Run

Rebecca's pov There was a long silence after Selena spoke. Her words echoed in my mind: He chose to betray us. My chest tightened as the weight of her words settled over me. “Wait… do you know the person who’s going to be his—his chosen mate?” I asked, my heart pounding. Selena’s sudden cold tone was alarming. Wolves were instinct-driven creatures; although I could reason and think things through, Selena couldn’t. She was programmed to want our mate, no matter what. The only explanation I could come up with for her icy demeanor was that she knew the other she-wolf. “Yeah, you're right,” Selena’s voice came, a bitter edge to her tone. “Wolves are instinct-driven. Mates are everything to us—they're our strength, our reason for existence. And yes, I was wallowing in anguish for our mate. But that doesn't mean I’ll take his betrayal lightly.” My heart clenched. Betrayal… I thought again. Then, Selena added, “Yes, I know who his chosen mate is, but I won’t tell you. It won’t do us any good.” A chill ran down my spine, and I couldn't help but press her further. “Who is it?” I asked, despite her refusal. She sighed, and I felt a sense of finality in her tone. “I can’t tell you, Rebecca. It’s for your own good.” My frustration mounted. “You telling me the truth would be for my own good, not keeping it from me.” I wanted to know. I needed to know. Who was she? The she-wolf he chose over us. I felt a burning curiosity, but Selena remained silent. She wouldn’t budge. “At least tell me how you found out,” I pleaded, desperation creeping into my voice. Another sigh, this one long and heavy. “It was Ryder—Ryan’s wolf. He gave me that information because I, too, demanded that he at least tell me who they chose over us.” I wanted to scream in frustration, my mind racing. “Then why won’t you just tell me?!” I screamed mentally, my thoughts wild. “I need to know!” “Because it’s not important right now!” Selena’s voice was calm but firm, the edge unmistakable. “Then what is more important than discussing our mate’s rejection?!” I shot back, unable to hold back my bitterness. “The pup in your womb,” she said. I froze. The words hit me like a slap to the face. It was strange how easily I had forgotten about the whole surrogate situation, how the weight of everything else had buried that part of me. “Yeah? What about it?” I asked, trying to mask my growing unease. “I’m going to remove it anyway,” I scoffed, trying to downplay it. “That’s a smart choice,” Selena said, her voice calm yet intense. “Why do you say that?” I asked, puzzled. Did she hate it because it wasn’t from our mate? “No, I don’t hate it.” She seemed to read my thoughts easily. “In fact, I’m grateful for it.” “Okay, now I’m confused. What do you mean?” I asked, my mind spinning. “I was going to die, Rebecca. A mate’s rejection is heavy, and it’s even worse when both your human companion and your wolf don’t want us.” Selena’s voice trembled a little at the end, and I felt a pang of sorrow for her. “Ryder didn’t want you?” I whispered, the thought sending a chill through me. I could feel her nod in the silence. “I don’t know. I think so. He didn’t really put up a fight when Ryan rejected us,” she said quietly, her voice wavering. I felt my heart break for her, but before I could say anything more, Selena steeled herself. “But that’s in the past now. We have bigger problems.” “Bigger problems?” I asked, my mind still reeling. “What’s more important than this?” She didn’t hesitate. “The pup you’re carrying.” My heart skipped a beat, “What do you mean? Why is it so important?” Selena sighed, her voice now a low, steady tone. “As wolves, we often submit to alphas, especially as she-wolves to our mates when they mark us. But the sperm used to conceive that pup had too much energy—too much alpha energy—and that energy seeped into my space, binding me to that alpha, regardless of my will.” I stared at the floor, my mind racing. “Things like that can happen?” I asked, shocked. “Not always. It’s rare,” Selena explained. “But we’re special, Rebecca. We’re sensitive to energy, which makes us powerful and vulnerable at the same time.” “Vulnerable to what?” I asked, the unease in my chest growing. She paused before answering, her tone grave. “It’s why I want you to remove the pup. I’m a senser type of wolf, meaning I feel everything. I can empathize with others like us, soothe their pain. But that pup? The energy inside it has a powerful, overwhelming aura. An aura of death, murder, and darkness.” I froze, a wave of fear crashing over me. “Meaning?” “Meaning,” she continued, “the alpha who fathered it—he’s dangerous. He has the blood of many on his hands. His heart is irredeemable, and his soul is as dark as the void. He’s a man to be feared, Rebecca. So I’m telling you now: set yourself free. Run.”
