Finally she picked up the Ancestry book, each chapter started with the name of the Alpha and Luna, a picture of both, then the chapter went on to describe them and their dominate wolfs. Great achievements were mentioned and events at the pack throughout their leadership.
She flicked through the past Alphas profiles absentmindedly until she came across Ryan’s grandfather who looked menacing in his pictures. In one of the sections it talked about a war in the City between the werewolves of the Jade Moon Pack and an ancient clan of vampires who wished to take over part of their territory. The section detailed how the werewolves reached out for help to the whole City but only a few packs closest to the Jade Moon answered their call for assistance. The other packs closed their borders and left the Jade Moon pack to fend for themselves. From the way it was written this had irked the Alpha. A vicious battle took place within the City, humans had helped the vampire clan onto the pack lands. They ran the vamps out of the City, closed the borders to the vampire community and only allowed humans to enter the Jade Moon territory for business purposes only. There was a long list of packs that were banned from the territory and any businesses. Then a shorter list of alliance packs. She noted the Eclipse pack named as one of the allies.
When she realised that Ryan should be the last chapter so she skipped to the back, her heart beating irregular. The last page where Ryan’s profile should have been was torn out, she was disappointed. She read about his parents instead, they looked like a great powerful couple. Ryan was the image of his father, with his mother’s eyes. There were pictures of a younger Ryan with another with red hair and a toddler with blonde hair, Tom. They had done many great things, expanding their business and making the empire stronger. They had opened up a vintage ice cream shop and there was a picture where there were a bunch of pups, including Ryan standing outside with huge grins and ice cream all over their chops. Her mind had once wondered to think about what her own children would look like, if they would love ice cream. Her thoughts washed away when she remembered that she would probably never have the family life, it had made her a little sad so she tried to distract herself with a thriller. Then there was a small section where the future Alpha had been kidnapped when he was 17 years old. Lexi’s heart dropped, she wanted to know more but the section was brief when he was walked back onto the territory and refused to talk for a year. She thought about it for hours. Hours slipped by in her little tropical paradise on the rooftop. She started to feel at home, even more so when Ryan was around. May be one day he would think the same about her. Then she shook her head at the silly thought.
“Little star, we’ll be heading to the pack house by the end of the week”. Tom was sunbathing on the lawn, bare chest with the shortest red shorts she had ever seen. She would bet her last cent that girls dropped her panties as soon he gave them his killer smile. For a flicker of a second she wished it was Ryan in the short shorts. That it would have been a spectacular sight. Then she pushed it away, almost disgusted with herself seeing as last night he was in one of his foul moods and called her ungrateful after she tried to ask him to take her to a museum.
“Ok. Is there anything I need to know?” Tom’s face stilled a shadow of concern overcast his beautiful features, quickly placing his mask of charm back on.
“No little star”. He smiled at her.
“You will be there though won’t you?” She was a little apprehensive and needed one familiar face in the crowd.
“Of course, come on little star, let’s get food on the go ready for Ryan when he gets back”. She smirked and nodded her head.
“I’ll clear these away”. She gestured to the blankets and books. Tom headed to the elevator. She folded the blankets while looking at the vast concrete jungle in front of her. Too captivated by the view her knee caught the edge of the able, knocking over the pile of books.
“aaaarrrffhhhh my blinking knee”. She shuffled about rubbing the bruise already forming. Then something caught her eye. The big leather book, the Jade Moon Ancestry, had fallen onto a page about an Alpha a couple of hundred years ago but something particular caught her eye. One of Ryans predecessors had replaced his betas after they had rejected their fated mate and broke the bond.
“WHAT?! BROKE THE BOND!!!! WHAT THE ACTUAL FUDGE!!!” She shouted so much she scared the birds on the neighbouring rooftop. Her mind went into overdrive. The son of a gun could have broken the bond and they could have parted ways, she could have been free. That selfish sheet stain. Her knuckles turned white where she gripped the book so hard. The anger rolled off her. He had kept her hidden away when this could have been resolved weeks ago, they could have moved on with their lives. She had gone through so many emotions. He had treated her like a possession instead of his one true love, well if he didn’t want her then he should let her go.
She stared out over the City. Fine she will reject him.
The elevator door buzzed. Ryan ran out onto the rooftop like a wild animal. Startling Lexi.
“Lexi what’s wrong, why did I sense something through the bond?” she looked at him and it touched her that he looked so concerned. Then she looked at the book in her hand. Without thinking she lobbed it across the lawn aiming for his head. The book barely missing its target.
“What the hell is that for?” He looked shocked at her sudden display of violence; his little human had never lashed out before. She marched passed him and he was too engrossed in his own thoughts that the elevators door almost shut on his face. They stood there in silence as the elevator descended.
“Lexi?” He was growing impatient.
She stormed out with a thunderous expression that Tom froze to watch the show.
“You don’t want me, right? You have made it clear. The way you look at me sometimes like I’m some mud on you shoe. The way you keep your distance, the way you’re always so disgusted after you’ve touched me. I get it you’re disappointed that you have a human mate. That I’m supposed to be this strong Luna but I’m weak, probably weaker than other human girls my age”. She sobbed in anger and frustration. “I get it. It’s not been a bed of roses for me either. I’m a prisoner”. Lexi had reached her boiling point; she couldn’t decipher her emotions from Ryan’s through the bond anymore. She knew she just had enough of being in the dark. Ryan looked at her confused. He hadn’t realised that this is what she thought. “What I can’t understand is why you are subjecting us to this life? Do you want to taunt me? Am I some play thing you are trying to hold on to? What? What is it about me that makes you men want to trap me, imprison me, torture and control me? You’ve not decided what to do with me yet, Alpha, is that it?” She was furious, yelling through angry sobs. Ryan looked on unsure what to do, for the first time he was speechless. He wanted to answer her but the same sentence stuck in his mind ‘What is it about me that makes you men want to trap me, imprison me, torture me, control me?’ Is that what happened to her?
“Lexi”. His voice was soft but before he couldn’t understand what was going on.
“Why haven’t you rejected me Ryan?” The sound of glass smashing onto tiled floor came from the kitchen as Tom looked over in shock and time stopped. No one made a sound. No one moved. Ryan and Lexi just looked at each other, neither really seeing the other. Lexi groaned in frustration, tears rolling down his face. “Fine”.
“Lexi, no”. Tom’s words were like a cry of a young boy, desperate. The world stopped, Ryan continued to hold his breath.
She pointed her finger at the looming wolf. “I reject you”.
