Chapter Two

1515 Words
Sheldon. My phone is busy calling and in as much as I try to assume it the caller isn't giving up. "Hun wake up, your phone." Carol shakes me to wake up. I groan in frustration and wake up. "Can't a man sleep peacefully?" I check the clock, it's three in the morning. I place the phone on my ear without checking the caller ID. "What?" "Dr. Welusa you have an emergency." When I hear the sound of the voice I roll my eyes and sit up. Carol is sleeping in a seductive manner with just my T-shirt which is barely covering her ass. She does know how to tempt me. My eyes scan her body for a minute before I turn back my concentration to the person on the other end of the call. "Matt this is not the right time for you to prank call me I'm exhausted and sleepy," I tell him and he laughs. Seriously? Matt is my best friend, we've been friends for long, since we started working in the same hospital we kind of just clicked and he's literally the only friend I have that doesn't exhaust my money, apart from the fact that he loves making fun of me, and he's the only one that gets away with it. Carol moves her hand inside my shirt and I almost lose it. "As much as I would like to prank you, this is really an emergency." "Whatever men, goodnight." He always does that whenever he's on shift and I'm not just to make sure I don't get enough sleep. I want to hang up when he stops me. "I'm serious, your patient just woke up." "Which patient I have a lot of them, look you're amazing Matthew and I love you as a friend but I have a girl to attend to," I tell him looking at Carol who smiles. "Wait, you got a girl I don't know about?" I mentally slap myself when he asks that. Now he won't let me sleep until I tell him everything. "It's Carol." "Whoah." "Can I sleep now?" I'm going to hang up on him if he keeps talking. "I wish I'd let you do that but I can't man, she's your patient and you're the only one that can deal with her." She, I only have one lady patient who is in a coma. Olive. "Who is that?" I ask him as I get out of bed ignoring Carol who looks bored at that. "That governor's daughter the one with twin siblings." She's the one. My heart is racing. She's awake! "Hope it's not a prank because I swear if it is I'll make sure you lose your job." I threaten him and I can hear him laugh. Jerk. "She has been in a coma for three months I wouldn't lie to you man." The reason I doubt him it's because he's the one giving me the call. "Why hasn't my nurse called me instead?" If it were true the nurse assigned to take care of her overnight would have been the one to call me, not Matt. "Coz your work phone is off and no one has your personal number." He is right, when I got to the house it was out of charge and I was planning to charge it but I was distracted by Carol. "Fine, I'll be there in a few, thanks, man." "I love you too." "Jerk." He bursts a burst of laughter as I hang up the call. I don't know why he's always happy with life, at times I wonder how he got to be a neurosurgeon. He is too easy for that. But then again when he gets serious with work, he does his best to save a life, in his five years of performing surgery he only lost one patient, I guess that's why many hospitals want him as their personal neurosurgeon. I quickly put on a pair of trousers and a T-shirt and pick my car keys from the side table. "An emergency?" Carol asks as I put on my shoes. "Yea." "That's what I'm talking about, it's always been about your work." Seriously? Is she even being serious right now? "I'm a doctor just in case you forgot, it's part of my work, more so this is the governor's daughter I better be there before I lose my job." She just rolls her eyes and lays back on the bed. "So we are good?" I don't know what she means by that but I nod my head. "Like good good as in we are back together?" She's trying to make me lose my job. "No Carol I told you I need some time, look you can leave in the morning I'll give you a call when I'm free," I tell her as I walk away. "F*ck you!" She yells as I walk away shaking my head. Just because we had s*x doesn't mean we are good, she's always a drama queen. ****** "She was having seizures when she woke up, they were too much I had to inject her with a sedative." The nurse tells me as I quickly walk to her room putting on my lab coat. "Thank you so much, Beryl." I walk in and she's sleeping calmly with a smile on her lips. She looks like a baby. She's been in a coma for three months and she manages to smile in her sleep. I go through her file and check her temperature, breathing intervals and blood pressure everything is okay. She slightly opens her eyes and shuts them again. "Beryl, how long did you induce the sedative? Because she's waking up." "What? Like five minutes ago, she's supposed to be asleep." She opens her eyes again and doesn't shut them this time. She scans the room and her eyes land on me, she smiles. My heart skips a beat, she just woke up from a coma and the first thing she does is smile at me, this is crazy. Or maybe I'm the crazy one. "Miss Olive Ndumi how are you feeling?" I ask her as I feel her forehead with the back of my palm. I place the stethoscope on her chest to check her heartbeat. It's fast. I guess it's the sedatives but something is not okay. "Tha...t's ...not..my..name." She says as she struggles to bring out her speech. "I'm sorry but It's the name I have on your file." Unless she is having memory loss, this is her name and everyone knows that. "Noo." She yells, it almost startles me and before I can say another word I watch as her chest rises and falls, her hands start shaking and her entire body is shaking vigorously, she's having seizures. "Nurse hold her down!" I order her as I try to check what is going on. Just then I see foam come from her mouth. An epileptic attack. How didn't I know this? "Beryl did you know she has epilepsy?" I ask her and she shakes her head as she tries to hold her down. I asked her family if she had any health complications and they said she was perfectly healthy, why would they lie? Her mother most specifically told me she is perfectly healthy. "Just let her go Beryl." She lets her go and moves back sweating. I watch as her muscles contract in spasms, causing uncontrollable jerks and twitches. The foam in her mouth is turning red. Shit! She bit her tongue. "Doctor do something," Beryl screams as the door is opened and two more nurses walk in. "It's an epileptic attack Beryl there's basically nothing I can do, we should just let her calm down." After about two minutes she's calming down. Once the jerking has stopped I roll her onto her side and let out a breath I was holding. She's breathing normally now, one of the nurses wipes off the foam as she opens her eyes. "Miss.." I can't call her by her name, I don't want a repeat of what just happened. "Ahem, Miss how are you feeling?" She smiles again and tries to turn to lie on her back. The nurses help her. "You're handsome." She says as she looks at me. I mentally blush. How does she manage to say that when she almost died not long ago. "Thank you, how are you feeling?" "Tired and a little headache." She says as she moves her hand to her head and massages her temple. "It's the sedatives in your system, anything else?" "My tongue." "Yea, you bit it I'll have the nurse check that, I want to know if there are any more pains you feel." I ask her and she shakes her head. "I'll be better when I see you smile." I don't usually smile but when she says that I find myself smiling. She's something else. "Which family member should we call?" "My sister." She whispers the last words as she sinks into sleep, still with a smile. She has a beautiful smile. ######
