Chapter 5 Vortex is a human nurse!

1550 Words
Landon Landon healed as fast as he could under the moonlight. He got up and heard footsteps. Nicolai's army had found him. He had to run. He shifted into his wolf form and dashed through the forest. He saw a large figure blocking his way. It was Nicolai’s beta who had wounded him with wolfsbane. He snarled and attacked the beta, but he heard more howls and paws behind him. He pulled back and ran into the shadows, leaving the beta bleeding and dying. ••• Landon arrived safely in his pack settlement, but in ruins. Patches of dirt were splattered across his face and his hair was tousled in a mass mess. His clothes were torn and smudged with mud. Explosive anger brewed in him as he stared at his reflection. He took off his shirt to reveal his lean torso that glistened with sweat, his light brown skin gleaming like polished leather. The cut healed completely but left three scars that extended across his lower back. Hoping to calm the storm that raged inside him, he paced from one side of the room to another, his lips pressed together. A knock on the door interrupted him. "Who is that? Come in." The overwhelming scent of a beta sweat filled the room as Declan, his second in command and the strongest beta in his pack walked in. He must have concluded training for the day. Due to the constant wars and raiding of packs, they trained almost every day to prepare themselves for any uncertainty. "I came as soon as I perceived your scent," he said, gently closing the door behind him. "So how did the meeting with Nicolai---" His words paused in his mouth and his amber eyes widened the moment he saw the scars. "Don't be bothered about the scars," Landon said, turning away from him. "They'll fade in a couple of days." "But how did they come about," Declan's brows furrowed. "Were you attacked? Don't tell me Moonblaze pack did this." Air escaped heavily from his flared nose holes. "No," he said. "Edric didn't do this. I was tricked by Nicolai. It was unwise for me to think he will accept my proposal of joining forces with us." "I knew that sly jerk was never to be trusted," Declan cursed with a balled fist. Landon let out a deep sigh as his thick chest puffed up and then down. Talking about trust, he was reminded of that human nurse. He tried to forget about her who had stirred his wolf's mate instinct. He knew it was impossible for a human to be his mate. Maybe he was just attracted to her beauty and curves. He growled, erasing it as quickly as it came. "Thankfully, the wounds were not severe," Declan praised and tried to help him deal with those wounds, and that’s when Landon focused on his priority--to fight back on Nicolai and his pack. Landon spun abruptly and darted to him, his a hand clasped behind his lower back and his fierce gaze pinned on him. "Declan," he called, his stern face suddenly brightening to a mischievous smirk. "Ready the pack, we'll throw Nicolai a surprise attack when the time is right." *** Edric Edric was returning to his pack after he secretly ‘sent’ Elyssa home, and he couldn’t stop thinking about her. She was his mate, and he did feel a powerful pull towards her, a bond that connected their souls. But she was human. How could that be? He wondered what it meant. Was it a mistake? A curse? A blessing? He didn’t know. He was lost of his thoughts, ignoring that a man was walking up to him. "What took you so long Edric?" Barristan – the most experienced and one of the oldest members of the Moonblaze pack asked, his thin flap of lips folded in suppressed annoyance. Barristan was the pack's chief commander, their trainer, and one of the head advisors. He was as loyal as the sun in a summer sky and in terms of experience was as old as Methuselah himself. He was initially the brothers' trainer and their father's right-hand man when they were much younger and their parents were still alive. He went to wars with their father, took lives and conquered packs by his side. After the curse was laid on their parents by the moon goodness as a result of their unquenching thirst for war and misuse of power, he knew the worst was yet to come. It was a generational curse and it affected the brothers. A curse that had thrown them into a dispute that was sharp enough to divide the pack into two separate units that have been in constant wars to conquer the other. He didn't blame the brothers for it, they were only victims of circumstance. A circumstance instigated by their power-hungry parents. Barristan chose to be by Edric's side not because he was his early and personal favourite, but because he was more humane than Landon and would stop the lingering war one day by finding the Vortex Luna, the curse-breaker. "Sorry," Edric apologized and chuckled as his face lit up. "I was with someone and the weirdest thing happened---" his chuckle turned to scoff and the scoff widened to a toothy grin. "What weirdest thing are you talking about?" Barristan asked with his lowered brows. "Don't worry," he said. "It's personal stuff. I might tell you later." "Ok, if you insist," he shrugged. "So what's the big news?" "Walk with me." They strutted down the hallway and walked past the sound of clanging blades and aggressive howls at the training yard. Their pack and many others trained on moonlit nights because they were at their most powerful at that time. "Landon was attacked," Barristan said with hesitation. A surge of electricity sparked inside Edric and his eyeballs widened. Even though he might find it hard to admit, the death of his brother was good news, the end of the war, a weight lifted off his thick chest. "And so--- is he dead?" Barristan scoffed, "the Landon we know won't die that easily." Fuck! He felt the surge fade as quickly as it sparked. He of all people should know his brother was tough and didn't give up easily. "Well, Who was the attacker?" Those words rushed out as one from his mouth. As much as he hates to admit it, after all, Declan is his brother... "From what I gathered, he was in talks of joining forces with another pack - Shadowmoon pack for obvious reason..." Barristan did not continue, Declan joined with the others for the obvious purpose of fighting him, the brother. "And then?" his jaw tightened. But the face still shows no concern. They stopped by Edric's doorway. "The exact details could not be known, but I think the man betrayed Declan and the cooperation was nothing but a trap. After all, that man..." Barristan paused again, as if that was a name that could not be spoken. "Who is it?" His eyes squinted and he leaned on the wall beside the door. "Nicolai Moore," he pronounced. "Nicolai—" Barristan huffed out a deep breath and said "Years back Nicolai's father and his pack were conquered by your father. I was there when his head was separated from his body and little Nicolai happened to be there too, just watching like he didn't understand what was happening." There was a moment of silence between them as they subconsciously pictured the gory scenario. "I remember asking him his name and he said ‘Nicolai Moore' in the most sweetest tone," he broke the silence with an incredulous snort. "He sat beside his parents' lifeless bodies and we couldn't think of anything more to do than to leave him there." "Barristan--- What do you think he wants? To have us die like his father?" He straightened his posture. Edric's calm expression and posture are showing that he is not afraid at all, but for Barristan, war and revenge are endless... "Edric,I don't mean to be naggy, but we really need to stop the war!" Barristan repeated what he had said countless times. "Stop the war? Is it up to me to decide?" Yeah, Edric is just a victim of the curse too, he can't avoid all the attacks, those two won't let him go! He couldn't sacrifice his pack for the sake of so-called peace. "I know, so the first order of business is to find Vortex. break this damn curse!" Barristanhuffed out a heavy breath. *** Shadowmoon pack Deep beneath Nicolai's settlement, in a chamber or rather a cave adorned with crystal orbs, potions, and partly bubbling with unpleasant smoke, the palms of a soothsayer grazed over a red, flickering, crystal orb. "After all these years…I finally found her." Her crackly voice paused and rose higher as she approached the last words. Her mysterious eyes, savage and expressionless suddenly came to life as she stared at Elyssa talking to a patient in the flickering orb. Her shrunken lips widened, making her wrinkles even more prominent and showing her rows of rot-brown teeth. It took a long time before she said the long-awaited words, "Got it! I found it! Vortex is a human nurse!!!"
