PETRA "Petra!" A mountain of a man bellowed, striding back and forth around a large field where pack members held training sessions.  Half of the field was surrounded by mighty trees with equally wide canopies which thrust into each other and whistled with the winds. "Petra!" He bellowed again, panting as he paced. His shoulders were hunched forward, straining his shirt and exposing the angry veins that stretched from his back to his neck and muscled arms. From my hiding place in the canopy of whistling trees, I watched him. He looked a lot older than his age because of his body build. He was always bewildering to look at, considering that he was only a few years older than me but was built like a powerhouse. While I was small, scrawny and so unlike my mates. The power he wielded called to me, it made me jealous. Alex ground his teeth and balled his fists. My heart did little somersaults as he marched up and down. I could feel the pull of his angry power. It called onto me, making my wolf restless as it demanded that I obey my superior. I clenched my fist to keep it from trembling and allowed my gaze to stray away and fixate on the array of buildings that lay above the field. The buildings were enchanting to look at. From afar, they looked like perfection and beauty. They deceived newcomers and lured them into thinking that the Silverbane pack was a place where unity and peace thrived. A bitter smile crept onto my lips. The pack didn't look like a place where evil had happened, yet it was my worst nightmare and the place I called home. A place I had run away from again. A place I wished hail and brimstone would rain down upon and destroy. Bitterness burned in my throat, as memories trickled into my mind and mental scars scattered across my body throbbed with pain. My gaze wavered back to the field. And behold, Alex was nowhere to be found. My heart jumped and I moved backwards. My eyes searched the open field, then checked my close surroundings. I didn't dare make a move. I could feel him, my master. Irritation oozed out from his pores. I let out a slow breath, then another. My hands trembled as the fear of the unknown gripped me. Slowly, very slowly, I turned my head to the left and to the right, wishing that I could somehow override his superiority over me and run. But his dominance forced me to come back. "Petra," Alex sang from behind me. My heart jumped and I made to spin around but he grabbed me by my neck. "Petra," he sneered into my ears, "where have you been? Have you been running again?" I swallowed. My body trembled and the scent of my fear saturated the air. "Answer me," he hissed. My mouth flapped open and closed, but no sound came out. Tears welled in my ears and I blinked them away. "I…," "You what? What excuse do you have this time, Petra? You wanted to explore? You got lost? You were being chased by a beast? Or was it a prank? Maybe they have tried to kill you, again." My hatred for him bubbled in my chest. He knew all my excuses, but he didn't know me that well. He had allowed the lies spouted at him by other people and stereotypes of my tainted family to cloud his judgment of me. Alex didn't give me a chance. He never did. "Oh right, now that you've finally run out of excuses to give, can we now agree that you were trying to escape?" "No…," Chuckling, he let me go and pushed me into the open field. "Move, Petra," he growled as I stumbled forward. I didn't want to obey, but the power he commanded moved my feet. I trudged forward, holding my breath.  Together we crossed the field. He continued nudging me until we arrived before the Packhouse. "Please," I gritted out, and it came out angrier than I expected. He chuckled, "You beg all the time, Petra. Yet you try to escape every damn time. Have you ever seen an Omega escape? You've got guts Petra, and that silly gut of yours will be the end of you." I gulped,  The door to the pack house flung open and Beta Daniel stepped out with an eerie grin, and his son Emerald followed suit, "Ahh," he boomed. "I see that you've found her."  His piercing gaze swept over me and I felt my body freezing up. He was even larger than the Alpha's son, who stood behind me. Beta Dan roughly shoved his son out of the way and grabbed my chin. "You disappoint the Alpha, Emerald. He made you the master of the Omegas to test your competence. Yet, each week your Omegas keep trying to run away. Are you not dominant enough? Always letting Alex do your dirty work" he said, twisting my face roughly as he spoke to Emerald, his son. Emerald grunted and scratched his head, he peered subtly at me. His eyes promised retribution. I almost rolled my eyes but I was in the position to have opinions.  Emerald was the reason why I ran again. Since Alpha Matt put him in charge of the omegas—the weakest in the werewolf hierarchy— it had been one problem or the other. Normally, the Silverbane pack had no regard for us and used us as slaves, but Emerald made it worse. He also developed a special hatred for me and made it his point of duty to torture me.  I was always to blame when something went wrong. If something was stolen, all eyes looked on me because I was the daughter of a criminal and prostitute. Emerald made sure to heap all possible blame on me, making the Alpha and Alex see me as some sort of nuisance. A few hours before now, I'd been screaming at Emerald, who'd caught me and tied me up, punched and whipped me with a silver whip. The wounds sealed up quickly but I could still feel the tremors of agony he put me through. Why wouldn't I try to seek freedom? Alex hit me roughly and yanked me by my hair.  "It's this one. It's always this daughter of a slut. But it ends today. I'm taking her to see my father. I'm sure he'll have the perfect punishment for her," he growled.  Beta Dan nodded and stepped out of the way. My body froze as his words sank in and my eyes went round. If he took me to his father, I was done for. My breath hitched as memories of the punishment my mother and I received under Alpha Matt resurfaced. Before I could react, Alex shoved me into the building.  "Please," I begged again, "I promise, I will not try it again." My hair threatened to pull off my head as he dragged me along. The inhumane treatment I was receiving from them annoyed me. I could barely see where we were headed. Because of him, I'd hit my head, arms, legs, and even my body against different surfaces. "Shut up, you trifling b***h," Emerald said from somewhere behind us. Stubborn tears trickled out of my eyes. Emerald was the one to blame for everything. I wouldn't have tried escaping if he hadn't threatened to kill me and torture me in ways I wouldn't have thought of.  "Aww, are those tears? You finally realize how much trouble you're in, right? Or are they fake? Whore." Emerald hissed. Unbridled anger shot through my veins. "I'm no w***e," I screamed.  My mother did what she did but I wasn't her. There was no way I'd allow myself to end up like her. I was already suffering from enough stigmatization because of her since. I didn't even know my father. No one could understand the amount of pain coursing through my heart every time I remembered that I was a bastard child. Sometimes I try to imagine what my father would have looked like and how our family would be if he was with us. Maybe I wouldn't be suffering as much as I was. It's obvious that my auburn hair and deep blue eyes are from him. The only thing I got from Mother was her petite stature and big wolf.  Unlike most omegas around me, my red wolf is quite huge. I also got her pastel, but that's where our likeness ends. Mother may have been the most hated person in Silverbane, but she was drop-dead gorgeous. It was why the female Pack members hated her so much and treated her like she was a leper. It's not like I'm in support of her. She was a bad person, but it didn't stop the men of Silverbane from hankering after her. Before I could recollect myself, I was being hurled into the wall. Pain mixed with anger spread through me as my face hit the smooth surface. "You dare open your mouth?" Alex growled, his dominance pricked my skin like a thousand claws, Another scream escaped my mouth, my chest felt clogged. Cutting off my ability to inhale and exhale. "You dare speak?" Alex hissed again, yanking me up with my hair again. "Your mere existence is a stain. You taint the purity of this great pack with your existence and you dare speak?" My lips trembled and more tears poured out. There was something about Alex's power. It wrecked me emotionally. It made me feel wrong, even when I was innocent. "It's why her mother abandoned her," Emerald sniggered, his words piercing my heart.  Mother ran away because they wanted to kill her. I know I'm delusional, but my mother promised to return. I know she's going to come back. She'll come back for me. "If I was Alpha, I would have ended your terrible existence, Petra." Alex hissed, "I'm tempted to do that now and save Silverbane the trouble, but my father is graceful. I'm this close, Petra. So I would mind myself if I were you." With another tug, he pulled me along. My hands found their way to my throat and I clawed at it as I sought air. My whole body trembled. My vision became blurry and I lost coordination. Air. I needed air. I gasped and sputtered, but nothing was helping. "I'm sorry," I wheezed, trying to save myself from impending death. "Alex…" Emerald said hesitantly, "sh-she, you're suffocating her," "She's better off dead," Alex growled, "Y-yeah, b-but your father w-would…" Emerald trailed off. I'd gone blind now, my fingers had changed to claws and were seconds from piercing my chest and throat in search of sweet air. "Fine," Alex huffed and hurled me away. At once, my chest unclogged and precious air filtered into my lungs. Gasping and wheezing, I curled up into a ball on the floor, sucking in as much precious air as I could. "You take her to father instead. My wolf is so pissed, I don't think I will be able to control it if she doesn't do something stupid again." "B-but, you know I can't face Alpha Matt like this. Besides, we know how stubborn and slippery she can be. She's only staying put because of your power over her." Alex sighed and rubbed the back of his neck. Then he grabbed me again. I screeched and struggled with him. "What's going on?" Alpha Matt boomed as Alex tossed me before him in his throne room. "Oh, it's the slut's daughter again," Alpha Matt said dismissively,  I was sprawled on the floor, my body ached from the beatings I'd just gotten. I gasped as my lungs cleared up and my vision cleared a bit. "Shouldn't you be planning your birthday Alex? Why are you still chasing Omegas all over the place? Isn't that Emerald's duty?" Alex remained mute. I couldn't see but I knew that both of them exchanged a glance and bowed their heads. "Alpha, s-she," Emerald stuttered.  "What's your excuse this time," Alpha Matt barked. "It's been one thing or the other since I put you in that position. Are you not competent enough?"  "I am Alpha. But Petra has somehow begun to resist my dominance,"  Emerald muttered. The room suddenly became silent. I could feel the tension in the air.
