Brian had made coconut and chocolate chip pancakes. Dad took a third helping and spoke as he ate. “Tomorrow I’m going on another long haul. I’ll be gone four days and three nights.”
“Again? You never used to be gone so much.”
“Because you were still in school. You’re a man now and will be in college soon. There’s more money in long runs and I always liked them. I cut back after your mom left.”
Brian went silent. He considered telling his dad he was gay, but then Dad said, “I’m in the mood to go to the city swimming pool this afternoon. Ask Jim to go with us.”
“Can’t. He and his mom left early this morning to drive to San Diego. She wants to see her sister. It’ll give Jim a break from George.”
