Chapter Three

Beep… Beep… Beep… Beep...Beep… The annoying beeping noise kept going on and on. It was so annoying. What was it? I couldn't see the cause… but then again, I couldn't see anything, except darkness. I tried moving my hand, but I wouldn’t even lift it. It was like I was paralysed. Beep… Beep… Beep… Beep… Beep… The beeping was getting louder, and now I could hear a low rumble. What’s that now? The weight keeping my eyes closed, very slowly started to lift, making it easier to open them. Before I could, Bright lights had already invaded my vision, forcing me to close them again, to protect them. A few more attempts and I could finally start to see. The light was making my eyes water as they adjusted. Scanning the room, I found the source of the beeping; A heart monitoring machine. Why was that there? Looking around more, I realised from the white, Sterile look of everything and the monitors everywhere, I was in a hospital bed. In a hospital room. A Hospital?! Panic started to erupt inside me, and I tried sitting up, But as soon as I did, Pain! I felt pain everywhere! My arms, my legs, my neck my back my… other areas. What the hell happened? ‘Oh thank god, you’re awake?’ I froze when I heard an unknown male voice and my gaze shot to the man, now standing and approaching my bed. I knew if I moved to quickily, I’d hurt, but I didn’t know this man, and I didn’t know why he was here. ‘Who are you?’ I asked loud and suddenly. He stopped and half-raised his hands up, showing he wasn’t going to do anything. ‘My name is Michael and-’ ‘I don’t know you. Why are you here?!’ He smiled kindly and lowered his hands, but didn’t move from his stop, clearly still sensing that I was scared. ‘I’m here because I brought you here, Do you remember anything?’ He brought me to the hospital? Why? I shook my head. ‘Wow, Ok, Um..’ He scratched the back of his head, uncomfortably. ‘I should probably go and get the nurse’. ‘Why am I here?!’ I yelled again before he could leave the room. ‘I don’t want to upset you or distress you’. I just blinked blankly at him, waiting for answers. ‘Ok... Well..’ Turning, He grabbed his chair and moved it to the side of my bed before sitting down, Still keeping his distance from me. ‘Well, what?’ ‘I was out walking my dogs last night and heard what sounded like someone in trouble’. My expression didn’t change, And when it didn’t, He continued, ‘I went looking and found a man attacking... You’. He paused before saying ‘’You’’. ‘Me? What are you talking about?’ ‘There was a man attacking you’. He repeated. ‘Sexually’. I felt my eyes widen in horror and as they did, everything came flooding back; Brent, the bar, the beach… the alleyway… forcing himself on me... Raping me... My hands flew to my face as I just burst into tears, crying. Hiding my eyes, feeling embarrassed that I was crying in front of a complete stranger. He waited, patiently for me to calm down. When I managed to control my emotions, He had his hand held out to me with some tissues. I couldn’t help but think; How sweet of him. ‘You saved me from Brent?’ I asked, Croaking my words out, He nodded. ‘We did. Me.. and my dogs. I just wish we found you sooner and stopped him before he started’. He looked down, clearly disappointed with himself. ‘Thank you’. He looked up, ‘Ever so much. He could have done... God knows what else to me, so thank you’. His lips pushed together and he nodded once, clearly still disappointed. ‘How come you stayed here?’ ‘What do you mean?’ ‘Well... You’re here... Why?’ ‘I wasn’t just going to leave you here alone’. I couldn’t help but give him a sad smile. ‘I should probably go and get someone’. ‘OK’. Giving me a friendly smile, He left, Returning moments later with a Nurse and a police officer. I felt uncomfortable again. While the nurse fussed around, checking things and asking me questions, the officer and Michael were having a quiet conversation in the corner, if it wasn’t obvious they were talking about me, the fact that they both kept glancing up to look at me, made it extremely obvious. ‘Where’s Brent?’ I asked straight away as the policeman sat down and the nurse left the room. ‘We don’t know’. Intense fear flooded me and I began to panic. It must have been clear on my face because both men instantly started trying to calm me down. ‘But.. but you said that you saved me from him, why did you let him go?’ I asked, aiming my question at Michael. ‘He ran off while I was trying to see if you were OK’. ‘He knows where I’m staying with my family, He could come back, What if he tried to get me or-’ ‘Calm down. I promise that won’t happen’. It was strange, I couldn’t help but believe something in Michaels' voice as he spoke those words. ‘I promise’. He repeated. I looked down at my hands, suddenly feeling very shy. ‘I have to ask you some personal questions now, Miss Dover’. I nodded hesitantly. The officer turned to look at Michael. ‘Mr Lupus, I’m going to have to ask you to leave the room for a while’. ‘Of course.’. Looking between the two of us he nodded once and smiled before leaving the room. ‘Right So, Tell me what you remember…’
