Chapter One
Amelia's brows arched in disapproval and in unison with the quiet, yet not serene, room. She stood still, staring at her mother and then at the stranger right in front of me. He was not particularly a stranger to her mother, but he was nothing but a stranger to her.
Her mother, Elizabeth, the Beta of their pack, stared at her, her eyes shooting daggers as she impatiently waited for Amelia to say the words she wanted Amelia to say to her most loyal servant, Maxwell. Amelia was in a lather, and I struggled to stay composed. Despite looking so calm and sitting gently, Amelia knew for a fact that her mother’s silence wasn’t genuine.
Maxwell stood in front of Amelia and the whole pack, a wide, amazing smile plastered on his lips and complimenting his tuxedo three-piece suit. They were both in the spotlight, and it was quite obvious that they both felt differently about the event. While Maxwell was glad he was getting mated to her, Amelia, on the other hand, was so sad as he was the last person she ever wanted to be with, but she had to hearken to Mother’s wish.
“Everyone is waiting,” Maxwell whispered to her. She rolled her eyes and let out a sigh. Everyone was indeed waiting for her, and she had to say something.
“I accept you as my mate." Her voice cracked as she struggled to speak. She was in a cleft, and she had no choice but to accept Elizabeth’s decision. That was all her mother wanted to hear, and the moment she heard it, a half-smile formed on her face.
Amelia’s whole life has taken a new turn ever since her father’s demise. Losing her father and her brother to the cold hand of death. It had been years, yet it felt like yesterday. She wiped the tears from her eyes as everyone clapped in celebration of the event.
Excited about the whole thing, Elizabeth and her son-in-law waved at them all, joy boldly written on their faces. Everyone watched them as they made their way out of the hall and headed to Maxwell’s home.
“Do not forget. We need an heir,” Mother informed him, trying to keep her voice as low as possible. Her cold tone reflected her frozen heart.
“Yes, ma'am. I am fully aware of that. He bowed with a pleasing smile on his face. Of course, Amelia was the prize, and she was well aware of that. “Thank you very much, my lady, for trusting me with this task and handing over your daughter to me. I promise to treat her well and do whatever it is that you want from me." He answered with so much confidence.
“You are giving me away, mother?” Amelia finally found her voice and questioned me as she crossed my hands and looked up at her mother. Hurt and pain were reflected in her voice. Of course, she was hurt by the fact that her mother was giving me away to her most trusted guard, Maxwell, ignoring the fact that she could have someone else she was interested in.
“Give me an heir... soon,” She commanded, and before Amelia could say any more word, she walked away from them, leaving them to find their way to Maxwell’s home. Amelia remained mute until they finally made their way to his house.
“I know you are upset by the fact that we have to do this, but please, we just have to do this for your mother. It would be a way to make her happy.” He spoke as soon as they got into the house. Amelia shook her head and let out a sigh. It's not like she had a choice anyway.
“A way to make her happy, or a way to make you happy?” Amelia turned to look at him, maintaining her distance from him. If she could run away from him, she would not hesitate to do it that very minute, but where could she run? Of course, she was known to all and sundry. Her mother was the Beta, and she ruled their pack.
Maxwell was quiet as he stared at her, perhaps lost for words. Living with him was a new lifestyle that she had to adapt to.
“I am very sorry, but... we just have to make this happen. I promise, I am a nice person, and I know I am just a servant to your mother, but I am going to treat you well,” He assured her. Assurance was not enough.
“Excuse me”
Yanking his hands off of her, Amelia made her way quickly to the room and laid on the bed, reminiscing on her life and all she had to go through in such a short time. Locating the room was not a difficult task for me, as the house itself wasn’t so big. Each room kind of led to the other.
Although the room wasn’t so good, it wasn’t so bad either. A small bed was in the center of the room, and a small study table was by the side. The bed still looked pretty okay, so she did not think twice before settling into it. She missed her home and her room so much, but his house was now hers.
My thoughts were immediately interrupted by a loud knock on the door.
At first, it felt like it was all in my head, but again, the knock was louder, forcing me back to reality.
“What do you want, Max? You are the last person I really want to see, so stay away from me and maintain your distance from me.” I spoke carefully as I held on to the pillow that was on the bed and crossed my leg.
For a moment, all that followed my voice was silence, and I was glad he had gone, or so I thought. This time, the knock became louder.
“What on earth do you want from me, Max? I want you to...”
In a shock, the door pushed open, and I was immediately met with the angry stares of about five tatted men. Their physique was scary, as was their facial expression, but nothing scared me more than the blood-stained daggers they held on to tightly. Nothing prepared me for the gory sight I saw. I tried to sit up, but I was paralyzed with fear, and no part of my body seemed to respond to me.
At the snapping of one of the men’s fingers, whom I figured out was the boss, another one of them entered, but his entrance was...
I gasped as my eye caught the lifeless head he had in his hands. It was that of Mother.
“Kill her too!” He ordered.
I could barely breathe as I stared at them. My whole world seemed to be crashing right in front of my eyes. Just then, a piercing sound penetrated my ears. Placing my hands on my ears, I tried to stop the sound from getting into my ears.
“Wake up.” I suddenly felt a hand tap me, drawing me back to life. I jumped up, beads of perspiration drowning my skin as well as my dress. Everywhere still seemed to be the same. Maxwell arched his brows as he held on to me and stared at me as though I had lost my mind.
“Where are they?” I questioned, trying to catch my breath, as my breath was far from steady at that moment.
“Where are... who?” He questioned me, staring back at me. Horror and terror were embedded in my face, but then she let out a sigh. It was all a dream after all, but what sort of dream was that?
