Chapter 4 The unique woman

Nicolai cursed and let go of the patient. He turned to face the intruder, ready to kill her. But something stopped him. He smelled something unusual on her. His doubts prevented him from making the next move. Meanwhile, Elyssa’s sleek brows drew in inquisitively. She didn’t seem to notice his transformation. She only saw a man choking another man. “Who are you and what are you doing to my patient? I thought visitors weren’t allowed for now,” she said, trying to sound calm. Nicolai’s senses were able to pick up after she voiced. Hopefully, she hadn’t seen him transform. But he couldn’t be so sure. He had to confirm. If she truly found out his identity, he would get rid of her without hesitation, even though she smelt different from other human. . "Good morning nurse," his lips split to a forced smile as he turned to meet her. "I know visiting isn't allowed at a critical time like this but he's my only brother…my only family, so I had to take the risk." Elyssa dropped the tray that was cluttered with medical supplies, removed her gloves and surgical mask, and walked to him, not looking so convinced. "Can I see your ID?" "Excuse me?" Nicolai acted as though he didn't hear her as a cover-up, relieved she hadn't suspected a thing concerning his transformation. "Your ID," she repeated. "I need proof that he's your family." "I don't have it here." He replied sharply. She made a snort and shifted her gaze to her patient whose head was bowed low, looking like he received a bout that sent him drifting from reality. "Mister, do you know this man?" There was no response. "Hello! Mister, can you hear me?" However, her patient was still silent. She darted forward and pinched his chin to raise it, only to see his almost bloodshot eyes, but something else sent her recoiling in shock – the circumference of his neck was plastered with red traces of fingerprints, as evidence to Nicolai's attempt to end him by strangling. He was obviously chocked out by this suspicious visitor. She couldn't believe her eyes. She squinted and blinked severally to confirm what she saw. Then it dawned on her. Whoever the man standing before her was, he was certainly up to no good with her patient. She opened her mouth to scream for help, but he was faster. He clamped his hand over her mouth and pushed her back against the wall. He slammed the door shut and locked it. “Shut up!” he hissed in her ear. “Don’t you dare make a sound or I’ll kill you.” Elyssa felt his breath on her neck and his body pressed against hers. Nicolai was sure that any female human would feel fearful about his action. However, Elyssa acted completely contrarily. She yelled at him, "How dare you? How dare you walk in here, pretend to be someone you're not, and harass my patient…you even tried to strangle him." "Watch your tongue nurse or I'll---" "Don't tell me that," she splayed her right hand instinctively to shut him. "Leave!" For a moment, Nicolai was stricken like he'd been hit by a canon. A ruler like him. The Alpha king of Shadowmoon pack. He had a proud, commanding demeanour. A ruthless Alpha who liked being worshipped. For as long as he could remember, no living wolf has dared raise his voice at him, not to talk of a human. "Listen to me," he took a few steps forward to her, the look in his fiery eyes enough to melt her. "Don't you dare raise your voice at me. You can't possibly fathom what am I or what am capable of, so watch your---" "I said leave or I'll call security, or the cops if I repeat myself." Elyssa cut him off as she walked to the door and pulled it open. Another hard hit. She was defiant and it was making his blood boil. If only she was in his pack or settlement, he would have had that sharp tongue of hers slit with a hot steel blade. Soon the commotion inside the room disturbed people outside, and passerbys were probing to see what's going on in the room. Now, Nicolai's only choice was to hold back his anger, because he could never reveal his identity. After some seconds motionless, Nicolai decided to leave. "You can never escape me." His last words as made his way out. Elyssa wasn't sure if the strange man's words were meant for her patient or for her. Elyssa scoffed and jammed the door close. Just when she was about turning, she felt a strange sensation. An invisible force hit her from behind and the next thing she knew, her head hurt and everything spun before her. Her knees wobbled and gave up underneath as she crashed to floor, unaware of her surrounding. *** "Nurse?" A distant voice echoed in her head as her eyelids slowly unfurled. "Nurse! Are you okay?" She managed to gather herself up, sighing and clutching her temple, embarrassed. Loosing consciousness in front of a patient was mortifying. "Yes," she voiced. "oh, it's you. I don't know what business you have with that man, but I'll advise you to stay clear of him. He seems dangerous." Seeing that her patient was safe now, she felt kind of relieved. He nodded in response as he put on his shirt. "Uhmm-" she beckoned as he made his way out. "Sorry for that blackout…it was unusual of me," she apologized, almost stuttering. "Sure, thank you." He said coldly and strolled down the hallway. Little did Elyssa know that her patient was going to live a fugitive life, since he dared not to return to his pack. Elyssa drew in a sharp breath as her mind raced back to her loss of consciousness, searching for what could have caused it. Although her colleague comforted her that she may faint due to stress or workload, but she thought the whole thing wasn’t that simple. No matter how hard she tried, she just couldn't erase the images of the guy that saved her and the one she found hurt at the bush. She concluded the worry from that was the cause of her sudden loss of consciousness, unaware there was something more.
