That afternoon, they walked the seven blocks to the city swimming pool. Dad had said he sat and drove too much, so walking was good exercise. Each had a carry bag with swim trunks and towel. They changed in the dressing room with a dozen other men and boys, checked their bags with a clerk, and ran for the deep end. A lifeguard’s whistle brought them to a half. “No running.” Dad waved at him. “I’m sorry. Won’t happen again.” Brian stared at the buffed and tanned Asian lifeguard in skimpy red trunks, and the man winked at Brian after Dad had jumped into the pool.
