Marcus's POV
"What do you mean we lost the tender for the local government?" I shout at my partner in the new business A&G. Fred Adams is the elder brother of the Adams family, and he cost us a big contract. At least I do not have to deal with his younger brother Jack and that stupid Summers b***h!
"We lost to NH&R. I do not know how! But, I have always been friends with the local government, and they always gave me the tender," Fred says.
"We lost to the drunkard Nick Harrison? How the hell do we lose to that man?" I ask.
"He lost his company. They say a woman bought him out, and she moved their head office to New York. I have not met her yet, and I do not know who she is," Fred says.
"I will see what I can do! But we have been losing out to NH&R in New York and California lately, and I blame you! I will have to jump in myself and see what I can do about saving this company. If NH&R extent to other major cities, we are in big trouble. I want to see all our financials. Also, I will take over the deals from now on. You only cost me money, and I do not like losing money! I normally do not bother with companies like this, but it has potential, and I will see how I can counter that woman, whoever she is!" I say and put the phone down in his ear. I am still so bloody mad at Jackie, but I let her hang around to keep other women of my back. I am not planning on marrying her. There is one woman I will marry. My green-eyed girl from ten years back, but I gave up finding her, so I guess I will never get married.
I think back to that night. I was out for a night in town with my friends when I spotted her. She was not dressed fancy and was sitting drinking at the bar. She had not much makeup on, but still, she was beautiful without knowing it. I walked over and asked her if I could buy her a drink. She was already tipsy and said sure.
"Why are a beautiful woman like you here alone?" I ask.
"My husband kicked me out of the house like a dog. He has a new woman, and now I am free, I guess, as he already divorced me. I signed the papers last week, but I thought he would give me time to find a place after the divorce when through, but here I am homeless, but I have money to survive and move on, so do not feel sorry for me and buy me drinks. I am not beautiful. I am an ordinary woman with no makeup on and no fancy dresses," She said.
"What is your name?" I asked.
"Call me whatever you want," She said.
"You look like a Linda, so then I will call you Linda," I said. I thought it would be a fling only.
"Hahaha, you don't know how close you are to my real name," She laughed. So we talked and drank. She got really drunk fast, and I could see she was not used to drinking. Later that night, I booked her a room. I was not planning on staying with her, but when we got to the room, she invited me in for a nightcap, and we started drinking. I got drunk, and we ended up in bed. I remember her flirting with me as if she was hungry for love. I told her to call me Mark, and we made love a lot that night. Her body was perfect, and I could not believe a real man would leave a little firefox like her. The thing that stayed with me the most over the past years was her eyes. Her emerald green eyes! When I woke up the following day, she was gone. I look everywhere for her, and ten years later, I still have not found her. I pull myself together and shake the memory of that night out of my head.
"You never believed in love, Marcus Green! Haven't you seen too many people get hurt because of that word! For ten years, you have been chasing a dream! How can you believe in love at first sight if you don't believe in love at all!" I talk to myself. My office door burst open, and Jackie walked in.
"I saw the most beautiful wedding dress today! Marcus, when are we setting a date for our wedding! You do not even take me out!" She says, and she irritates the living s**t out of me!
"I told you a hundred times I do not have time to take you out, and now you got me into a new company that will take up a lot of my time. As for the wedding, forget about it! I am not ready to get married yet," I say as I look at the reports from G&A. This is worst than I thought. I will have to talk to my competitor and see if NH&R will not buy my shares in this company. Maybe the owner will it will save her a lot of money to open in other cities. Then again, I have always been competitive. I want to show this little woman that I can beat her at her own game.
"What do you mean forget about a wedding! Are you going to marry me or not? I am not getting any younger, and I want to have babies," Jackie asks.
"Forget about children. I do not want children," I say. She takes the ring off her finger and throws it at me.
"We are done, Marcus Green! I am tired of you using me and not wanting to marry me!" She says and storms out of the office. She will be back tomorrow begging me for my forgiveness and asking for the ring back, but I am tired of Jackie, and I think it is time to end this relationship. I take the ring and put it in my pocket. I will give it to my sister tomorrow. My family is driving me nuts to leave Jackie, and I think my sister will be happy.
Emily and I grew up in a house where there was no love between our parents. They lived their own lives and hardly worried about Emily and me. However, I always cared for my younger sister, well, by a few seconds as we were twins. Our parents were always out with their lovers. Emily is a sweet woman, and she is married to Lester, my best friend from high school. I am glad they are happy and have two beautiful children. The youngest is nine, and the oldest is twelve. They are two girls and Lester's princesses. I feel sorry for their husbands one day. I can not keep my mind on my job today! I pick up my phone and tell my secretary to please get me on the line with the CEO of NH&R. It takes a while before she calls me back and tells me Miss Harrison is on the line for me. So the drunkard has a daughter? But why will she buy his shares? Or are they not related?
"Miss Harrison?" I ask.
"Yes, Mr. Green. How can I help you? Do you want to sell your shares in A&G to me?" Her voice comes over the phone, and it sounds a bit familiar, but I can not place it.
"Are you interested in buying my share?" I ask to buy time and to feel where I stand with her.
"Not at all, as I know I will have A&G on its knees by the end of this year," She says.
"Don't underestimate me, Miss Harrison. I am not Fred Adams or the Adams family; you are used to being your competitors. I am much more dangerous than those clowns. So don't take me on," I say.
"Listen, Mr. Green, I have nothing against you, and I do not even know you, but do not stand in my way to crush the Adams family. Sell your shares and walk away from this war that has nothing to do with you," She says in a soft voice. I have heard that voice somewhere before!
"So you are after the Adams family. May I ask why?" I ask.
"It is personal," She says short.
"Well, I am not selling my shares, and if you want to get to the Adams family, you will have to get me as well," I say with a smile. I like a challenge, and I have not had one in a long time.
"Well, I warned you. You have no idea what I have planned for A&G," She says.
"Is that a challenge, Miss Harrison?" I ask with a smile. I bet she is an old lady with thick glasses and a bun on her head. I bet she has at least seven cats. But her voice keeps playing in my mind. Where have I dealt with her before?
"Yes, if you want to see it that way, Mr. Green," She says.
"Challenge accepted, Miss Harrison," I say. I hang up without saying goodbye.
I wonder what her beef is with the Adams family. Maybe, Fred. He is known as a player, and perhaps he hurt her somewhere in his life. I pick up my phone and call my head of security. I have to find out everything I can about this Harrison woman.
"Look into Miss Harrison for me. She is the CEO of NH&R," I tell Noah, my head of security, as soon as he answers his phone.
"I will be right on it, sir," He said. He usually will call me back after ten minutes with some news or scandals he can pick up on the internet or tabloid, but Noah has not called me back a half an hour. Then, at last, my phone rings and I see it is Noah.
"What took you so long?" I ask.
"I could not get a thing on Miss Harrison, not in the tabloids or on the internet, sir. No photos, nothing!" He says. I frown. A person usually has something on the internet. Well, unless you are like me. I don't leave a trace of myself on the internet or tabloids. That is why I never went out with Jackie. I like my privacy. Well, it looks like Miss Harrison is the same as me.
"It is okay, Noah. We will think of something," I say.
"I could go to New York and see if I can get something on her there, sir," Noah says.
"Go ahead then, Noah. I will pay for everything," I say. Noah goes with me everywhere and makes sure not to let people know who I am. He protects me.
"Wait. I may join you as I want to go there for a tender myself," I say. I remembered a tender for a new hotel in New York that needs internet and a phone system. I might beat NH&R this time, and I will take my best team with me. I called Fred and asked him to send out his best team with me as we will leave for New York in a couple of days and need to prepare a presentation, but I want to see his team this afternoon! I do not know much about this business yet, but I can learn fast. The tender is only in a month, so it gives me time. I am looking into NH&R's webpage, and I am impressed with its new products. If they were not my competition, I would have let them do my whole office. I click on the "OUR TEAM" button at the top of the page, but I am disappointed as no photos or information on their CEO. Only her degrees are listed, and I am intrigued as I see she got her degrees at the University of Houston. If only I knew which year she got them. I could ask my friend at the university about her. He is an old professor. I may go and ask him anyway as he might remember a Miss Harrison. I do not know why I am so obsessed with her. Maybe it is her voice that sounds so familiar.
