Learning the Truth

“Wake up...”
“Onyx?’ My eyes shot open. “Onyx!”
A young man’s pinched face peered down at me. His dark eyes didn’t seem to match his face. These eyes had aged beyond their years. Doctor Applesteine?
“Whoa...” I gasped, scooting further up the bed. “What are you doing?”
“Welcome back, Miss Shade,” he said with a thin-lipped smile. His thick accent rolled off his tongue. “Sleep well?”
“Fine, I guess,” I replied bluntly. “Why were you so close?”
He backed away, his eyes trained on me. I couldn’t understand why they felt so wrong on his face. “You were under for quite some time. I was checking your vitals... Since you’re a practising veterinary nurse, you should know what that means. Tak?”
“I know how to check vitals on a patient.” I exhal
