~CALLIE'S P.O.V~
Jade and I had walked into the mall with full intent on only getting an outfit for tonight. But Jade decided that my heart was broken. Quite literally. She said, and I quote, 'We will just buy ourselves whatever we want in order to have some glimpse of joy'. Have you ever heard of the term "shop til you drop"? Well, that was Jade's idea of a fun time. I enjoyed it as well, just not to the extent that she does. We made our way through multiple stores until we came to the last one. Which happened to be my favorite store. Victoria's Secret/Pink. I am very much a girly girl when it comes to clothes, even though my damper attitude doesn't seem like it. I enjoy the bras that match my underwear, although nobody sees them but me. I like comfortable sweats and hoodies. And the smell of this store brings me pure joy.
I love scents, even the ones that aren't fruity. Fresh rain happens to be my favorite. When we have a rainstorm, I would sit on the porch cuddled up with a blanket with some hot chocolate and watch as the rain hit the ground. The aroma was so peaceful, and the smell of fresh rain brought joy and peace to my mind. I never knew rain could make your body feel at ease. I started using the rainstorms as my comfort after my parents passed away. Mrs. Avery bought me this sound machine to help me sleep. It has the sounds of rain pouring. It did help a lot. At least some nights it did.
I walked over to the lingerie and started looking at this cute lacy one-piece. I don't buy lingerie for any form of bedroom time. Actually, I don't own any lingerie, but something about today makes me feel free and wild. Without realizing it, I let my guard down, giving Emery a chance to break through.
'Ugh finally, first let me start off by saying that was rude, I have been in this shell of your mind for far too long to be pushed back again.'
'I'm sorry Em, I promise I won't do it again...' I paused, realizing I had just nicknamed her without any consent. I hope she doesn't get upset...
'Umm I am sorry Emery, I didn't even ask if I could nickname you.'
'What's this nickname you speak of, like a pet name?'
'No... No...I am so sorry... never mind.'
'HA, I'm kidding, I LOVE IT! But only if I can also give you a pet name.’
'It's called a nickname, silly, but go on, I'm listening.'
'I will settle for what others call you, Cal, I pet-name you Cal.'
'Now you're just doing it on purpose. But you know what, it perfectly suits me well.'
'I am funny, and you know it!'
I looked back down at the black lacy top. It’s really cute. It would go very nicely with my skin-tight maroon skirt that snugs my waist. It's cold outside but we will be indoors until shifting so I could totally pull this off.
'That's the one.' Em says in my mind.
I grabbed it, heading to the counter where Jade was checking out with a bag full of things.
"Geez J, buy the entire store collection?" I said sarcastically.
"I couldn't choose and tonight so many are coming. All the other packs, plus their friends from other packs that do not attend our school. Then all the ones who've graduated but don't have a mate yet will be there." She trails off as if she was reminded of something.
"I'm sorry Callie, I know it's selfish of me to want to search for my mate, especially after your mate just..." She pauses, looking for the right words. But I talked before she talked anymore. The thought of my mate hurts.
"Jade... you have nothing to be sorry for, you deserve happiness. You deserve to find your mate. Just because mine is a d**k doesn't mean yours will be. Please don't hold back tonight because of me. I promise I will be okay."
My wolf let out a low growl in my head as I said that about her mate. She says she was going through my memories, but I know she felt the pain too because I did, and we are one with the soul. Plus, now that I think about it, I heard a soft whimper in my head, but I was so fixated on my chest hurting that I didn't think twice about it.
'Mate sucks, we can do better, we are destined for better.'
'Em, he rejected us. He used our full name. The Moon Goddess took away our second-chance mates centuries ago. We have no other chance for true happiness.'
'I understand, but in order for our bond to break, we have to accept his rejection, so, therefore, he will still feel the mate bond pull. Since it has been hours now, I bet all he can think of is us, just as we have been thinking of him.'
I totally forgot that was a huge lesson about mates in school. How could I forget? If your mate rejects you, the counter-mate has to accept the rejection so the bond will be severed forever. I forgot all about it, mostly because you hardly hear of mates rejecting their other half anymore. At least not after the Moon Goddess took away her gift to us of having a second chance. Wolves hold onto their mates and cherish them. Unfortunately, that was not what our mate had in mind. Quite the opposite actually. My wolf whimpers at my memory of being rejected.
'We must accept the rejection.' Emery says, taking me off guard.
'You have been whimpering since the rejection. Why, all of a sudden, a change of heart?'
'I can mourn the loss of my fated mate, but as I said, we are destined for much better.' She says, leaving the conversation without room for questions.
After Jade and I pay for our items, we decide to go have lunch since it is now half past 12. We ordered Chick-fil-A and then took a seat in the courtyard at the mall.
"Holy smokes, it's afternoon!" Jade half screamed; half whispered.
"Have you met your wolf yet? What's her name?" She quickly asked, following her first question.
I knew the subject would pop up sooner rather than later.
"Yes, she showed up not too long ago. Her name is Emery." I replied, only half fibbing, it's true it wasn't too long ago.
"Molly is so excited about meeting her! She just knows they'll be best of friends like us."
Molly, Jade's wolf, is extremely protective over me, even more so than Jade in a way. Molly is big for a she-wolf because of her Beta bloodline. She is a red/brown wolf with the same-colored eyes as Jade, Emerald green. Werewolves have the exact same color of eyes as their human counterparts. Unless they no longer have humanity, then their eyes are as black as coal. Which means my wolf's eyes will be a deep blue. This is a known fact.
"We are so excited about meeting her tonight!" Jade says excitedly.
That's right. Jade and I planned on escaping the party right before midnight so I could shift for the first time and let Emery out to run through the forest.
"Emery is prancing in my head, excited to meet you both in person and not through my eyes, she is also excited to feel the rush of air on her fur." I finish my statement just before we hear:
"ORDER FOR CALLIE, ORDER FOR JADE" The worker announced that our food was ready. We walk over and grab our food. We sat at the table once again scarfing down the food. Once we are done eating, we head to the car to leave the mall. As I am walking to the car, I get this uneasy feeling once again. It feels as if I am being watched. I looked around to see if I could see anybody but shook off the thought since nobody was there. We got in Bug, buckled up, and got ready to leave. If you’re wondering who bug is, I'll elaborate. Jade literally named her car bug short for slug-bug.
We arrived at the pack house fairly quickly. Once we parked, we both got out of the car and headed straight up to the 3rd floor.
The pack house has the ground floor where the halls have rooms upon rooms for those who wish to live there. It also has a rec room, a movie room, and a ballroom which is used to host meetings, and also parties such as ceremonies and then the annual masquerade ball. It is always held once a year, always held in a different pack across the United States. Only the non-mated wolves over 18 were allowed to attend them. They were held specifically to help wolves across the world find their mate.
The upper floor plan of the pack house, however, is for high-ranked members. The 4th floor is for the Alpha and his family; the 3rd floor is for the Beta and his family and, of course, me; the 2nd floor is for the Gamma and his family. It has been vacant since the death of my parents. Alpha James never replaced him in his ranking. I'm not sure if it was out of respect for my late father or if he just didn't want to.
I haven't been to the 2nd floor since the night of the attack. I've stared at the elevator button many times wishing I had the courage to face it head on. But it has been over 2 years and my heart still hasn't managed to push it. No one is allowed to enter the elevator unless invited to do so. The upper floors are restricted areas. I know that once the new Alpha takes his position, then his Gamma will be able to take the 2nd floor, so I have to muster up the courage before the crowning of the new Alpha, which was planned to take place shortly after his 20th birthday, which was in 3 weeks' time. Seeing how my parents only had me and I am a female, my father's position will be given to another family, one of which the future Alpha has yet to decide on. The Gamma, however, is chosen by the Luna since they share a bond that only the Luna and Gamma can share. It is similar to a mate bond, just without the mating part. You are bonded for life. The only way a Luna and Gamma's bond can be broken is if one were to die. Therefore, the Gamma is not chosen lightly by the Alpha or Luna. Seeing how Alpha Gunner has yet to find his Luna, I still have time.
I went to push the 3rd-floor button only to accidentally press 2. My heart began beating hard in my chest. I quickly pressed 3 but it was too late. The elevator starts to go up, stopping on the second floor, and the doors open. I stood in the doorway staring at the empty hall. The maids still clean up here in order to keep dust bunnies away and keep the floor in pristine condition.
Looking at the familiar hallway, I felt as if a ton of bricks were lying on my chest. I could see my parents' bedroom door as the elevator doors closed. Jade took my hand and squeezed it, reassuring me that she was there with me. This time I didn't cry. The elevator proceeded to go up once again, opening up, revealing the 3rd floor. We got off and began to head to our own rooms. Jade's room is across the hall from mine.
"Hey J, I am worn out and I think I will take a nap since it's so early in the day so I can be refreshed and ready for tonight." I wasn't lying, being rejected took a lot out of me on top of shopping half the day. I was pretty exhausted.
"Okay but be sure you're up with plenty of time to get ready! We have to look our absolute best because 1- we need to make your mate regret ever losing this dime." She says as she moves her hands in front of my body "And 2-In case I get lucky and find my mate. Hell, even if I don't find my mate, I need to look good, I might possibly just get lucky and score tonight." Jade says with a laugh.
Jade was not a virgin like me, she also wasn't a w***e, she had only been with one guy, her boyfriend of 2 years, until a month before Jade's 16th birthday, he turned 16 and found his fated mate and left her on the spot. That was a heartbreak I knew nothing of, but I was still there for her the entire time like she was for me after I lost my family. I turned to her for a shoulder to cry on, just like she turned to me. Looks like an ever-revolving doorway because I am back to needing her shoulder once again. We spent all night watching sad movies and eating ice cream while she cried. She knew the possibility of them not being mates was high, but she gave herself to him anyway. I guess love makes you do crazy things.
We both part ways and go to our own rooms. I lay down in my big queen bed thinking about the second floor and how much I wanted to see it again. After a while of staring at the ceiling, I am consumed by sleep.
