Maya Stuart:
A few weeks later...
I quickly ran towards the bathroom and crouched down in front of the toilet, soon I started to vomit.
I've been feeling this way for a few weeks now, ever since that day in the park with Lyan. It seems like every day these symptoms get worse.
She left the room and I saw the maid who came to clean my apartment, she looked at me and smiled.
— The first few months are the worst. — she says.
— First months? — I ask, confused.
— Yes, you are not pregnant? — she asks.
Pregnant?
Me pregnant?
— No. — I speak on automatic. — I don't think so.
I can't be pregnant, if that's true, the father would be Maycon.
Damn it!
— Has your body changed? — she asks. — like, are you finding your breasts bigger, more sensitive, your period is late, and you feel more tired lately?
— Well, yes. — I answer. — but my breasts always get bigger around my period.
— But are you menstruating? — question.
In silence, I do the math of my period, f**k, I was late.
— I'm five days late... — I say scared. — it should be normal to be a little late.
I didn't want to believe in the hypothesis that I was pregnant.
— I think it's better to take the test to clear your doubts. — she says. — I've finished everything I had to do, now I need to go to the other apartments. He takes care of himself. Good luck.
She soon leaves and leaves me there full of doubts.
— Should I take this test? — I ask myself. — if that will make me calm, it's better to do it at once.
I take my cell phone and call Lyan, he answers me on the third call.
— Hi Maya, is there a problem? — he asks, worried.
— More or less. — I talk. — are you busy?
— No, why?
— Can you do me a little favor? — I ask.
— I do, what do you want me to do? — question.
— I want you to buy two pregnancy tests and bring them to me in my apartment. — I ask. — Please, when you arrive I'll explain.
— Okay, I'll be there in a few minutes. — talks and hangs up.
I leave the cell phone on the bed and run back to the bathroom, throw up everything and almost spill my guts.
I flushed and left the bathroom, I headed towards the kitchen where I grabbed a glass of water and started drinking it.
I hear the sound of the bell and I run to answer the door, it was Lyan, he lifts the bag with the two tests and I quickly take it.
— Can you explain to me what's going on. — he says, entering my apartment.
The same starts to follow me, I go towards my room and he soon follows me.
— The following is. — I say, turning to face him and staring at him. — maybe I'm pregnant.
I see her confused face turn serious.
— What? — he says in disbelief. — can you be pregnant with him?
— I'm still not sure about that, but if it's true, of course the child will unfortunately be his, I never betrayed him. — I talk.
— Right, I think you'd better do it soon, so we can clear all doubts. — it says. — regardless of the result, I will always be on your side.
— Thank you, I needed those words. — I say, smiling at him.
Gathering the last requisites of courage I have, I take the two boxes and head towards the bathroom.
I leave one of the boxes on the sink and read the instructions on the other, I read the step by step, so I don't make mistakes in the process.
I open the two boxes and with the two tests in hand, I walk to the toilet, sit on it and wait a bit, then I urinate on the two tests and leave them on the sink, dry myself with toilet paper and arrange my clothes.
Came out of the bathroom and I saw Lyan sitting on my bed, wiggling her foot nervously.
— Have you? —she asks, she's getting up and walking towards me.
— Yes, now we will have to wait five minutes until the result comes out. — I say, sitting on the bed.
Lyon sits beside me and holds my hand.
— What will you do if the result is positive? — question.
— I don't know... I'm still trying to digest everything that's happening. — I talk.
— Will you tell him? — ask me.
— Even if he doesn't deserve it, I think it's his right to know... — I say. — you as a lawyer should know this.
— I know... — he says — will you go back to him?
— Never, we will just have a child. — I say and see him sigh in relief. — I know you care about me, you can rest assured.
— Okay, I think it's been five minutes. — he says.
I feel my stomach flutter with nervousness, my hands go cold.
— Look at me. — I ask. — I'm nervous.
He just nodded and goes towards the bathroom, it takes a few seconds and then returns to the room with the two tests in hand.
I can't describe how his emotions are, he looks sad, angry, hurt maybe.
He can be anything but happy.
— Lyan, what's the result? — I ask, standing up.
— Positive. — it says.
Paralyzed and fell sitting on the bed, I'm pregnant...my God, I'm pregnant with Maycon's child.
I need to think about what I'm going to do, I need to plan my life...
I feel arms around me and I snuggle into Lyan's arms. I somehow feel safe in her arms...
— I will always be here, you can always count on me. She says, kissing my hair.
— You are so special to me... the only person I have left, you and your mother. — I talk.
My parents came to the United States with me when I was very young, basically both of their families did not accept their relationship, and they decided to earn a living in another country.
Already on American soil, we lived together for eighteen years, unfortunately my parents died in a car accident.
I suffered a lot, but Lyan was always with me, after a while, I met Maycon and fell in love, I got married quickly too, and I think that was my mistake, I should have known him more.
Now here I am, divorced and pregnant by my ex-husband.
— They would love this news. — says Lyan. — their biggest wish was to be grandparents.
— But now you're not here to enjoy it... — I say while letting some tears fall.
— I'm sure wherever they are, they're happy for you. — He pulled away from me, wiping my tears.
— We need to tell your mother, she will love the news. — I talk. —she always considered me as her daughter despite everythiNg, it will be great news to know that she will have a little grandson, it will help her to create strength and continue with the treatment.
— First you need to organize your head and your heart, rest and think about what you will do. — he says. — Then we'll go to the hospital and talk to her.
— Do you promise to always be by my side? — I ask.
— Promise. — he says, squeezing me in his arms.
I felt my heart racing, I was feeling protected, as if in that hug nothing could reach me.
