"Do you have the right to refuse?" Old Madam Ortega finally took over. The family matriarch now sat calmly on her throne. "What makes you dare to say such a thing?"
The grandmother's words made Edith speechless. The woman stared in disbelief, looking up to see Matriarch Ortega clearly. "Because it is mine," she replied in a very weak tone. A stark contrast to her previous loud shouts. "Why does Evan still have to seize the rights I have in the company? Why are you so insistent? Do you really want to stop my influence?"
"This is for the future of the company." The old lady replied.
Edith shook her head, her red eyes staring at the figure. "Matriarch Ortega, you have taken my position, stopped my influence, and now you want to steal my shares? Do you have a heart? I am a woman, and you are a woman too. But why do you not understand what I feel at all? Is your heart dead?"
Edith shouted angrily, frustration clearly evident in every sentence she said. Immediately, the woman took a few steps back weakly before finally falling down on the cold floor. She sobbed. "Why is it so hard for me? Why do you make me go through all this? Are you still my grandmother? Why are you so cruel? Do you enjoy seeing me become so miserable?"
Matriarch Ortega took a deep breath, she looked at her eldest granddaughter expressionlessly. The old woman currently looked like she had no conscience. "If you still leave your shares in the family-owned company, the running of the company will be affected. And the family's reputation could be tarnished."
"What do you mean?" Edith trembled, she weakly tried to stand up, her steps faltering, she tried to approach her grandmother. "Will I tarnish the family name? Why? What have I done? All I've done so far is try to develop the family business! I keep trying to make this family grow! Why do you say that I will tarnish the family name? Where did I go wrong?"
"Because you are a woman!" Matriarch Ortega finally shouted, the old woman lost her patience. She glared at her granddaughter. "You are being too domineering. Your ownership of the company's shares will only make you arrogant and become more domineering."
"So what if I become domineering? Isn't it fine as long as I can develop the family business to a better level?" Edith still didn't understand this problem. She had pondered for three years and couldn't find any connection between her gender and her position in the company.
"Then you will cover up for Evan! Are you stupid or are you pretending not to understand?" Old Madam Ortega asked sarcastically. The woman's sarcastic face looked so scary. "Stop being arrogant, Edith. Your ownership of the family's shares will only make you arrogant. It also won't eliminate the possibility that you will overthrow Evan's position as the candidate for president director."
"I'm not a fox like you who is eyeing other people's positions!" Edith shouted no less sarcastically. She stared at Evan with mockery. "You are just a pitiful useless child. If you weren't a man, would you have dreamed of your current position?"
Hearing that, Evan glared, he moved to hit his older sister before the family members behind him immediately stopped the man's movement. "Let go of me, you bastard! Let me teach this bastard a lesson!"
"Do it! Hit me now and let me expose to the public that the future head of the Ortega family is just a pathetic brat who likes to hit women!"
"Restrain yourself, Evan." Old Lady Ortega finally said, breaking up their fight. "Edith, I know you are hurt by what happened. But you also have to think about the continuation of the Ortega name. Our family cannot allow you to continue to interfere in the family business."
"Even if you prostrate yourself and beg me, I will not give you what you want," Edith said coldly. A flash of anger still burned in her eyes. "If you want shares, then kill me and take them from me."
"Don't be so impudent!"
"No wonder the matriarch refused to make her the successor. She's a wild woman who doesn't know any manners."
"It's good that she wasn't kicked out of the family."
"You bastard."
Edith looked at each of the family members standing behind Evan. "Have you had enough? If not, come and say it all right in front of my face. I'll teach you how to speak properly."
Immediately everyone fell silent, the people hurriedly looked away, avoiding Edith's intimidating gaze.
Matriarch Ortega cleared her throat. She seemed to be considering something before saying. "Alright, I'll give you one last chance. You can work in the company under Evan's leadership if you are willing to hand over the rest of your shares in the family company."
Edith chuckled sarcastically. Her shares in the Ortega family company were almost 50%, thanks to her efforts for five full years. How could she give up such a dominant ownership just for a pitiful position?
"Yes! I'll give you a good salary and a not bad position! Just hand over the shares to me. Aren't we family?" Evan tried to persuade. The sly grin on her lips never even disappeared.
Edith stared at her younger brother flatly. "Don't dream!"
"Edith!" Matriarch Ortega shouted again loudly. Her emotions rose again constantly. "I've given you such a good opportunity and you act so arrogantly!"
"Am I stupid? Don't treat me like an i***t!" Edith shouted back. Her voice was no less loud than her grandmother's.
"I will only give you two choices, give me your shares or you no longer need to carry the Ortega name behind your first name."
An undeniable declaration. Everyone gasped, not expecting the old madame to take such a far-reaching decision.
Edith was stunned for a moment, but in the end she smiled. A bright smile as if all her burden had been lifted. "I still won't let go of those shares, grandma."
The woman then turned to Evan who seemed to be smiling with satisfaction. Now she knew, her younger brother also wanted her to leave the family.
"Edith will not let go of those shares, she will also get her position as president director back." Cedric, who had been listening in the corner of the room, finally spoke up, causing everyone's attention to shift to him.
