I stood in a cemetery, watching Matthew place flowers on a grave. When I mentioned Sadie, this wasn’t what I meant.
Matthew brushed grass clippings away from her headstone, then stood up. “After Sadie died, I would visit her grave every day. I thought it would keep her close to me.” Matthew looked at the headstone.
“You don’t have to talk about what happened.”
Matthew glanced at me. “You need to know. It’s not as difficult to talk about it now.”
“Whenever you’re ready.”
We turned and walked.
“When I was a junior in high school, I met Sadie. She was quiet but wasn’t like most girls. We got to know each other, and I found her smart and funny. I thought, wow, this girl is incredible. Then we started dating.”
