Everyone wanted to drive with us to the airport but my mother suddenly had a court-case in about an hour she had to prep for, my father got an emergency call from his Software company about some technology-related problem and Brian had a sudden, camping trip to go to with his friends. It’s almost as if something had conveniently come up to stop them from coming along with us to the airport.
Outside the house, by Katrina’s car, I turn to say my goodbye to my family as they hurdled close. “Well, I guess this is goodbye for now,” I mumble and hug my mum first, then my dad, whom mum had to pull back forcefully before he decided to release me.
Chuckling, I pull my little brother closer and try not to fall apart at the thought of leaving for who knows how long. I don’t know how life will turn out from now on, but I hope I’d never have to give them up. Brian surprises me when he wraps his arms around me in return and squeezes softly.
Yesterday, he acted like he didn’t care if I stayed or left and I’d tried not to be hurt by that, the both of us were never that particularly close growing up due to our different interests. Heck, we mostly ignored each other unless we had something to say to one another. “I’ll miss you a lot sis.”
Pulling back, I ruffle his hair with a smile. “I’ll miss you too.”
“Come on Tatty, we have to get going,” Katrina says, pulling on my arm before waving goodbye to my family as she slips into the driver's side of the rented ford. Quickly rounding the car, I slip into the passenger side and at the last minute turn in my seat to see them wave goodbye as they watch us drive away.
Both spent most of the trip dwelling on our thoughts before I decided to ask. “Was the reason why everyone couldn’t come your doing?”
“Yeah.” She replies.
I frown, unsatisfied with her response. “Why?”
“For one thing, it will be hard to explain why a private jet is picking us up.”
“Uhmm,” I frown, even more, j little confused. “Why is a private jet picking us up?”
“After what happened yesterday, we’re ruling out being in open or public places. There have been more sightings of vampires lingering around and we don’t want a situation where people get hurt while we’re all trying to get away. Some vampires are not susceptible to sunlight for limited hours now that they’re capturing more changelings and feeding off their blood, so we can’t take any chances. Besides, there’s also the fact that we need to be teleported to our realm before going to school. We’re going to meet your other family.”
I sit upright and stare at her in alarm. “You didn’t tell me that!”
“What do you think I meant when I said I needed to get you to our realm?”
“I don’t know, I wasn’t thinking about that!” I snap in frustration. “I was too busy trying not to fall apart.”
“Look, I know this sounds nerve-wracking but-”
“What I’m feeling right now has gone beyond nerve-wracking Katrina.” I rest my forehead on the window as I released a sigh of agitation. “s**t, this is too much.”
“Sooner or later, you would have had to meet them.”
“I know that, I just-” I try to find the words to express all the different emotions I’m feeling but my mind comes up blank, letting out a grunt of frustration I finally say. “Everything is just going too fast.”
“I know, to get your mind off things why don’t you ask me some questions to distract yourself?” She suggested, and after a minute or two, I comply.
“Where are the others that arrived last night to help, and who the hell were they?”
“They’re changelings, well all except Gavin and Kimmy. She’s a fairy.”
“Katrina, I didn’t ask what, I asked who and where are they?”
Rolling her eyes, she responds with a sigh. “They’re waiting for us at a private airport and they’re my friends. All faeries are divided into three different species because of their race. There’s the Seelie, Unseelie, and then there’s the Neutral. Gavin is Pyromancer, which is a different kind of witch, so he can’t be classified under the Fae’s. But Candy is a Siren so she’s a Seelie. Kimmy is Seelie as well, and Troy is an Elven fae, he’s Neutral.”
“What do Seelie, Unseelie, and Neutral mean exactly?”
“These terms are used to categorize each specie of the Fae’s by their race, differentiating those who are evil and have evil intension towards humans or fae, to those who are good or indifferent, never standing on a side. For the Seelie’s they are benevolent creatures which mankind and generous. They do not like war, and neither do they like to participate in one, but do not underestimate some of the Seelie race. Despite how kind and generous they are, they can get l when they’re attacked or hurt. The Unseelie’s are those you should fear because they’re malevolent, they always have a desire to cause harm to anyone whether it’s humans, fae, or any other otherworldly creature. The Neutral’s are fae’s who you should be cautious of because they’re neither good nor bad, they’re unpredictable basically, which instils caution in a lot of creatures. They like balance so when something completely disrupts it they automatically become wary and hostile. Like humans do when they’re forced to face unpredictable things out of their control.”
“What about me,” I ask. “What am I categorized under?”
Biting her lower lip, her hand tightens even more on the stirring wheel and I frown in worry. “Uhmm, the thing is, you aren’t fae so… you can’t be categorized like regular fae’s.”
“What do you mean-” Before I could even finish the car sharply swivels to the right and I let out a scream of fright as I turn to see a truck whizz past us at high speed, the large vehicle came dangerously close to crashing into us but it quickly swivelled in the other direction to avoid a collision and drove off.
“Oh, my f**k!” Katrina screams, bringing the car to a sudden halt.
We both breathe out in pants and I swallow dryly as my heart races at an accelerated pace. “Are you okay?” She turns to me and I nod shakily, unable to find my voice.
