Chapter 27 Evan backed out of the crowded common room, feeling like he’d been saying goodbye for at least an hour. The threadbare brown couches and chairs were covered with people in various states of intoxication and relief after the last finals of the fall semester. Evan knew a little more than half of them. The other half, friends and a more solid support network than he’d ever had back home, made him surprisingly sad to think about leaving for good in a few more months. The flat white walls had a few more dings and scrapes than when he’d moved in. The even flatter gray carpet would surely be replaced before another year passed. Some stains never washed out. Still, this dorm and the university and St. Louis itself made up the only real home Evan had now. Hurricane Ed hadn’t bothered
