Chapter 9“You look a little better than the last time I saw you.” Pat managed a small smile. He was pale, which was what Brock had expected, but at least he was alive, much to his relief. Despite what the surgeon, and then the nurse a few minutes ago had told him, he hadn’t been ready to believe it until he saw Pat in person. “Mr. McKenzie is doing well, so far,” the nurse told him. “He can be thankful he hasn’t experienced unanticipated breathing problems that would have required a ventilator, but then he shouldn’t have, since he has the chest tube.” Brock nodded, gently squeezing Pat’s hand. “If you’re up to it, you get to listen while I fill you in on what happened after you were shot.” “Please. It’ll take my mind off this.” He nodded toward the monitoring machines. “And thank you f
