Edith cried, the woman then got up. Her body looked so weak, in contrast to her appearance on a normal day which looked so firm and strong.
Cedric rushed to move, trying to stand up and hug his wife’s body but his numb legs couldn’t hold the weight so the man fell down.
Edith was a little touched seeing the sight but soon, she turned her face away. “Don’t struggle in vain.” The woman then moved towards one of the shelves in the room. She glanced at Cedric who was still slumped behind her. The man now looked so pathetic. He even had a hard time just getting up again after falling down.
Edith took a deep breath. “You can’t even stand up but you do bad things,” she mocked sarcastically. The woman snorted. “Stay where you are. It’s sad to see someone struggling stupidly like that.”
Cedric was silent, he weakly leaned on Edith’s desk, trying to sit up. “Edith,” he called.
Edith did not answer the call, the woman took a paper on the shelf and threw it right in front of Cedric’s face. “Go. At least it will be enough to support you for a while.”
Cedric stared at the paper. A check for one million dollars. “I don’t need this Edith.”
“That’s our divorce compensation,” Edith replied with an expressionless face. Her calmness had returned, her current personality was even very different from the figure who was crying a few moments ago. “You can go wherever you want. You can also be with your mistress. It’s all up to you.”
Edith stared at a number of items on the shelf. Trophies, gold medals, to certificates, all her achievements since long ago were stored there. But no one paid attention to her because she was a girl. Unlike her brother who only got 20th place in class and always received praise from all family members.
The Ortega family has a tradition of giving 10 million dollars to their children when they reach adulthood. Edith is basically a genius. She started her career, with a capital of 10 million dollars she managed to develop her company to a value of billions of dollars. Of course it was not something instant. For 5 years Edith fought for recognition from her family, but who would have thought the result would be the same, her efforts ended in the hands of her damn younger brother.
Edith laughed wildly. The woman ruffled her hair roughly. “Cedric, let’s end it all. At least that’s all I can give you.”
“No!” Cedric fell again, he moved closer to Edith using his hands. “No Edith please give me a chance.” The man tried to stand up when he slowly felt a warm feeling on his feet. Periodically, he could feel the soft furry carpet rubbing his feet gently.
“No Cedric. I’m tired.” Edith took a deep breath, she shook her head weakly. Her frustrated attitude returned.
Cedric shook his head too. The man tried to stand up repeatedly, but he always fell on every try. “Please listen to me Edith! I beg you to give me time.”
“I’ve given you three years!” Edith turned around, she looked at Cedric with a sharp, cynical gaze. “I’m tired of all this! Please leave me alone! I want to go far away, alone, without anyone with me!”
“You don’t understand Edith. Please!” Cedric shouted again in desperation. “Please don’t go. Please give me one more day, just one day, please!”
“No Cedric, please.” Edith put her hands together, begging Cedric. “Please let’s separate.”
“No! No! You can’t go Edith.”
Edith took a deep breath. “Everything is very difficult if we are still with Cedric, you know how my family keeps insulting both of us. Everything will be worse if we are still together.”
The woman brushed back her hair roughly. The Ortega family was a group of arrogant people who called themselves family. If one of their members married someone from outside the circle of the wealthy generation, that member might become a public enemy among the family.
Furthermore, Edith was currently on the verge of despair. Her frustration had reached another level. She chose to give up on her company. She could not start again, nor could she seize her company that had been transferred to her younger brother. Edith only thought about divorcing Cedric and running away as far as possible.
Cedric was still struggling to stand up. For the past three years, he had been undergoing secret treatment with a famous doctor. So far he had not felt any significant changes in the treatment, but today Cedric could finally feel the effects of the treatment directly.
His legs slowly lost their numbness but were still very weak after not being used for three full years. The man was still struggling with all his might while groaning and calling out his wife’s name.
After the big commotion, the voice of Mrs. Ortega, Edith’s mother was heard. “Are they arguing again? Oh my poor daughter.”
Cedric frowned. His legs suddenly felt sore, a very severe pain. The man winced, he leaned on Edith’s desk, trying once again to stand up straight.
Immediately, the door to the room opened, Mrs. Ortega’s voice was heard loudly along with it. “Hey cripple! Can you not upset my daughter? You’ve been a burden on our family enough! It’s so annoying.” The moment Mrs. Ortega finished her sentence, the woman was stunned.
In the middle of the study, a man was standing tall. His height was extraordinary and his broad shoulders gave a more dominant impression than the figure. His face was not very clear because of the dim lighting, but the figure already looked so majestic. Suddenly, Mrs. Ortega felt the temperature in the room drop several degrees, the oxygen felt thin, and the hair on the back of her neck stood on end, sounding the alarm of danger from the tall figure.
