Precaution

I hear Miles' truck pull into the gravel driveway and I rush to the door.

The door swings open and she jumps.

"Nyght! I wasn't expecting you to greet me, you're usually somewhere comfy by now." he smiles and drops his coat.

I'm too excited to hear how her meeting with my dad went.

"Well, did you convince him?"

She smiles wide, and gives me an enthusiastic nod.

"I don't know exactly when it is happening. He said he wants to be very secretive and methodical about it all. He's very serious about keeping you safe. But, he did agree to it!"

I feel the excitement burn through my body. I've been feeling so uncharacteristically sad lately, I think this will help.

"I'm so excited. I hope they come before your birthday, though. I want to share that day with just you."

His expression changes to shock.

"Oh god, I forgot about my birthday. It's only five days away now..."

I nod.

"Are you excited? You can legally buy wine soon!"

She lets out a nervous laugh.

"Yeah and I also might find myself in an Alex situation, and I get to feel the pain of my first transformation. So much to look forward to!"

Her voice drips with sticky sarcasm.

I know she's scared, but something in me can't wait for her birthday.

"I'm gonna text my dad and remind him. I don't want you to worry about the safety of five people on your birthday. You worry enough!" I bolt away before she can argue.

I elected to call my dad instead. I haven't heard is voice for a while and I miss him, especially since he can't come to see me with everyone else.

As I wait for him to find his phone and answer me, I think about the week ahead.

Ugh, Notics.

She's been absolutely wild lately. She won't stop howling. Every dream I have I hear her howling in the background. Though, strangely, I hear another wolf howling alongside her.

She's been... responding to romance movies too. I think miss girl is a little lonely. Afterall, most female wolves have been mated and marked by this time.

Honestly, I'm also... responding to the movies. I think it just gets hard being single, especially as a wolf with all of these crazy hormones. We were made to breed and have pups and raise extensive packs. You've seen my mothers and their seven children, that's honestly low for the number of moms we have. Most female wolves will have seven just on their own.

I know the saying is f*cking like rabbits, but I think someone should officially change it to werewolves.

I call one final time and my father finally picks up.

"Nyght! My beloved daughter! How are you, my love?"

His voice warms my soul.

"Hi Dad! It's so good to see and hear from you. I miss you so much."

His smile is so warm.

"I miss you too, Nyght."

I clear my throat and blink away the tears.

"I was calling to..." I blink a little more to fully shoo away the sadness.

"I was calling to ask you, I mean I know you just agreed to it but. Could you make sure the visit happens in the next like. Two days? Miles birthday is coming up at the end of the week. I just don't want her to be responsible for so many people on such a big day, you know?"

He smiles.

"My oldest girl, so compassionate. Yes, I will ensure it is expedited. Though, this is Miles' twenty-first, is it not?"

I nod.

"Are you prepared for all that comes with her twenty-first birthday?"

I barely know what happened on my twenty-first birthday...

"I don't think so. I mean, I don't even know how I got out of my dress and into a new one on my twenty-first."

He laughs heartily.

"Thank your moms for that. They knew you wouldn't want to ruin that dress, and didn't want you having to find your way back home as nude as the day you were born. Smart women, they are. We followed you all night until you finally collapsed from exhaustion. I carried you home after they dressed you in that white gown you woke up in. They were so proud of you, and it was breathtaking to see you run so freely through the forest that night."

His eyes are filled with proud tears, and mine are filled with love. I am so grateful for the family I was born into.

"I am so glad I didn't ruin that dress."

He laughs heartily again.

"So, shall I prepare you for her transformation? Seeing as it isn't safe for you two to come back here that night." I nod.

"I'm sure you remember what I told you when your brother transformed, and you wanted to be there. It is truly a very dangerous thing. You have to keep a safe distance. When wolves come out the only other wolves they recognize are their mates. Keep an eye on her, but don't get too close. You can transform with her if you'd like, but still keep a good distance between you two. She is very very strong, I can only imagine the strength she will possess on this night."

I nod again.

"Wait until she falls asleep, oh, and be sure to instruct her to wear old training clothes. Something she won't mind losing. When she falls asleep, you will need to throw her on your back. This you do need to transform for, she is much bigger than your human form. Maybe bring a change of clothes for her just to make the trip home less... Personal. I think she, too, would appreciate that."

I nod again, taking in all he's told me.

"Thank you, dad. I really appreciate you. I want to be here for her like she has been for me. I can't believe you assigned someone so perfect for the job. You really are brilliant!"

He gives a modest laugh, and smiles warmly at me.

"I love you, my Nyght. My pride in you grows with each passing day. You will do a great job protecting her, I'm sure of it."

Miles and I both woke up early to ensure the house was completely ready for my family and Miya. Miles even went out and bought an air mattress for both Miya and my brother. We decided my moms could stay in my bed, and I'd sleep in Miles' bed like old times.

I've been anxiously awaiting my father's call to tell Miles it's time to go to the airport, I'm so excited to see everyone. It's been almost a month now.

Before this, I hadn't gone more than a week without seeing Miya. And Aries? I hadn't spent a day apart from him since birth. Don't even get me started on my moms.

I feel Miles eyes on me, her smile obvious even from the corners of my eyes.

"What's got you so gleeful, Miley?"

She laughs.

"I'm just excited for you, is all. Is that the first time you've used my full first name?"

"Huh, I guess it is. Miles just fits you better I guess."

She nods.

As we're sitting with that realization, her phone rings.

"Guess who?" she says, beaming in my direction.

"Hi, Alpha Tsuki!"

The excitement is too much to bear. I don't hear a word she says until,

"Alright, goodbye Sir."

"So? Are you leaving now?" I pester.

She nods through a giggle.

"Yes. I am leaving now. Your family is at the airport which is about two hours away, so I will not be back here for four hours. I need you to stay put, okay? This will be the longest time and furthest distance I have been from you since your dad assigned me to protect you."

I nod.

"I will stay here at home. I will probably just smoke weed. Gotta make the time pass faster!"

She laughs.

"And no ordering food. I don't know who will come to the door and if it's someone unsavory I need to be here to kick their ass. Okay?"

I nod again.

"Good. Thank you. And don't burn the house down!" She jests.

Her hand reaches toward the door to grab her keys, she waves goodbye, and I am alone.

These four hours are going to absolutely drag by.
