Ariel
As shitty as it sounds, I was relieved to see Sebastian and his friends ready to leave. I tried to ignore him after the incident in the hallway, but I can't stop thinking about that kiss. I'm the type of woman who goes after what she wants, and tonight that included Sebastian. Just a kiss though. I don't want a relationship as I have enough to deal with in life.
I watch as David and the others head out the door, but Sebastian doesn't follow. Oh no. I need to nip this in the bud as soon as possible. The moment he walks up to the bar, I blurt out, "I'm not looking for a relationship." The pain on his face is noticeable, but he quickly covers it up. "Cocky, aren't you? Who said I was looking for a relationship?" Now I feel stupid for assuming he was interested in more than a kiss.
I feel my face heat up in embarrassment. "Sorry," I mutter out.
"You don't have anything to apologize for. I would like to close out my tab now, please." I quickly take his credit card and run the transaction. I love when people have photos on their credit cards. I feel like it shows what they are passionate about in life. I stare at Sebastian's and I admire the picture of a gray wolf howling at a full moon. Claudette would also love this picture. I miss my baby girl and can't wait to go home and see her.
"Thank you," I say as I hand the credit card and receipt to Sebastian.
We hold each other's gaze for what seems like a lifetime before he finally says something.
"I know you're not looking for a relationship, but how about a friend?" His question left me dumbfounded. A friend? I don't have time enough as it is with my own child, let alone a gorgeous man.
"Sorry. Not interested. Have a good night." The look on his face pained my heart, but I'm standing my ground.
"Okay. Well, if you change your min-
"I won't." I interrupt him rudely. Without another word, he sighs and walks out of the bar.
"Damn. Some guys just can't take a hint. Huh?" Said one of my customers. I faked a smile as I shook my head. "Apparently not," I reply with a forced giggle.
The remainder of my shift goes as usual. Guys continue to flirt and I flash a smile and engage in small talk to gain bigger tips. I'm very thankful that Bella hired me with such little experience. I ensured her that I am a quick learned and I have definitely proved that. Bella flips the sign on the door to close and locks up. I begin wiping down the countertop as she approaches.
"Ariel." She calls my name sounding serious. Oh no, is she firing me? Maybe I am too cocky like Sebastian said.
"Yes?" I reply to my name being called.
"I may have overheard your conversation with Sebastian. He's not like the other men who come into this place. I understand you have Claudette, but what harm would it be to have a friend? Even if it's just someone to talk with over the phone?"
I remain silent, contemplating what she just said.
"Plus, it looked like you were pretty interested when I caught you guys in the hallway," Bella smirks at me.
"I'll think about it." I simply reply, not wanting to discuss this right now.
Unlocking my apartment door, I'm engulfed in a huge hug from Claudette.
"Mommy! Look what I drew for you!" She pulls my hand and leads me to the coffee table in the living room. My mom is sitting on the recliner with a book in her hand. I take a seat on the couch and Claudette spreads all the pictures she drew out on the table for me to see.
"This one is you, me, and grandma!" I smile at her masterpiece. "This is Goldilocks." She points to the picture of our pet goldfish she drew. "And this one is my best friend!" She points to the gray wolf picture.
"These are all beautiful! You're a true artist!" I give her a big hug and swirl her around. I love hearing her little laugh. I can't believe she'll be five soon and beginning kindergarten in September.
"Go brush your teeth now and get ready for your bed. I'll tuck you in when you're ready."
Once she's out of the room, my mom starts talking. "How was work sweetie?" I sigh and slump back onto the couch. "Exhausting, but interesting." I think about the kiss and involuntarily let the smile show on my face. I knew mom would question me about it.
"What's his name?" She asks as she puts her book down, fully intrigued by the idea of me meeting someone.
