PETRA
The party was in full swing when I was let out again a few hours later. Emerald pushed me to the makeup artists who washed, cleaned, and applied ointments that helped to cool the tenderness in my body.
Because Alex's party was such a big deal, Alpha Matt wanted to ensure that everything was perfect. The diviners had also proclaimed that he would be finding his mate, which would allow him to succeed the throne of his father. Alpha Matt and Alex himself had invited all the most eligible females from all packs they could think of.
It was clear that they hoped to join forces with a great pack to solidify their strength. I didn't mind all the politics and bullshit. What I wanted to understand was why Alpha Matt wanted me as a server.
The makeup artist did something to my hair and put me in some respectable waiter's uniform. This was the freshest and cleanest I'd been in months. Yet, while all this was going on, I couldn't help but wonder where my Leslie was or how she was doing. I hadn't seen her since then and my sealed lips wouldn't let me ask her.
When I was done, they pushed me to join the other serving girls. My greatest shock was that amongst them were Zeta's and Delta's_zeta's were pack members who were above omegas. They made up the general population of the pack and were treated with more respect than Omegas, while deltas were rich and powerful but not too dominant_ and were gathered in clusters and talking amongst themselves excitedly.
From their conversations, I realized that they were there in case one of them ended up as Alex's mate. It seemed that Alpha Matt wasn't leaving any stone unturned.
But why was I there?
A sense of premonition held me. Even my wolf was terrified about something. It wanted me to get out of there and run as far away from that place as possible.
"Listen up girls," Beta Dan said as he walked into the room. "The party is about to begin. You all know your duties, keep to them. A lot of important guests are going to be attending today. Try as much as possible to keep to the rules. Don't do anything stupid, the consequences would be dire."
It still didn't explain why I was there. I'd never been more confused in my entire existence.
"Take your positions and file out," he finished.
I was quickly pushed into my position, and while I was still recovering someone shoved me and slipped a paper into my hands. I suddenly felt cold. Subtly I peered at the paper.
'Petra' it read, my eyes shot open. I'd recognize Leslie's handwriting anywhere.
'Be careful. I heard rumors from other omegas when we were cleaning and setting up the hall. You are in danger. This is all a ploy to make you disobey Alpha Matt and get you killed. They heard Emerald conversing with Alex and convincing him to make sure you're on the service team. He's so sure that you will disobey Alpha Matt and he convinces Alex that it would be the final straw that breaks the camel's back and gets you killed. That's why Emerald wanted you to clean. I've been forbidden to let you know that I'm on the serving team too. Don't look for me. I'll be watching out for you.'
I froze.
Hah! I knew that there'd been some catch. But why did my heart beat thunderously? Although Leslie told me not to look for her, my eyes subconsciously tried to pick her out as I destroyed the note. I felt her scent around me, but I couldn't pinpoint her location.
We were pushed out of the room and into the hall where we all headed to our assigned positions. With each second that went by I started feeling more anxious.
I was only able to calm down when the party began and I started attending to guests. Even then, I could feel Alpha Matt's piercing glance with every move I made. I tried my best with even the most annoying guests. We were almost done with the party when a thrilling sensation hit me.
It was like all the nerve endings in my body had been turned on. I froze.
My wolf was in a frenzy and howling out.
Suddenly, a roar came from the stage. The roar called to me and I automatically spun around. The moment I was facing the stage, I was hit by the most delicious scent ever as my gaze collided with that of Alex. His deep brown eyes had become golden and he growled again. The rumble of his voice sent a delicious thrill down my spine.
My wolf purred as our gazes locked on each other. It felt wrong and also like the most natural thing in the world.
Before I could blink, he leaped off the stage and crashed into me.
"Mate," he growled.
"Mate," I growled, taking in his delicious scent.
There was a loud alarm sounding in my subconscious but I was too in the moment to think about it.
His nose trailed my body and his hands gripped my waist tight.
No one was as important as that moment. It was like we were the only ones in the room.
He grabbed my face and kissed me roughly. My body was on fire, I was about to lose control of my excited wolf.
We broke the kiss for air and our foreheads rested on each other. I've never felt more at home. I was dying of joy.
"Mate," Alex growled again, and grinned at me,
His eyes were returning to their normal color when he said,
"I've been searching all over for you,"
My heart exploded and a tear slipped down my eyes.
I never knew I needed him until now. I felt safe and protected, like the happiest woman in the world. I reached out to caress his face.
Suddenly, he pushed me back as recognition registered on his face.
His smile quickly turned to disgust. His face was contorted and I could feel anger pouring out of him.
"You!" He growled.
I shivered, and my heart pounded in my chest.
I immediately missed his warmth and hands.
"Petra," he snarls, "what have you done?"
And reality slapped me in the face.
Alex let out a roar,
"No! This cannot be happening."
Fear racks through me. This cannot be happening. Alex hates me.
"You," he snarled. I could see the anger and sadness in his eyes. There was an internal struggle within those eyes that caused my breath to hitch.
