Alpha Ronan
“Alpha Ronan, your father has been trying to reach you. He needs to speak with you, sir.” One of my warriors had found me. I blocked all communication and went for a run.
I trained my men to be better than the best at all times. I tested them often on tracking. They rarely found me. Growing up with this power as the strongest Alpha to date was exhausting most of the time. No one could handle me in battle. I was ruthless. A natural born killing machine. That is why our pack was the largest, strongest, and safest. We had just over two thousand in our pack. No one without a death wish challenged us.
My father was once again trying to convince me to have another ball to welcome neighboring packs so that I might find my mate. I had traveled all around the world and back. No mate. It was obvious that the Moon Goddess did not have anyone for me. Maybe she was already dead. It was rare to get a second chance, mate. So, I slept with any she-wolf of my choosing. It helped keep my power under control. Or rather keep Titus more settled.
Titus is my wolf. He is a massive jet-black wolf with eyes the color of the moon. He was even more of a d**k than I was. More ruthless than any wolf period.
“Thanks, Marlon. Your tracking skills are getting better. Keep it up. I need someone like you as a top warrior.” I replied as I headed through the woods.
“Yes, Alpha!” Marlon replied. He was finishing high school, but I could see he had potential. He may not be the best fighter, but I could train him on searching.
My own warriors could never find me in such time. My father knew exactly who to send. As I ran at top speed, Titus nudged me wanting to get out.
“Not now, Titus, father is calling us. I promise to give you a good run tonight.”
‘Sure, you have been promising me this for days now asshole.’ Titus grunted.
“Some wolf is in a cranky mood.” I laughed as he blocked me from speaking to him.
The woods were our peace. It always calmed me. As wolves, we were one with nature.
Our pack was located in northern California. The Black River Pack had the largest land mass. We had the best fighters who protected our borders. We also used our allies to the benefit of both parties. Within our land right at the northern borders we had a vampire pack, and at our eastern border was a witch colony. There were many different species beyond what the humans saw in movies. We worked closely with our allies and had alliances banning the killing of each other. If one actually occurred, there was a royal court who took care of those cases, and they always ended in death.
In the center of our pack was our village that held several cottages for families. Also, we had our own school for all of the children in the pack. It was a school of super naturals that taught the history of all the groups. In order to respect each other you had to know the history of them. Good or bad, so that history did not repeat itself. There were also some humans that attended the school. Most knew of our existence and kept our secrets. We kept the human town safe in return.
“Hey man, let me guess…hiding out and calling it, tracking training as usual?” Colton, my best friend and future Beta joined me as I entered the pack house.
“Yep, I needed it bad. Titus is frustrated. This damn event is coming up, and my father won’t let up. I think I may go visit the New Moon Pack.” I could feel Colton side-eye me.
“Oh really, can’t keep away from Auri, huh?” he teased as I exhaled.
Auri was a future Alpha herself. We met at Alpha training as kids, and we quickly became the best of friends. We also enjoyed a lot of no strings attached s*x on occasion. We were both hopeful for mates but strong enough to run them on our own. Their pack was just south of ours. With their land with beachfront views as well, my wolf always loved a run on their land by the water.
“Well, if I recall, you seemed to find yourself with some new she-wolf every time I visit.” I smirk towards Colton.
“Can’t deny I have always been a fan of your trips in the past.” Colton replied. I noticed there was something off about him.
“Hey, you good man? Seems like something is on your mind a lot lately? You know you can talk to me about anything, right?” I stopped him in the hallway so we could look face to face. I wanted him to know before anything he was my best friend. We were close in height. He looked me in the eyes and nodded in appreciation.
“Yeah, it’s…. something is up with my wolf, too. He won’t tell me a damn thing, and it’s frustrating as hell.” He grabs at his hair as his looks like he is about to pull his hair from the root.
“Well, hopefully, these wolves of ours will learn how to communicate with us.” I say loud enough for my wolf to know I am talking about him. I feel him turn his head with indifference and block me once again.
We entered the main staircase headed up to the second floor. My father’s office was at the end of the hall. My office was on the opposite end facing the garden and the labyrinth.
There was a ball coming up no matter my complaints. My father had been demanding everyone attend so that I could find my mate. I was now twenty-five years old, and I may have been young, but most Alphas took over at eighteen. I was technically past my prime. I made it a point to attend Alpha training school and extra training with the royal guard. If I could not find my mate, then I at least wanted to release all of my frustrations on others. It was the only way I could keep Titus under control. I also took my lack of a mate out on as many women as I could bed. I can’t complain about how I spent my time. I just prayed to the moon goddess that there was still a mate out there for me. Some beautiful woman who could calm my wolf and help make our pack even stronger. If that was even possible.
We made it up the stairs, and his warriors on duty began to mind-link my father of our arrival. As we made it to the door, I heard him call us for entry.
“Son, Colton, thank you for finally appearing. I swear your disappearing skills give our trackers the most work.”
“Alpha Malcolm.” Colton spoke as he bowed to my father. My dad’s Alpha aura was always intense but had less effect on me.
“Yes dad, the only way to keep them on their toes.” I joked.
I may have the most massive wolf in the area, but I knew how to hide my scent. Standing at six feet six inches and my broad muscular frame, you would think it was easy to find me. It was part of our training. To make sure they never saw you coming and you could hide in plain sight. Our training was intense. We made it a point to maintain our numbers with the least number of casualties. It was an honor to be a part of the Black River Pack.
“So, your mother has set up the ball for next week. We have confirmations from all the local packs and even a few abroad. It will be quite an event.” My father closed a folder sitting on his desk. “I need to know that you will be on your best behavior. That you will be hospitable and not challenge every future Alpha to a fight. This event means a lot to your mother and to me. The sooner you find your mate, the sooner your mother and I can finally take some time off."
“Dad, I run the pack already. You have handed over all the work. I run the finances. I have the best security team that has updated all files and safety at our borders. I can handle this. I have my beta here, and I also have my gamma and delta. We are prepared.”
“Yes, you are almost there. Son, there is something to be said about the peace that helps to balance you when you find your Luna. Your mate. She will calm your beast and also give you strength you never imagined. I could not step away knowing that you are still such a loose cannon.”
I exhaled. I knew he was right. But how the hell could I prove I could run the pack if he never let go completely.
“I will be on my best behavior, father.”
“Future Beta Colton, I am expecting you to have your future Alpha’s back. Like you have your entire life.”
“Yes, Alpha Malcolm. I will get it done, sir. You can count on me.” He bows as we head from his office. Colton has had my back my entire life. We were raised together as pups. I knew above anyone I could always count on him. He was loyal to our pack and the best person I knew. He was also the only person who could talk sense into me when my rage took over.
“We have time before lunch. How about we let our wolves out and go for a run?” I could feel Titus getting excited. He was an asshole, but he was my wolf. He deserved to stretch and get some mileage all through the forest as well.
“Sounds like a plan! Diesel could go for a run.” Colton replied as we headed towards the woods outside the pack house.
We ran into Lee and Parrish. They were two of our other friends, and I planned on having them as my Gamma and Delta when I was handed full power. Lee had already found his mate. She was a part of a neighboring pack. They had just recently met. They were all over each other, and I could not wait to find the person that gave me that bond. Colton, Parrish, and I were usually together when I traveled. We always would enjoy the comfort of a warm bed with whatever she-wolf we picked for the night.
We all quickly undressed at the woods edge. Out of the view of the unmated she-wolves in our pack. They were always lurking, trying to get our attention. I tried my best to steer clear of my own pack. I had heard too many horror stories of what a Luna had to deal with within her own pack. I wanted my mate to feel nothing but at home here. Yes, there had been a few women in my pack. I made it more recently a rule to only sleep with women, not in my pack. I felt it was easier that way. Especially with my wolf acting different. I knew something was coming. Something life changing.
