled again, "Tell me?! A slave like you from nowhere wants to deceive my son that she is his mate? Never! You are a slave and can never be mated to my son! Never!" Just as he finished, the door burst open and Alpha Kael stormed in. "Father!" he yelled. He rushed to my side and helped me up, his touch gentle and protective. "What is going on here?" Alpha Caden sneered, "She is going back to where she belongs. We are going to sell her off to another pack. She could make us some more fortune anyway." "That's not happening," Alpha Kael said firmly. Alpha Caden's eyes narrowed. "The mating ceremony with Criseda will take place in three days." Alpha Kael wrapped his arms around me protectively and yelled, "Enough, Father! It is not happening!" "What do you mean?" Alpha Caden demanded. "I said it's not happening, Father! And Kaida here isn’t going anywhere," Kael declared, his voice filled with unwavering resolve. I continued to sob, the reality of what was happening sinking in. Did Alpha Kael just reject his betrothed because of me? Alpha Caden’s voice was filled with disbelief. "She is betrothed to you!" "And I said it isn’t happening!" Kael shot back. "Is that why you told Soraya to take her off my room services?" "Of course, she has no business tidying up your room. Other, better slaves will do that! She has to go!" Alpha Caden insisted. "You're right about one thing, Father. She actually has no business tidying up my room because she is my mate," Kael stated. "She is not your mate!" Alpha Caden yelled, his face turning red with fury. "She is my mate, Father, and I will make her my Luna!" Kael's words echoed in the room, leaving a stunned silence in their wake. My heart stopped beating the moment I heard those words. "Impossible! Impossible!" Alpha Caden sputtered. "Leave Kaida alone, Father. My wolf sensed her the very minute she arrived here. I felt something different the moment I sensed her," Kael said, his voice calm but firm. "I said you are wrong!" Alpha Caden roared. "Kaida is my mate and I am going to mark her," Kael said with finality. With that, he held me close and walked me out of the room. I didn’t say a word, too overwhelmed by the whirlwind of emotions. Everything was happening too fast. We got to his room, and he led me to his bed and sat me down. "Let me take a look at your face," he said, examining my red and swollen cheek. He looked at me, his eyes filled with sorrow and anger. "I’m very sorry, Kaida. From now on, no one will lay a single hand on you. I will protect you, I promise you." I looked at him, tears threatening to spill from my eyes. "Why, Alpha Kael?" He gently removed the scattered hairs from my face and said, "Do you believe in love at first sight? Because I do. My wolf could feel you before you even arrived here." "But I am not fit to be your Luna, Alpha Kael," I said, my voice barely above a whisper. "You’re a weak one, I sensed it. But you made me feel a way I hadn’t felt before, the minute I set my eyes on you in the dining hall," he said softly. I couldn’t find the words to respond. There was nothing else to say. He gently removed the remaining hairs from my face and kissed me. I closed my eyes and kissed him back, feeling the warmth of his lips. We kissed, and slowly, his hands began to trail all over my body. They moved softly down my back as he then kissed my neck. I clung tightly to his bedspread as his kisses sent shivers through my whole body. Slowly, he laid me down on his bed, his hands moving in between my thighs. Startled, I quickly shifted away. He looked at me and smiled reassuringly. "I won't hurt you," he said. I looked straight into his eyes. And I couldn't lie—I trusted him. I trusted Kael. "What about your betrothed, Alpha Kael?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper. "Tell me you don't feel anything for me," he said, his gaze intense. "Tell me no matter how weak your wolf is, it didn't sense me the very first minute it saw me." I couldn't speak. Of course, I felt something. That was why the tray had slipped from my hands the first time I saw him. I couldn't believe he was my prince charming. Who would have thought my stepmother was actually doing me a favor by selling me off as a slave to the same pack where my mate was? She sold me off to my own mate unknowingly, and now I was going to be his Luna. "But… anyone, your father could walk in here and—" Kael interrupted, "I'm still Alpha Kael, you know." We were both lost in that moment, and I freely gave myself to him in the heat of the moment and the aftermath of his argument with his father. I knew this was the beginning of something great. I held the bed sheets tightly, moaning softly as he became the first man to lay with me. With my face twisted in pleasure and my mouth open, I whispered, "Alpha Kael..." As he moved gently and slowly, he called my name in a way more seductive than ever. "Kaida..." he murmured.
