I Broke a Rule

Lucas POV   Holding a woman with a bleeding head in my arms, I rushed towards the back gate. Looking at her pale countenance, she needs to be treated at once or her condition will worsen.   “Sir Lucas!” the soldier guarding the gate exclaimed the moment he saw me with an unconscious lady on my arm.   “Let me in!” I ordered.   “B-but…” he hesitated.   “Faster!” I shouted impatiently. I know that this is not the protocol, but I feel that this woman’s life is important for some reason. “Her life is in danger.”   The soldier looked at me, swallowed hard in hesitation, and opened the gate. I feel grateful that this is the back gate so we only have two soldiers guarding or else, I would have a more difficult time with all the interrogations.   “Make sure to mention this to no one,” I warned the guards before I ran towards my house the moment the gate opened.   “Marcus, hurry! Open the door!” I shouted.   “Yes, sir!” Marcus said and ran ahead of us.   I rushed inside the house and laid her on the bed. Based on my training in traditional medicine, I know that she needs to be treated now or else, she would die. I did the necessary first aid treatment to stop the bleeding on her head. Ah, the reason why she is bleeding is the wound on her head. What happened to her? After a thorough assessment though, I was not able to find any more wounds on other parts of her body.   “I-is she okay?” Marcus asked nervously as he continued to stay beside me and assist me in treating the woman’s wounds.   I stared at her face and sighed. I hope she is.   “I hope…” I answered simply and continued what I needed to do. “Go to Marnelli and borrow a piece of dress. Ask her to come as well. She needs to change this woman’s clothes.”   “Y-yes, sir,” Marcus said as he nodded. I can hear the nervousness in his voice.   “Marcus…” I said before hearing the door open. “Make sure not to create a noise about this.”   “Yes, sir.”   This woman’s clothes tell me that she is not an ordinary one. She is wearing a robe with high-quality material. What happened to her? Who is she and why is found wounded in the middle of the forest? What is the story of her life? I shook my head as I stared at her. I have no problems keeping her here, but I am not sure if my master is open to that idea. He is so strict as regards this kind of thing. After all, this place is not a place to hide. It is not a place open for everybody either. It is exclusive to some member tribes in this kingdom. If I have to keep her here, then that means that I have to do something to protect her. I shook my head. Why am I doing all these bothersome things for a woman I do not even know?   “Sir…”   Hearing that soft voice, I turned my head around.   “I need your help, Marnelli…” I said in a low voice. “Please change her clothes and make sure she is comfortable.”   Marnelli’s eyes enlarged as she looked at the woman lying down at my back. However, she rushed towards her the moment she heard what I said.   “I’ll be outside this room if you need something,” I said and walked towards the door. “Just call my name and I’ll be here.”   “Yes, sir…”   Opening the door, I left the room and stood outside, near enough to hear Marnelli call me in case she needs something.   “Sir, i-if Master Boltimor knows about this, what will we do?” Marcus asked nervously.   I swallowed hard. I know what he is worried about. Master Boltimor is far from being kind after all. He can be so cruel against those he doesn’t favor but he can be so kind to those he favors.   “I will think of a way…” I answered. I have already made my mind. No matter who that woman is, I will help her. I do not know what happened to her or her enemies are. I just feel that I need to take her under my wings at this time.   “Y-you are not thinking of hiding her here, are you?” Marcus asked, his eyes filled with fear.   “She obviously needs help…” I answered. “Who knows if she needs my protection from abusive people?”   Marcus’ eyes widened as he stared at me while shaking his head in disbelief. I know why. As my assistant, he must be worried for me. I am Master Boltimor’s apprentice after all. He won’t go easy on me once he finds out that I went against his orders of not accommodating people who are not from the member tribes. Based on that woman’s looks, there is no way that she came from one of the member tribes.   “Go back to the gate and warn the guards again. Do what you have to do to keep their mouths shut. I don’t care what ways you will use. Just make sure that no one talks about what they saw tonight to anyone else.”   Despite the hesitation in his facial expression, I saw him nod helplessly and turn towards the main door of my house. I know that he will carry out my order just as I said. He is my trustworthy assistant after all.   I patiently waited for Marnelli to be done with what she is doing. What is taking her so long? Why is she not done changing her clothes yet?   “Marnelli?!” I said as I brought my mouth near the door. I have to know what is happening.   “I’m nearly done, sir,” she answered. “I just needed to wipe some blood that flowed on some parts of her body.”   I nodded my head. She’s doing a good job. I will ask her to accompany her tonight and in the next few days. A few minutes later, I heard footsteps coming towards the door. That must be Marnelli. I turned around when the door opened.   “I need your help,” I said the moment I saw her face. “I need someone to take care of her. Please be that person. I will pay you for your services.”
