Lexi leaned back on her pillow while Tom switched on the fire pit. It was a beautiful evening; she knew her friend would have enjoyed sharing this with her. It made her feel a little home sick, she didn’t expect that especially with all the pain she had suffered in that place.
She recalled the Dhampir powers she had read about. According to the literature they had extraordinary gifts, they could manipulate the mind, similar to the vampire but instead of erasing memories, they could implant new ones, but the new memories were difficult to maintain and could fade. She also explained that they were able to pull out a persons’ darkest fear and use it for their benefit, she had read a thrilling story of a male Dhampir who used that exact power to take a throne, by making the king mad. Other books had said that they were shape shifters or had large bat like wings they sounded more like fantasy stories.
In most books they were fast, strong and one book stated that they could transform into any living person they had once touched. The only way to tell the difference would be the eyes, they were unable to get the iris colour exactly right, mainly due to lacking their own. That was all she could remember which was frightening enough. The werewolves had listened intently, they had not heard of such creatures.
“So you’re saying some vampire book outlined all this information, could we get our hands on it?” Tom looked at Lexi with frown lines expressing his concern.
“No not one book and some of the books held myths, so in truth, I don’t know the exact extent of their powers or even if they have any, all I can tell you is what I read”. Both wolves went extremely quiet for a long time.
“Thank you Lexi”. Ryan looked sincere. “At least we can investigate that the DNA may be a hybrid, it’s a step in the right direction”. She smiled to her fated mate. He looked determine, as if he was forming some sort of elaborate plan. She concluded that he must be mind linking others. She wished she had the ability to read her captors mind but alas she was just a human.
Sometime between telling the Dhampir stories and watching the stars twinkle, she had drifted off to sleep. She was slightly rocked awake when Ryan lifted her into her arms to carry her to bed. She never felt more at home than in his arms. They had both enjoyed the contact, the closeness and the softness shared by such a simple act.
Ryan delivered on his promise and gave her backpack with all her belongings minus her mobile, instead she was given a fancy shiny mobile with two contact number, Ryan’s and Toms. Tom had put his name down as Tom the s*x bomb with the bomb emoji by the side, making her smile. She continued to keep him at arm’s length, although she did start to enjoy his company again, each time having to remind herself that he was the guard. She grabbed her pendant from the side pocket. She didn’t know where the pendant had come from but she had it since before she could remember. It didn’t look expensive, more like costume jewellery but she never had a chain, instead she clipped it to her bra. It was a silver circle with a crescent moon suspended in the middle. The moon incrusted with three red gems. She loved it.
The books arrived a week later containing some of the literature that she and Ryan had compared the previously and had yet to read. She had to wait for the pack history books.
Day after day she would do the same, eat dinner with Ryan and Tom followed by nights on the rooftop or watching tv. Lexi found it strange that Ryan would join them daily, didn’t he have a pack to dine with but she did not complain. She found herself looking forward to their evenings, even though Lexi had to adapt to Ryans increasing mood swings.
Some days Ryan would be pleasant company, content, even join in with conversations with enthusiasm. If Lexi was lucky, she would hear his deep belly laughs that seem to fill the apartment with warmth. Those were her favourite evenings.
Other evenings he would look haggard and stressed, lost in thought. Lexi had to refrain herself from trying to comfort him, run her fingers though his thick black hair. She had to remind herself that even though they were mates he had never expressed his inclination to be with her, to treat her as a true mate. She was his prisoner.
Then there were the evenings she would dread. She could sense him before he even exited the elevator. Like there was a sudden change in weather, from hot to cold. His mood dark and dangerous, his aura like black thunder clouds surrounding him. On these days she would sometimes catch him staring at her with such hatred that it took her breath away. Those were the days she learned to remain quiet, to blend into the background.
Lexi was not the only one that noticed the Alphas sudden mood swings, also being on the receiving end of the Alphas vicious remarks. Tom who idolised the Alpha wolf tried to understand the drastic changes. At first he put it down to the stress of the pack being targeted, then the use of the new hybrid drug, that mixed in with the fact that his fated mate arrived would put strain on anyone. He sympathised with his brother but the more time went on Tom felt that he was missing a piece of the puzzle, he had brushed it off and just thought his brother had the weight of the pack on his shoulder along with the complications Lexi brought as well as the issues with Natalie. Natalie had been their biggest concern, something they would have to deal with head on, they would need to tell Lexi sooner rather than later. As such he took the brunt of his brother’s foul mood, trying so hard to shield Lexi.
The routine continued, the days passed without any hiccup, the nights were peaceful. Each night Lexi fell asleep on the couch or by the fire pit, each night Ryan carried her to bed, no matter his mood. That became her favourite part of the day. Ryan would hold her so softly that it had made Lexi fell wanted, appreciated, if only for those small moments each day.
Her nights were now calm, her nightmares vanished. Instead she had dreams of a different life. In her dream life she was standing outside a white panel house in a field and in front of her she could see a young boy with black hair and green moss eyes running down a hill towards a small river, turning to yell for her to hurry, to catch him, with the sweetest smile on his chubby face. She didn’t know who the little boy was but she happily followed him. Shouting out for him to wait her voice happy and wanting to hold the young boy in her arms. Each time she would try to get to him before he would jump into the river, only for her to miss by inches and he would disappear into the water. Then she would wake, confused. She really couldn’t figure out what the dream was about, the underlying meaning.
Other dreams were more X rated and involved Ryan, hovering over her as he once did, kissing her without restrain but he did not stop. Instead he moved down her jaw leaving wet kisses down her neck, reaching between her breasts. His hand would slip under her nightgown, kneed her perked globes and pinch her n*****s until they hardened before taking them in his mouth. She would wake instantly shooting up from bed, panting and needy. She knew those dreams were created by the bond that had flourished into strong feelings she found hard to resist. The next day she would blush in front of Ryan, as if he knew all about the dream as he would eye the human.
She even started to wonder if he could read her mind, she felt so exposed to him.
Tom called her, she had a delivery of old books with a note with ‘Enjoy, R x’ written on it. That had made her smile, that one small x that represented a kiss. They were old leather books, one called the Jade Moon Ancestory, another called ‘The Jade Moon Registers’ and smaller ones that looked like pack rule books. She grabbed the pile and wondered to the rooftop alone, her lift pass only allowing her to their floor and the roof only. “Time to learn about my new home”.
