“The problem isn’t with you. You have the capacity to have as many pups as possible. It does not lie with you.”
If there was one thing Maxwell always wanted, it was to make sure things turned out his way. Doubts, worry, confusion—he didn’t like any obstruction whatsoever in his way; hence, that morning, he did not hesitate to pay the Physician another visit to certify and check where exactly the problem lay.
The moment he heard the physician say those words, relief washed through his body, and his fear and worry were immediately replaced with assurance. Elizaeth trusted him so much, and the last thing he really wanted to do was let her down. He did not want to lose her trust, as he knew it would be very bad.
She had trusted him all these years and had given him the golden opportunity to have her daughter as his bride when there were better options.
Amelia’s disappearance after the physician’s news the previous night and her not returning had still gotten him so worried, as he believed she would be with her mother and perhaps let her know he could not do what she wanted from him.
His reason for relief could not be far-fetched.
“So... is the problem with Amelia? Is she infertile?” He questioned as he leaned forward; his eyes brightened with expectation and some miracle of some kind.
“I did not say that. Please do not misinterpret my words." The physician responded immediately. He knew how badly misinterpretation had affected a lot of people, including him. Of course, if he had not misinterpreted an incident that happened a couple of years ago, he would still have his mate with him and also have a child almost as old as Maxwell, but not only did he lose his child to the cold hands of death, he also lost his wife to the warm, welcoming hands of another man.
He sniffed as the incident rushed through his mind again, but he was quick to push it aside.
“So... what exactly could be wrong? I mean, what could be the problem?” He probed further, hoping to get a positive result, but everything seemed to be even more confusing and complicated. How could he explain things to Elizabeth?
“To be sincere with you, I really do not understand what exactly the problem is, but I would advise you both to be patient. With time, she will definitely conceive." He advised him. Of course, they had no other option. All they could do was wait until whenever. Maxwell, however, hoped ‘whenever’ would be as soon as possible.
“There isn’t any solution whatsoever." He probed further but was even more disappointed when the physician shook his head. There really seemed to be nothing he could do.
“Just like I said, there isn’t a problem. There isn’t any problem, so there will definitely not be a solution. All you have to do is be patient,” the physician advised.
Left with no choice, he nodded and immediately stood up to leave. He had initially rejected the tea the physician served him when he came, as he wanted to know what exactly the problem was before anything else. Although he had gotten a not-so-negative result, he still did not see or feel the need to have a drink.
Heading home as fast as he could, Maxwell hoped and prayed within himself to find Amelia indoors. No sooner had he, however, gotten inside when she ran in as well, her breathing on the heavy side.
Shock did not do justice to the feelings she had the minute their eyes locked. She was suddenly filled with guilt and displeasure for herself. There he was, faithful to her and wanting her best interest, and she, on the other hand, had wasted the night with a stranger. A man to whom she could not put a name to his face.
“Are you okay? Why are you breathing so hard?” He questioned her almost immediately after she walked in. Seeing her initially made him smile, but her unsteady breathing made him suggest something was wrong.
“Well, i.....” she sighed and tilted her head before keeping it straight again. “I am fine. I just wanted to get home early."
“I am very sorry for what happened last night,” He started as he approached her. Even though she wanted to maintain her distance from him, he wasn’t getting the memo as he continued to get closer to her. Her feelings instantly changed to those of fear, as she feared he could possibly smell the scent of the man she had spent the night with all over her body.
“I am in a mess right now. Please do not come near me. I... need to take a shower.” She raised her hand, creating a wide distance between them.
“I do not care if you are in a mess right now or not. I just want to embrace you and...”
“Stop!”
He was really just being adamant, and even though Amelia understood he wanted to apologize for what had happened, that moment was really not the perfect time for that. Maxwell raised his brows as he wondered why she had reacted that way.
Of course, he knew for a fact that she could possibly still be upset with him for what had happened, but her reaction? It was beyond comprehension.
Not wanting to embarrass herself or Maxwell any further, she made her way quickly to the bathroom to have a quick wash.axwell, on the other hand, stayed in the living room as he still tried so hard to figure out what exactly could be wrong.
The sight of what happened the previous night continued to flood her memories, and she did not hesitate to scrub herself even harder each time she remembered it, ignoring the fact that she was bruising her skin. Her mother would be very disappointed in her when she got the hang of what had happened.
No matter how much she cleansed herself, Amelia still felt like there was dirt on her skin; hence, she stayed in the bathroom for a longer time. Losing his patience, Maxwell decided to check up on her. Of course, it had been hours, yet there was nothing. He did not hear anything from her, nor did he see her.
His worry sense was activated, and even though he knew she would not like his presence in the bathroom, he had to be there. Seeing the mess she had made on her skin, he did not hesitate to get her out quickly and dress her wounds.
Getting the truth from her several times ended in a failed attempt as she was not able to spill a word of what had happened. Seconds rolled into minutes, minutes into hours, and hours into days. Just as the distance between each day and the other increased, so did their relationship begin to get strained. No matter how hard he tried to get close to her, she really wasn’t cooperating with him.
The guilt of being with a stranger never left her heart. Maxwell tried as much as he could to find out what was wrong with her, as she was always curled up in bed. Her fun-filled lifestyle suddenly felt like it was on hold.
A couple of weeks later, her life seemed to be returning to normal as she began to open up again, although it was not so easy—not until she fell sick. Although Amelia had initially refused to be tended to by the royal physician, not having any choice, she decided to take a chance with him. They were both shocked, however, when the physician examined her to know the right medication to give her.
He had a weird smile etched on his face as he smiled at them both, arousing confusion in their hearts.
“I do not want to be the bearer of bad news but good news alone,” He started, his smile wider, getting them even more confused. “And that is why it is with a glad heart that I inform you both that you are expecting."
“Expecting what?” Maxwell questioned himself, as his curiosity was taking the greater part of him.
“A child, obviously,” He chuckled. “She is pregnant,” He announced. Oh no!
Amelia and Maxwell stared at each other. It was like they had never heard the word ‘pregnant’ in their entire lives. Seeing the shock on their faces, the physician arched his brows as he somehow felt they were not comfortable with the news, or were they just overjoyed?
“Excuse me? What... what did you say?” Amelia asked to be sure she heard him right. Since when has she been pregnant?
“I said... you are pregnant." The physician announced again, looking at the patient from eyes to eyes. It just did not make any sense to him. He was way beyond confused. “Is there any problem? Was that not what you have always wanted?”
“For how long now?” She tried to confirm her fears. Maxwell, on the other hand, was mute, as he really didn’t know what to do. Of course, that was not what he had expected to hear. He was beyond shocked as he simply stared at the physician.
“Three months,” The physician responded. This time, his face was void of a smile as he looked at them both from eyes to eyes. Something didn’t fit right. It wasn’t just adding up. Slowly, Maxwell looked at Amelia in disbelief. He hadn’t gotten intimate with her in a few days over three months since she returned from her mother’s home.
Trying to fit every piece into the puzzle, she figured out how she got pregnant. Of course, she had not gotten intimate with any other man but Maxwell. Well, with the exception of the guy, she had had a one-night stand with him by accident.
Although she had gotten what her mother always wanted, she did not know if to be happy or sad. A living thing—a living pup—was growing inside of her! Maxwell, on the other hand, sat still as he tried to process what he had heard. It just did not make any sense.
Not uttering any other word, Amelia stood up immediately and headed to their home. The physician still could not understand what they wanted. A couple of months ago, they were really sad that they hadn’t conceived, and now that they finally did, they were still sad.
“Is everything okay?” He questioned Maxwell, who still remained in his seat.
Yes,” He answered, his fist tightening as he stood up. He believed her ex-lover would be responsible for the pregnancy, and he was determined to bring him to an end that night. Getting a gun was not so difficult for him, as he had friends who had a lot of it, for different reasons he really didn’t care about.
Without speaking a word to Amelia’s ex, he pushed the door to his house open. Thankfully, he was all alone. Before she could say anything, perhaps ask why Maxwell was in his house or why he had come, Maxwell plunged three bullets into his heart and watched life seep out of him before leaving.
