"Come on, sis," Charlie said, crumpling the napkin he had used to wipe his mouth. "Let's go."
I nodded, still feeling dazed from the events of the previous night. "But are you sure you’re okay to come? What about your patients?" I asked.
"They can wait."
Despite having enjoyed the delicious pancakes and omelette, my mind was preoccupied with thoughts of what had happened.
As we made our way to Charlie's car, he cast a worried glance my way. "Are you okay, Dahlia? You seem a little out of it."
I tried to smile reassuringly and say, "I'm fine, just trying to make sense of everything."
"What do you think the police want from you?" Charlie asked, his tone concerned.
"I have no idea," I replied, feeling a sense of dread building inside me. "Do you think I've gotten into some kind of trouble?"
"Have you?" Charlie inquired, his gaze searching mine.
"No, definitely not," I replied, shaking my head. "Maybe they want to ask me about what happened to Mr. Green. Maybe they're talking to everyone who witnessed him jump off the building."
"That could be it," Charlie said, nodding thoughtfully. He wrapped his arm around me, offering a comforting squeeze. "Don't worry, we'll get to the bottom of this. The police will help us figure out what happened."
As we drove to the police station, I couldn't help but feel uneasy. Charlie kept asking questions about Kael, trying to piece together what had happened the night before. I told him everything I could remember.
Then we each lost ourselves in our own thoughts. As we pulled into the parking lot, my heart was pounding in my chest. I had no idea why I was here or what was going to happen.
Then Charlie suddenly spoke up again. "By the way, what did Kael look like? Did you get a good look at his face?"
I shook my head. "He was wearing a mask. I never saw his face."
"Dahlia," Charlie said with a serious tone, "I think you should take off his mask the next time he comes to see you."
I was taken aback by this suggestion, not understanding what he meant by next time. "What do you mean, 'next time'?" I asked, my voice shaking.
Charlie gave me a cryptic look. "An Alpha has to have s*x with his mate five times before she can conceive his baby," he said, as if this was information that everyone should know.
"Why do you know so much about this stuff, Charlie?" I finally asked him, my curiosity getting the better of me.
Charlie just shrugged. "I've been reading a lot about this stuff. I think it's fascinating, and I believe you should too."
"Really? Why is that?"
"Well, it's important to understand the world we live in and the different types of creatures that exist. And since an Alpha has come to you, I suggest you start learning about them too. It’ll help you more next time."
The thought of Kael, with his rough and intimidating demeanor, kissing me five times filled me with dread. The idea of carrying his child was even more frightening. My mind was filled with questions as we arrived at the police station.
What was happening to me? Why was I the Alpha's mate? And what did the future hold for me now?
We entered the police station, and I followed Charlie inside, where we were greeted by a uniformed officer at the front desk. The officer on duty looked up as we approached. "Can I help you?" he asked.
"Yes, my name's Dahlia Clarke. This is my older brother, Charlie Clarke. I received a call from an officer and I was asked to come here," I said, trying to keep my voice steady.
The officer nodded and gestured for us to follow him to a private room. As we sat down, I couldn't help but feel a sense of unease.
"Dahlia, take a seat," Charlie said, pointing to a chair. "I'll be right outside if you need me."
As soon as I stepped into the interrogation room, my heart began to race. The sterile white walls and dim lighting felt suffocating, and I longed for the comfort of Charlie's presence by my side.
Seated across from me was an old man, his expression stern and unyielding. The officer introduced him as Mr. Green's father, and I couldn't help but feel a wave of guilt wash over me. I was here to answer questions about the recent tragedy, and the pain of loss was written all over the old man's face.
The officer cleared his throat, and I focused my attention on him.
"Ms. Clarke," the officer began, "this is Mr. Robert Green, Mr. Eric Green’s father, your college professor."
I tried to smile at him, but Robert just gave me a hard look.
"We've been reviewing all the surveillance footage," the officer continued, "and after careful consideration, we've taken you off the suspect list."
I let out a sigh of relief. "Thank you, officer," I said.
As I sat across from Mr. Green's father and the officer, I couldn't shake the feeling of guilt that was weighing heavily on my conscience. I was now aware that Kael's actions towards Mr. Green were driven by a desire to protect me from the harm that Mr. Green intended to inflict upon me. The realization was overwhelming, and I felt the urge to confess what I knew to the two men in front of me.
The officer nodded and continued, "However, we still need to ask you a few questions about what happened. Can you tell us where you were when Mr. Green fell from the building?"
I hesitated for a moment, thinking about what Kael had told me the day before. He had protected me from Mr. Green, but could I reveal that to the officer in front of me?
As I looked into Mr. Green's father's eyes, I could see the deep pain and sadness etched in his expression. I didn't have the heart to add to his grief by revealing the truth about his son's intentions. And as for the officer, I didn't want to jeopardize the case against Mr. Green by admitting any kind of involvement.
So I kept my mouth shut and let the officer do the talking. I knew I had to keep Kael's secrets, no matter how much it weighed on me. But as I left the interrogation room, I couldn't help but feel that my silence would come back to haunt me in the end.
"I was on the first floor," I said softly.
The officer nodded, making a note in his file. "Do you have any information about what might have led to Mr. Green's fall?"
I shook my head, not wanting to reveal anything that might implicate Kael. "I'm sorry, officer. I don't know anything about it."
The officer seemed to sense my discomfort and closed the file. "Alright, Ms. Clarke. That's all for now. We'll be in touch if we need anything else."
I stood up, ready to escape the suffocating atmosphere of the interrogation room, when suddenly Robert Green, Mr. Green's father, stood up and pointed a finger at me.
"You're the one who seduced my son!" he screamed. "You lured him in with your lies and deception."
I took a step back, shocked by his sudden outburst. "That's not true," I protested. "Your son was a monster. He forced his students to do things they didn't want to."
Robert's face turned red with anger. "How dare you speak ill of my son," he spat. "You're just a lying, manipulative b*tch who wants to bring down a good man."
I could hear the anger and hurt in his voice, but I refused to back down. "Your son was not a good man," I replied, standing my ground. "He was a predator who took advantage of his students."
As soon as the words left my mouth, Robert lunged at me, his hand reaching for me.
Just as I thought things couldn't get any worse, the door to the room burst open, and Charlie stormed in, his face contorted with rage. "What's going on here?" he yelled, stepping between Robert and me.
If they weren't in the police station, they would have had a huge fight.
"Get out of my way, you punk!" Robert snarled. "I'm going to teach this little w***e a lesson she'll never forget."
Charlie stood his ground, his eyes flashing with anger. "You lay a hand on her, and I'll break it."
Robert and Charlie were nose-to-nose, their bodies tensed and ready to fight. The tension in the room was palpable, and I felt like I was going to be sick.
The officers in the room rushed over to assist,
As the officers in the room rushed over to separate them, a sudden crack filled the air, and the ceiling started to come down. Robert looked up in shock as a large piece of debris fell right on top of his head.
