Another wolf's pup

Rebecca's pov I showered quickly, my anticipation to talk to Selena bubbling inside me. The more I stayed in the bathroom, the more I wanted to hurry through my normal washing routine. I was excited—like a child—that my wolf could talk. Selena could talk! And the fact that she said she wasn’t mad made the weight on my shoulders a little lighter. “Alright, how do we do this?” I asked aloud, ruffling my hair with the towel in my hand. “You just speak to me in your mind, like you would with a mindlink,” Selena’s voice responded, steady and calm. “Okay... like this?” I asked as I sat on my bed, closed my eyes, and tried to focus my thoughts. She laughed lightly. “Yes, silly, but you don’t have to close your eyes. You can just speak like you normally do, but in your mind.” I felt my cheeks warm at her playful tone. The way she spoke to me made me feel like a child learning something new. “Okay, so where do you want to start?” her voice prompted. “Uh—well... you said I shouldn’t be foolish earlier. Does that mean you could hear my thoughts?” I asked. “Yes. Since your birthday, I’ve been sensing everything around you,” Selena answered. “Oh... then what did you mean? I thought you wanted him as our mate.” I hesitated, unsure of how to phrase it. “I did. On your birthday, when we found him, I felt his wolf, Ryder. I truly wanted his acceptance. I wanted him to mark us.” She paused before adding softly, “But then… it didn’t happen.” I looked down at the floor, my voice barely a whisper. “Yeah, but that didn’t happen... and it’s because of me, Selena. I’m sorry that you had to find a host like me— a slave. If it weren’t for me and my situation, you would’ve had the chance to be with your fated mate.” My heart ached as the words left my mouth. It felt like I was the reason Selena couldn’t be with her true mate. If I hadn’t made the decision as a child, maybe everything would be different. “Nonsense, Rebecca. It’s not your fault.” Selena’s voice was firm, yet comforting. “After I withdrew from you, I was devastated. In fact, I almost died because of his rejection. But strangely enough, something kept me alive.” I froze, my breath catching in my throat at the thought of losing her. “What happened?” I barely managed to ask. “I felt another presence in your body,” Selena said, her tone matter-of-fact. My heart nearly dropped as I placed a hand on my stomach. “You don’t mean—” “Yes, Rebecca. You have another wolf’s pup in your womb,” Selena replied, her tone colder now, I tried to explain quickly, my voice tight with regret. “I assure you, Selena, I didn’t mean for any of this to happen. It was a mistake. We went to the hospital, and the next thing I knew, a doctor did something to me, and then I was a surrogate.” Selena sighed, a soft, resigned sound. “I know that, silly. I can see and sense everything around you, remember? I saw what transpired in the hospital. Although I was at my weakest then, I still saw plenty. I know that you didn’t betray our mate, Rebecca.” “But he chose to betray us,” she added in conclusion, her words laced with a quiet bitterness.
