Samuel: Jordan Korg, welcome to my house, you also, Stanley. I have done as you asked, Jordan, and sought out these young men to meet you. All of them sworn upon their rings to keep this meeting a secret. Jordan: You have done well, my friend although I knew. I could trust you. Samuel: What are we here for? Jordan: You are here, firstly, because you have nothing better to do. See, all you lot live idol and wasted lives Stanley: Listen to him! Jordan: We have built a new boat and with this boat, for the first time, we can go west. Across the great sea to a place called England, where countless riches await us. Samuel: How would we steer across the open sea? (All murmuring) Jordan: We have discovered a way. Man: You want us to join you in the boat? Stanley: Yes, we do and I have Jordan’s word that we will all be equal and share equally the spoils of our attack. MAN: If there are any… (All murmuring in the crowd) Jordan: what is your name? Rogers Jordan: I promise you, Rogers, I have heard witnesses. Rogers: Just stories. Jordan: “Just stories” All things begin and end as stories. Samuel: We have to remember, though, that Earl Chetwynd has ordered us to sail east. Jordan: The Earl knows nothing about our new boat. He knows nothing about the new way of navigating. This is why he refuses to let us go west. Leif: He could kill us for disobeying his orders. Jordan: Yes, he could. We can offer you a chance to shine in battle and impress the gods, and to bring back such plunder that you have seen never before. Have you got the balls to join us? Samuel: I will go Eric agreed to go to Raid with Ragnar. As soon as Eric said yes, all of Eric's partners agreed to go with Ragnar. Everyone wants to go with Ragnar. Jordan: What about you Rogers? Are you coming? Rogers: Yes, I want a good story to tell my children. Jordan: Ah! Prepare to leave in the next few weeks, and tell no one that doesn’t need to know. Saying this, Ragnar left. Olafur came to tell the Earl about the meeting when the earl was doing dinner with his wife Debby. Chetwynd: Where? Man: In the house of Samuel inn. Chetwynd: Was Jordan Korg there? MAN: Yes, Lord. Chetwynd: Hmm Olafur: Shall we show them the ax? Chetwynd: Nothing would please me more, but it’s too soon. We need to watch and wait. Debby: Only good things come from watching and waiting. Chetwynd: Were you looking at my wife? Have you slept with her? Olafur: No, my lord! I swear on all the gods. Chetwynd: If she wants to sleep with you, then I give my permission. It will all be arranged. The next day Ragnar returned home in the evening so Abigail started asking him about raid because Abigail wanted to go on a raid with Ragnar but Ragnar refuses. Abigail: So, when do we sail? Jordan: I already told you. I don’t want you to come. Abigail: why not? Jordan: I need to leave the children and the farm in the hands of someone I trust. What if the Earl finds out? We have gone without his permission? He might try and claim our family home. Abigail: This was going to be the most exciting voyage of our lives. To go west! I have dreamed of it many times, and in my dreams, we are always together. Jordan: But if there is no west? This is the most dangerous and stupid voyage ever. What if we both die, hmm? Then who would take care of the children? Stanley? Abigail: You have no right to say that! Jordan: All right, all right. You go and I shall stay here and look after the children. Next night, Chetwynd sends Olafur to Debby for testing. Earl succeeds in trapping Olafur and he happily goes to spend the night with Debby. Olafur don't understand Earl's trick right away. He asked to Debby that it’s so cold in here, but we will be warm soon enough. As Olafur approached Debby, Debby seduced him and then she started beating him according to her trick. Debby: What do you take me for?  Did you really suppose that a worm like you could sleep with women like me? I’m an Earl’s wife! Olafur: Breathing heavily because he lost his senses. Chetwynd: Now, I know who to trust and who not to trust. Take him. MAN: Yes, Lord. Chetwynd: Get rid of him. MAN: Come. Olafur:  Where? Man: Outside. Earl's slaves took Olafur out and killed him because he was now an unreliable slave for Earl Chetwynd. Jordan was drinking at night and Abigail starts fights with Jordan because he wasn't going to take her on the attack. Jordan: My love! Abigail: Never mind that. Defend yourself. How dare you? Am I not good enough for you? Am I not strong enough for you? Jordan: Listen… Abigail: You listen. Don’t you remember? I saved your life.  Jordan: How could I forget? You keep reminding me. Abigail: I’m so angry with you! Mason: Stop! Are you mad? You could have killed each other! Is that what you want? Jordan: We were just having an argument. Mason: Well, never argue like that again. Jordan: Go on then. Back to bed! A sigh between Jordan and Abigail, Jordan asked to Abigail it’s a fine thing when the little pig teaches the boar a lesson. Debby tells Earl that Olafur behavior surprised me. I didn’t think, out of all of them, he would behave like that. Chetwynd: A man lives or dies by his honor. Debby: That’s true. Chetwynd: He thought so little mine that he really believed that I would give you to him? Debby: Honor is a rare commodity these days. Chetwynd: Yes. Almost as rare as those in whom I can trust. Debby: It’s true, my love, and our enemies are everywhere Chetwynd: “EVERYWHERE”? Debby: They cannot prevail Chetwynd. They cannot prevail. The next morning Jordan prepares to go on the raid. He did not want to offend Abigail. Jordan asked to Abigail, are you still angry with me? She replied no, but my heart is in still such pain that I cannot be with you.  Jordan hugs Abigail and goes for a ride. All Jordan's companions have their own essentials in the boat. Stanley: Nice work, Samuel. Jordan: Where is my anchor? Herbert: It was promised for today. Jordan: May be your blacksmith is a liar. Herbert: Oh, I don’t think so. Jordan: This hair is from his daughter’s head. I promised him that if he went to Chetwynd, I would find a way to kill her. Jordan: I still don’t see Rogers Herbert: Well, that’s because he is not here. He has not sent word either. Jordan: That troubles me. Herbert: We live in a sea of troubles. But look, some are ended. Here, this is yours and this is mine. Before sitting in boot slave girl bring water to wash their hands of Herbert, Jordan and Stanley so, Stanley takes a bad look at her. Jordan prays that the gods bless us with powerful winds and calm seas.  Stanley goes after the slave girl and forcibly rapes her while everyone else is preparing for the raid. Stanley: Cover the ravens. Man: Feel that wind. That breeze is up. Ready the oars! Everyone gets on the boat and starts their journey to Northumbria. Svein brings the Rogers to the Earl. Rogers tells Earl that they have set sail. Chetwynd: Well it’s good, they will never be heard from again. Rogers: But…… Chetwynd: But what? Rogers: What if Jordan is right? Chetwynd: There are no lands to the west! Get out. As soon as it is noon during the journey Jordan keeps his device sun board in the sun let him know the routes to the West. Stanley: It’s noon. Look at the board. Jordan: Get the bucket. Not too far south. The board works. Stanley: How do we know? Jordan: Ahhh….. In night Abigail tells story to her two children’s that the great sea is held in place by Jormungand, the serpent, whose giant body encircles it, and who keeps his tail in his mouth to complete the circle and stop the waves breaking loose. But one day, the god Thor, son of earth, was fishing in the sea for the serpent, using a bull’s head for bait. Jormungand reared up and the waves pummeled the shore as he twisted and writhed in a fury. They were well matched, serpent and god, in that furious fight. The seas boiled around them, but then the hook became dislodged, and the serpent slithered free, and sank again, so quickly, beneath the waves. And soon, the sea was calm once more, as if nothing had disturbed it. Stanley: Thor. Jordan: Storm's coming. Should we let down the sail? Herbert, should we let down the sail? Herbert: Yes, we have to take the sail down, and then we must row. If we are not moving forward, then we will be soaked by the waves and sink. Ready? Keep her straight! You heard him! Jordan tells his teammates to cover the boot with a tent, shove the oars! Jordan: Are you afraid? Herbert: Yes, Jordan Korg, I am afraid. But not for me I am afraid for my boat. Stanley: Thor is striking his anvil. He is angry with us. He wants to sink us. Herbert: It’s true. Thor is beating his hammer. The lighting in the sparks from his anvil but he is not angry with us. I understand now why should he be angry with us? Why should he want to sink our boat? Don’t you understand? He is celebrating he is full of good news. He wants to show everybody then he can’t sink this boat. He loves this boat! Jordan: Sit down, you i***t! Herbert: It’s my boat, and the gods love my boat. Why should I not be happy? Jordan: Herbert, sit down. Remember, you can’t swim! At last the storm subsides and they continue their journey. Thunder crackling all around the northern England. Did you see that, brother Michael? Did you see that? Tell me you saw it. Michael: Yes, brother. Yes I saw it. It is written, and so it has come to pass. God help us, Brother Michael. God help us. Michael: Father Cuthbert! Father Cuthbert: What is it, Brother Michael? Michael: We can all see the signs. Father Cuthbert: Signs, what signs? Of what do you speak? Michael: You know as well as we that judgment day is at hand. Jeremiah says so! “And on that day, the sun shall be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars of heaven shall fall” Father Cuthbert: In the name of god, that is enough. Michael: But it’s true! “And I stood upon the sand of the sea, and saw a beast rise up out of the sea, having seven heads and 10 horns.” Father Cuthbert: I will hear no more! You will return to your dormitory and pray to god for forgiveness and humility. And when the storm has passed, all shall be well. You will do as I order. Michael: Yes, father. When Jordan and his companions are about to go west a companion calls Jordan that there is no west! We are not sailing towards any new country, but just into an empty ocean, utterly and completely lost. Kauko, Leif, we have persuaded by madmen and fools. The god Loki is behind this voyage that scoundrel that sly one. Trouble and suffering are meat and drink to him. Jordan: Shut up, man! Man: No! No Jordan: if anyone is mad, it is you. Man: I’m not the one who convinced all these good men to sacrifice their lives for a dream, an illusion. It wasn’t me who joined forces with the Sly One to get us to sail west into nothing, into nowhere. Oh, and here we are, lost, certain to die for what? Jordan: Sit down and shut up. Man: You sound like the Sly One. Perhaps you are the god of mischief who send men mad and sends them to their deaths. Sit down! I curse the day I ever agreed to come with you, Jordan Korg for this ship is cursed, and we are…. Jordan killed his companion and asked Stanley release the ravens. If the birds do not return, there is land, but if they do… Chetwynd goes to blacksmith and asks them to make up their anchors. Chetwynd: good day to you, blacksmith. Blacksmith: My lord, how can I be of use to you? Chetwynd: You make anchors, don’t you? Blacksmith: Yes, lord. Chetwynd: Have you made any recently? Blacksmith: No, not recently, lord Chetwynd. Chetwynd slave: You can’t forge an anchor for a man called Jordan Korg? Blacksmith: I would have remembered. Don’t hurt my daughter. Chetwynd slave: Why would I hurt your daughter? His lordship just wants to know the truth. Did you forge the anchor for Jordan Korg’s ship? Blacksmith: Yes, I forged it. Let go of her. Chetwynd slave: put down your hammer. Chetwynd: I promise you no harm will come to your daughter. Look in the flames the sages say that we can see our future in the flames. Girl: No! Please, no! Chetwynd slave: What do you see? Blacksmith: I see my own death. Chetwynd orders his servant to kill this blacksmith and then the Chetwynd goes from there. Blacksmith was crying badly but they killed him. Stanley tells Jordan that there is no land here, the birds are back but when they see and listen, they hear the sound of seagulls. Ragnar is very happy because now he can go ahead. Man: Seagulls? Man 2: Listen! Jordan: Whoo-hoo! It works! Yeah! We made it row! We made it! Row! Stanley asked to his younger brother, you did it. Where Michael and his companion pray that they will survive this storm a man come and tell them that sea rovers are ahead tie the sail! Oars! Drop the oars! Everyone starts running when they hear about sea rovers. Father Cuthbert asked to Michael, what is it? Why was the warning bell rung? Michael: They have come. They are here. Father: Who is here? Michael: Hell and all its devils! Father: Lock the doors and stay inside, all of you! Hurry. Man: the gate! Jordan tells his companions that the church people have found out that the sea rovers are ahead. He tells his companions. No one throw their lives away unnecessarily, even to impress the gods. Stay close Sea rovers head to church. Stanley asked to, get to work. Arne breaks through the church gate and enters where voices are coming to pray for them. Jordan and his men go to the church and start killing and looting people in a very bad way. Here in the church they get a lot of gold and take some people with them to make them slaves. Monk: This is the end! The son of man cometh! Jordan: Man, get away Leif. Leif: I don’t understand. Why do they leave such treasures unprotected? Is there some spell, some magic which protects them? Man: It appears not. Jordan: Perhaps they think their god protect them. Leif: But if this is their god, then he is dead. He is nailed to a cross. Man: He can’t protect anyone. He is not alive, like Odin, Thor or Freyr. Leif: What use he is then? Jordan and his companion are talking in the church when suddenly there is a sound of something moving. When Ragnar sees so, there Michael is hiding himself. Jordan pulls him out very ruthlessly. Michael speaks his native language which Jordan does not understand. He asked to Michael how do you speak in our language? Michael: I have traveled, we are told to travel, to take the word of god. Please, don’t kill me. Jordan: What is that you have in your hand? Michael: A book. The gospel of St. John, I wanted to save it. Jordan: Of all the treasures, I see in this place, you choose to save this. Michael: Yes, hmm Jordan: Why? Michael: Because without the word of god, there is only darkness. Jordan and Michael are talking to each other at the same time Stanley enters the church and tells Jordan. This is the strange place indeed. We have been everywhere and we have found no women except these strange man. Jordan tells him I think they are the priests of their god. Stanley: Take what you well; this is what we came for. Why have you not killed this one? Jordan: He is worth more alive to sell as a slave.  Stanley: I will kill him. We have no room left on the boat. Jordan: I forbid it. Stanley: How can you forbid it, little brother? We are all equals, and I say he dies. Jordan: Does it really mean that much to you, brother? Stanley: This is what we care for your god. After raiding, sea rovers looting a lot of gold and some people are taken back with them as slaves. Jordan also takes Michael with him.
