Lily called a few hours later to check up on me, while I was busy trying to ignore Alicia’s incessant giggles and the sound of Asher’s laughter. I could tell he was raising his voice so I would hear him laughing, but I pretended not to hear and turned up the stereo until Lily’s call came through.
“Hey, E,” she said. “Just thought I’d give you a heads up. Jake asked me for your number earlier, and he was so sweet and kind as he was asking that I couldn’t say no. I’m sorry if that was wrong, but I genuinely believe he wasn’t part of the guys who wrecked the totem. Please don’t be mad at me.”
“It’s fine,” I replied, rolling over and facing the ceiling. “He texted me already. Said he wants to go out for some coffee.”
“Really?” she asked, and I could already see the smile on her face.
