Meeting of a lifetime

Briar As we entered the main house, I got this tingly feeling all over. I could also hear a soothing voice in my head. One I had heard many times. I swear it said ‘mate’ but what the heck does that mean? Emerson saw me stop and looked concerned. “Hey, you okay?” she asked tilting her head to the side like she was trying to read my mind. “It was nothing.” There was no way she would understand my brain. Hell, I barely did myself. “Okay, well we will seat you with Sofiawill answer everything we can okay.” Emerson took my hand and I instantly felt calmer. “Sure thing.” I replied as I squeezed her hand. We walked into the hall and it was massive. So beautiful. Dark wood walls with large beams stretched across. Large chandeliers hung throughout. There was a large seal at the front of the room and a long rectangular table. Emerson’s mom came up to greet us. She had been so hospitable since I arrived. I saw where Emerson got her kind heart from. Then Suddenly, there was commotion. It was like a freight train was headed right for me. My heartbeat quickened. People started to move out of the way. Then I saw him, this larger-than-life man. His light brown skin and piercing hazel eyes hungrily took me in. He raced towards me as I heard him utter the words. “MATE!” I instantly moved out of his way. Who was he speaking of? What the hell was he talking about? Was he looking directly at me? I already saw glowing eyes in the forest, saw cars tossed like in a tornado, ran for my life, and now I was getting chased down by an albeit very attractive but rampaging man. What is with this town? I screamed as he tried to grab me. I scurried behind Ms. Martha. Now there was a crowd around us. This man never stopped trying to get to me. I looked in his eyes as I saw them darken. I swear I heard a whimper? Does no one else hear this? I think that the doctor must have slipped something on me. I feel like I am in an alternate universe. Emerson’s dad spoke to him. Yes, the massive god was still trying to reach me. He was being held back from that guy I saw speaking with Emerson the other night, and a few other guys. He was very determined. Mrs. Black stood in front of me. She made me look at her as she told me everything was alright and to calm down. I frowned thinking…no, everything is not alright. Mr. McHandsome is trying to grab me for who knows what reason. Why was everyone else so calm and almost happy? “Sweetheart, can you take the men to your office and women, go to mine. So we can get this all squared away.” Mrs. Black announced to the growing crowd. Whispers were all around me. I even saw Willow and her girls giving me dirty looks. Seriously! What have I done to them now? I exhaled and gripped on the Emerson’s hand. She smiled at me like she was excited. “Just wait. We’ll explain everything right now.” She pulled me along as I saw Mr. McHandsome pulled in the other direction. His eyes looked so sad and a part of me never wanted to see that look on him. It was weird that I kind of missed him the second he turned the corner and left my sight. We made it to her second floor office. It was a beautiful light and airy room. The walls were a faint cream color. There were two sets of French doors on either side of a cream ornate fireplace. Sheers hung on both sides. In her office was a white wooden desk with a soft high back chair in gray. Two chairs sat across from them. Across the room was a sitting area. A large gray sofa with two arm chairs and a glass table in the middle. We quickly went to sit on the couch. Emerson and Ms. Martha sat on either side of me as Mrs. Black sat in one of the side chairs. As soon as I opened my mouth, there was a knock at the door, and in came someone bringing tea and an assortment of meats and cheeses. I nervously expected it to be Mr. Mc-Handsome back for another round. I would be lying if a part of me didn’t want to see him again. I swear this town has made me as crazy as they all are. The anticipation in my eyes soon dulled. I caught Mrs. Black give a gentle smile. I think she saw my reaction. I swear this town made no sense. I made no sense while I was in this town. We were all served tea as I nodded a thank you to the woman. She smiled to me with a simple bow and left the room. I took a deep breath and took a sip of my tea. It was a peppermint tea. I remember that smell. It was the flavor my mom used to drink. I sat with my eyes closed enjoying the moment that once again I was remembering something from my past. “Okay, so who wants to bring me up to speed? What is going on here? Why do so many weird things happen around me? But most of all, who was that guy? Why did he call me a mate? You saw it too, right Em?” I asked the only friend I really felt like I had at that moment. Everyone else in the room was like a mother figure. It wasn’t the same. “You are right. Things have been weird. We are really just as surprised as you. But one thing we do know is that there is something different about you.” She paused as if that gave me any clarity on the matter. It did not. “Have you ever noticed how you can hear things that others can’t? How you can see farther or don’t need glasses to see very clearly at night? Like what you saw and heard in the woods before any of us did?” “Well, yeah, but it’s nothing out of the ordinary. Or so I thought. But what does that have to do with anything going on here?” “Let me try dear,” Ms. Martha began as she took my hand. “Sweetheart, you are a very special person. I knew it the first moment you walked into my lodge. I just had no idea how special. What I am trying to say is…you are a wolf. A werewolf to be exact.” You could hear a pin drop in the room. I furrowed my brows to make sure I heard her correctly. I scanned the room to see if all of their faces were the same. I let out a loud laugh as I grabbed my stomach from the words I had just heard. “Oh, okay, I am a werewolf. I transform from a human. I howl at the moon and I am a part of a pack of wolves that move around at night, right? ..and let me guess…that means my parents were wolves. Right?” “Pretty much. Well, except no roaming around. Your pack is usually in one place.” Emerson spoke as she rubbed her hands on the front of her jeans. “Wait…you can’t be serious?” “We all are. Everyone in this room.” Mrs. Black spoke. I looked around as they all nodded. “I really thought I had finally found a decent group of people that I really liked and liked me back. Yet here I am in some town where everyone is a Werewolf.” I did air quotes around the word werewolf. “Have you not noticed that if you are injured, you heal faster than others? Or that you can hear things no one can. Or you smell things from such a distance. These are all your enhanced wolf senses.” Ms. Martha spoke as looked up at me as I paced. I could feel my breath hitching as I tried to relax but it wasn’t working. A full-on panic attack was on the way. Ms. Martha zoned out for a second and Emerson nodded her head. “What was that? What are you doing? Are you speaking about me with some kind of code?” I was now getting pissed off. I am in the room and they deliberately speak around me? “I am sorry, we were mind linking. It is where we can talk to each other mentally to anyone a part of this pack. I was saying that you should calm down. You get worked up and then the headaches come and you black out. I was saying I think that may be some of your special abilities but since you were never properly trained on how to use them…” Ms. Martha paused. “I pass out.” I whisper. That made sense. What was I saying. This all still sounded crazy and I was falling for it. I needed to pack my bag and get on the road to the next town. “Exactly.” Emerson added. “You are just like us. A werewolf who has all these powers inside of you. Have you ever noticed that your eyes change colors? The night of the bon fire. When you saw something in the woods…your eyes glowed a golden color. Have you ever noticed that before?” “No, never? You mean to tell me you all are wolves and so am I and that guy out there…the one that charged at me. He is a wolf also?” “That is my son, Ronan. He seems to feel you are his mate.” Mrs. Black spoke next. “MATE! Wait a minute. I just got here and now I am being married off to the first hot guy that claims me.” I noticed Emerson smiled when I called him hot. “The Moon Goddess Selene makes a perfect mate for every wolf. It is the person that soothes our soul. That makes us happy. That can calm our grief. It is a true blessing to find your mate. You get your wolf on your eighteenth birthday. It will be like a voice in your head. They are a part of you. They help you, protect you and give you strength. Then one day when you are lucky you get a mate. You know instantly, because your wolf will start acting crazy and alert you your mate is near.” “So, your son Ronan…his wolf told him I was his mate? So why did I not feel anything?” “When is your birthday?” Asked Ms. Martha. “In a couple of days. But I will be twenty.” “Usually, when you turn eighteen, your wolf awakens, and then you will know. But sometimes it is delayed for reasons we don’t know.” She says as I collapse into the other arm chair. It all makes sense but it all seems absolutely crazy. I am supposedly a wolf and I have a mate and I should have some special powers. All in a day’s work. I tell you. When I go, I surely go big. I know what I need to do and it sounds hell a crazy but it seems to relax me to say this out loud. “Can I speak with him…please.”
